Read on for the best Mass Effect DLC! After a long wait, the refreshed re-release of the original Mass Effect trilogy ended up being everything we had hoped for, and then some. For example, one of the biggest draws for many players will have been the game's inclusion of virtually all the post-launch DLCs that all three of its titles received as they came out. That's right - Mass Effect Legendary Edition DLC is all included by default!

As some may recall, actually getting Mass Effect DLC packs has historically been a bit of a nightmare. From its outright unavailability on platforms other than Origin to them being available exclusively through confusing in-game UI (depending on the game), it was downright strange how badly the whole shindig got implemented across the board. But, thankfully, this is no longer the case!

Now, Mass Effect has had a huge amount of awesome post-launch content. From straightforward extra missions and operations to entirely new compatriots, armaments, and even crucial narrative developments. Whoever gets Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will receive all the good stuff of the Mass Effect trilogy as part and parcel. But, you might be wondering - which DLCs are actually must-play? Mass Effect games are infamously huge and expansive, and it'd be really easy to overlook things that you really shouldn't overlook.

To that end, today's article is going to acquaint you with the very best Mass Effect Legendary Edition DLC. Trust us - you do not want to miss these. As usual, spoilers will be kept to a minimum.

The Best Mass Effect DLC: Legendary Edition

Since Mass Effect is primarily a narrative-driven game, most of the choices on this list will reflect that. These are, for all intents and purposes, some of the real highlights of the Mass Effect franchise. Missing them would be a real shame, to say the least.

Now, it is worth pointing out that the first game's Pinnacle Station DLC content is not, in fact, available here. Neither are any of Mass Effect 3's multiplayer DLCs, for reasons that ought to be obvious. Aside from the specific examples, though, everything else is readily available. Provided, of course, that your Shepard can access said content in the first place!

Kasumi - Stolen Memory

mass-effect-legendary-edition-dlc-pic1

Available in Mass Effect 2

Having recently been featured on our list of best Mass Effect missions of all time, Kasumi - Stolen Memory is a heist-themed expansion pack where there really isn't much gunfighting at all. This isn't a critique at all, mind. Instead, we'd prefer to frame it as a victory for Bioware. Kasumi Goto is one of the galaxy's greatest thieves and, whaddayaknow, also a pretty stellar assassin-type squaddie. There's a neat sub-gun to collect for your Tech and Biotic-minded comrades, to boot.

To procure Kasumi's services, Shephard will need to help her plan out and execute a heist on an incredibly well-fortified vault. Some of the most memorable sections of this DLC include mingling with the galaxy's underground elites at a James Bond-esque party, as well as Kasumi herself, who will quickly prove to be an invaluable addition to any team.

It's the change of pace that really seals the deal with the Stolen Memory DLC, though. Whereas Shepard will have been shooting up one corner of the galaxy only to move on to the next for most of the game, Kasumi's missions are far more nuanced and contemplative.

Leviathan

Available in Mass Effect 3

One of the infamous narrative expansion packs for Mass Effect 3 - infamous because they came out after most players completed the main mission - the Leviathan DLC is, in fact, an incredibly unique experience in the context of Mass Effect. Shepard will need to investigate the rumors of newly uncovered indoctrination-adjacent technology that sprung up aboard the Citadel. This chase after truth starts off slow and builds an atmosphere you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

While there are scarier missions and DLCs in the Mass Effect universe, Leviathan's many reveals and twists and turns come to a head in an unforgettable underwater sequence. There's really not much in the way of combat here! However, in Mass Effect 3, Shepard will find himself face-to-face with a terrifying truth that will change how the galaxy at large perceives the Reaper threat.

The one and only downside to Leviathan, we believe, is that it wasn't more tightly integrated with the rest of Mass Effect 3's narrative. It's a phenomenal section that could greatly boost Shepard's war readiness against the Reaper invasion. Further, Mass Effect 3 reframes the entire conflict in a way that few of us anticipated it would. It's a hoot!

Overlord

Available in Mass Effect 2

Overlord is one of the (arguably many) highlights of Mass Effect 2. It can easily catch players unaware of the sheer quality of content on offer here. Shepard will, for one, get to use a cool new vehicle and complete several missions on a cool new planet. What starts off as the story of yet another rampant virtual intelligence quickly turns into a veritable horror narrative, with the final reveal bordering on the incomprehensibly horrific.

It's a pretty inconspicuous mission, too. When you reach the required level in Mass Effect 2, Shepard will be asked to help resolve the developing crisis on a remote Cerberus research facility. There, the resident survivor, Dr. Archer, will lead Shepard and his commandos through a variety of tasks in order to disable the rampant intelligence before it uploads itself to the galactic version of the Internet.

Soon enough, weird stuff starts happening. As Shepard begins to put the pieces together, it slowly becomes clear what really went down on the planet Aite. To be sure, the twist is a science-fiction staple at this point. However, that doesn't make it any less amazing and horrific in the end.

Arrival

Available in Mass Effect 2

Those who played Mass Effect 3 before may recall that Shepard is, in fact, imprisoned at the start of the game. While the game doesn't outright touch upon what happened before to warrant a trial, Mass Effect 2's Arrival DLC sets it up perfectly.

For all intents and purposes, Arrival is basically the prologue to Mass Effect 3. It starts off with the report of an impending Reaper onslaught on the galaxy, and Shepard - and Shepard alone - is tasked with investigating the threat. What sets Arrival apart is that the vast majority of its content is played out without a squad to back Shepard up. Instead, our protagonist is left to his or her own devices and needs to survive without relying on anyone else. Whether this is a pro or a con will depend on you!

The story itself is pretty hard-hitting stuff, though. The final decision Shepard makes is basically the textbook definition of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Whichever option you end up going with, the consequences won't be too far ahead.

Citadel

Available in Mass Effect 3

Being the Jesus figure that he or she is, Shepard is always saving the galaxy from this threat or the other. Throughout the trilogy, the protagonist really doesn't get much in the way of downtime. To alleviate that and to give the players a sense of conclusion to all the friendships they made along the way, Bioware created the Citadel DLC for Mass Effect 3.

While the inevitable conclusion to Citadel is the fan-favorite party sequence, we're happy to report that the leadup is no less stellar, either. The whole thing kicks off when a squad of high-profile assassins targets Shepard. What follows is a mad dash to the end through both high-profile shootouts and detective-style inferring, both of which are well-paced and, truthfully, pretty darn fun.

Towards the end, though, is the crown of the show. Arguably, the very pinnacle of Mass Effect 3 as a whole. Shepard will have the opportunity to reconnect with virtually everyone that matters to him. From all the different (surviving) squaddies to some of the NPCs he had met along the way, Shepard can invite virtually anybody to the Mass Effect party. It's an incredible emotional conclusion to Mass Effect 3 and the Mass Effect trilogy on the whole, even though the real catastrophe is looming on the horizon.

Lair of the Shadow Broker

Available in Mass Effect 2

For all intents and purposes, Lair of the Shadow Broker stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best expansion packs of all time. We're talking Oblivion's Shivering Isles, Dark Souls' Artorias of the Abyss, and other heavy-hitters.

Focusing primarily on Liara T'Soni and her current (as of Mass Effect 2) employment with the mysterious Shadow Broker, Lair is without a doubt one of the biggest DLCs the Mass Effect universe has ever received. It makes the very top of our Mass Effect Legendary Edition DLC list is a testament to Bioware's skillful deployment of this content.

There's really not much that can be said about Lair of the Shadow Broker that wouldn't be considered a spoiler. Shepard will, however, have the opportunity to start or continue his relationship with Liara, if applicable. This alone was a major selling point for the expansion pack. The fact that it's positively loaded with awesome encounters, locales, and objectives came in handy, though.
