This is one for the horror fan among you!
The thing about the best PC horror games is that they're not a genre as such. Instead, rather than a horror game genre, horror is a specific type of fiction that focuses on unsettling, scaring, and/or thrilling the person experiencing it. That is to say, horror comes in a whole heap of unique forms. As far as video games go, specifically, the horror category transcends any given genre.
What this means, in practice, is that the best horror games include horror adventures, survival horror, psychological horror, horror shooters, multiplayer horror games, and - yes - horror strategy games galore. Maybe not so much as far as the latter goes, but we do have some of those, too! A horror gaming aficionado therefore has access to a phenomenal glut of spooky goodness, which is awesome.
Whether you just don't know where to start with horror or you're simply looking for the next delightful spook, you're at the right place. Down below, we've assembled a comprehensive list of the very best horror games at 2Game, and we'll keep adding to it as we go. So, let's get to it in no particular order, but if you'd like something more concrete and ranked, be sure to check this article out as well!
Resident Evil 2 Remake is one of the best video horror game remakes of all time, bar none. It's impressive just how well Capcom has managed to balance the original title's intent with modern gaming sensibility and technologies. The end result is a distressing and tense horror shooter where even the simple zombie is a serious threat, and each round you choose not to fire could be a life-saver sometime down the line.
Compared to the remake of the second RE, Resident Evil 4 Remake is a way more forceful, bombastic, and action-oriented horror game... yet, it succeeds in many of the same categories. One of the best horror games ever made, RE4R is an evolution of the franchise's core concepts in almost precisely the same way it was handled way back in the day. The most important lessons Capcom learned in prior remakes were applied here with gusto, resulting in a game that's a celebration of its genre and far beyond it. Truly, few Horror games come close to this one when it comes to gameplay and scares!
In most ways that matter, Resident Evil 7 is the scariest of the franchise's horror games. This is due to two things: the protagonist is far weaker than any of his predecessors, and the game is played exclusively from a first-person perspective. RE7 reaches an almost immersive-sim level of quality in some respects, with meaningful combat encounters, hectic item management, and a slew of villains that just don't stay down.
The final chapter of the Winters saga, Resident Evil: Village is to RE7 what Resident Evil 4 is to RE2. The game plays phenomenally well across the board, with a huge roster of content that easily keeps players coming back for more over and over again. This is also a great showcase of what's to come in the future, as we gear up for the inevitable Resident Evil 9.
It's entirely possible that Alien: Isolation is the single most authentic piece of gaming media ever produced. The sheer attention to detail in recreating the classic Alien/Aliens aesthetic is masterwork-level, and we're hard-pressed to think of a scarier and tenser survival horror game at this time. The Xenomorph is just that vicious of an opponent. Unkillable too, the absolute bastard.
A more psychological and Weird take on the classic Resident Evil gameplay formula, The Evil Within is penned by masters of modern horror Shinji Mikami and Shigenori Nishikawa. The resulting experience? A master-class of action horror that only rarely gives the player an opportunity to truly rest and respite. Often overlooked in lieu of RE proper, The Evil Within stands shoulder-to-shoulder as one of the best horror games on the market.
Another serious contender for the title of being the best remake of all time when it comes to horror games, Dead Space recreates the concept of the classic original and enhances it in all the ways that matter. The end result is a fully realized 3D Metroidvania-tier horror game that epitomizes the action-horror niche incredibly well. Come on: step into Isaac Clarke's shoes once again and see whether you can make him whole again.
A scary strategy game, of all things? Oh, heck yes. Aliens: Dark Descent is a highly experimental real-time survival tactics game where you lead a customizable squad of marines as they deal with a horrific Xenomorph infestation that only threatens to grow worse yet. A persistent squad and progression, an overworld that changes according to your decisions, and a threat that will not subside? Well, there you go.
One of the most niche offerings on this list of best horror games, In Sound Mind is a quirky exploration of a troubled psyche and one person trying to "fix" it. Puzzle-heavy with some surprisingly solid combat, progression, and story, In Sound Mind delivers an excellently scary experience that will keep you on your toes from the start until the very end, and you're bound to keep this one around for times to come.
The two Little Nightmares titles are horror masterpieces specifically because the developer handles the game's perspective incredibly well. While some may well scoff at the idea of a scary platformer, Little Nightmares is a living, breathing proof that it can be done, and its troubling narrative is one of those that will inevitably come haunting you every so often. A must-have when it comes to the best horror games.
The ultimate horror first-person shooter, FEAR is one of those classic titles that are yet to truly be improved upon by a modern title. Trepang2 arguably comes really close, but that game's narrative does it no real favors, whereas FEAR remains deeply immersive and troubling throughout the experience. We'd go one step further, in fact, and hold FEAR up as one of the pinnacles of the FPS genre at large, and recommend its many sequels and side-quels as well, though none of them reach the incredible heights of the original.
