It's the weekend! For gamers, that means more gaming, and doubly so this month, because May is positively jam-packed with exciting PC releases to sift through. If you're currently on the lookout for games to play this weekend, though, we've got 10 awesome recommendations ready to go.
To be more exact, we decided to feature 5 all-new(ish) titles for your consideration, as well as 5 evergreen must-haves that are currently heavily discounted. Whether you're just looking for a fun weekend romp to take your mind off things, or if you're actually hoping to get invested in an exciting new racing sim, we've got a thing or two to show you.
Now, if you've been checking in with our Community Hub, you'll know that we've been hard at work providing in-depth coverage to all the biggest games on the market. From Biomutant to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, just head on over if you want to get the latest scoop. Aside from the incredible Resident Evil Village, though - which you can wrap up in a single weekend - we decided to put other titles in the limelight with this featurette.
So, without further ado - have fun!
There's a thing or two to be said about nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses, to be sure, but we're all for optional re-releases that have an extra bit of pizazz added on top. Capcom Arcade Stadium Packs 1, 2, and 3 are precisely that. Featuring no less than 32 Capcom classics released between 1984 and 2001, Arcade Stadium offers the unique opportunity to replay old games in an atmospheric VR-like setup. Basically, the whole thing is a kinda-sorta first-person sim-alike, strange as that might sound.
Really, you're playing games within a game here. All in all, it's great fun, and an awesome nostalgia trip if you're up for that. Expect to play Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Section Z, Giga Wing, Dynasty Wars, and heaps more.
Alright, alright, alright - yes. We are kind of cheating with this one. Maneater had already launched about a year ago, but only as an Epic Store exclusive. For some, that was a dealbreaker, and now that the game is out on Steam, too, we can't help but start recommending it left and right yet once more!
Developed by Tripwire Interactive - the good folk working on Killing Floor games - Maneater is a game about a mutant mega-shark tearing its way through a small sandbox filled to the brim with killable and eatable morsels of joy. It's wonderfully compact and incredibly fun, making it an amazing choice for those in need of a reasonably short, yet fun open-world to play through.
Hell, word on the street is that Maneater may well receive post-launch DLC yet, so the game's definitely not a one-and-done sort of deal by any stretch of the imagination. Besides, come on, who doesn't want to take control over a man-eating shark every so often?
Having launched to both fan adoration and critical acclaim, Resident Evil Village is another slam-dunk for Capcom. As if they weren't doing well enough already, with all the awesome Devil May Cry and Monster Hunter games they've been releasing! Jokes aside, we're recommending Village yet once more because it's a perfect fit for a weekend playthrough.
In our case, it took us about 14-ish hours to get to the end, which is just the right amount of playtime to spread across three lengthy, horrific evenings. Right? It also helps that Village is, visually, a cutting-edge title. With support for raytraced shadows and reflections, limited as they may be, you're looking at a game that can run on a very wide variety of rigs, both gaming and otherwise. Courtesy of Capcom's amazing RE Engine.
You don't wanna miss out on this one, trust us.
Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground seems to have gone under the radar for most people, but in our case, we've been thrilled to finally get a great Age of Sigmar title.
A turn-based rogue-lite strategy game, Storm Ground makes full use of its incredibly lore-heavy setting and introduces players to a kind of warfare we've not yet seen in Warhammer. Basically, this is what Dawn of War II would've been had it been a turn-based WH Fantasy title. You'll get a relatively small number of units to outfit and customize during any given run, and then need to take them on a mad romp through veritable hordes of Chaos-infused enemies.
To be sure, there's more content available in Storm Ground than you could play through in a single weekend. That said, we feel it's a great fit for those who need a bit more freedom than most other games on this list would afford.
Yet another glorious Atlus release on PC, this entry in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise is a bit of a standout for a number of reasons. Namely, there's the fact that this is straight-up a post-apocalyptic game, where heroes did not end up saving the world from the ongoing demonic invasion.
Players take control over a recently demonified (?) protagonist as he recruits like-minded demons and fiends to his cause. That cause being - of course - to try and stop the permanent conversion of Tokyo into a hellish Vortex World. It's a fun setting, about what you'd expect from the series, really.
The reason we're featuring a PlayStation 2 game on this list, though, is that it only recently finally came out on PC. It's still a hoot! If you're a fan of the practice, it may also be wise to support these refreshes as they come out.
Having pivoted to a more arcade niche with its latest installment, the Project CARS franchise is still going strong. Namely, if you were hoping to get some racing in this weekend, you can hardly find a better deal than Project CARS 3. Expect an incredible amount of content and a ridiculously enticing gameplay loop that'll keep you coming back for more over and over again. One of our favorite lightweight racing sims yet!
What can be said about Dark Souls that hasn't already been set? This modern classic - in its Remastered form - is a must-have for every serious PC gamer under the sun. If you haven't yet had the chance to play it, this hefty discount may well be the opportunity you've been waiting for. Word of warning, though, as Dark Souls has never been for the faint of heart.
If you were hoping to get a few matches of local multiplayer in this weekend, Tekken 7 is an amazing choice. Ever since it first came out on PC, Tekken 7 has been at the very top of the genre. With continued support and a long-lasting content and balancing plan, you're looking at a great game not only for casual local matches, but also for eSports, if you're that way inclined. Not everyone is, though! We're happy to report that there's plenty to love in Tekken 7, no matter your niche.
Quite possibly the best "classic" JRPG ever made, Wrath of the White Witch is a standout game no matter how you look at it. Incredibly beautiful Miyazaki-esque graphics? Check. An amazing Pokemon-tier creature taming mechanic? Check. A heartfelt story that'll stick with you for times to come? Check, check, and check. Granted, it's quite unlikely you'll get to finish Wrath of the White Witch over a single weekend. Not that you can't try, though!
Finally, we've got one of the greatest FPS games of all time - Doom Eternal. What you're getting here is pretty hard to put into words, really. Expect hours upon hours of fun and a uniquely balanced gameplay loop that will engage you like no other. Classic DOOM weaponry makes a triumphant return, too, as Eternal simultaneously harkens back to its roots and makes headway towards new heights. With a wealth of unlockables, upgrades, and arcade modes to have fun in, Eternal is one of those must-have titles that you do not want to miss out on.
Get Doom Eternal at a discount!
Our hope was to cover as many potential niches as possible with this article. We reckon we've done as good a job as any, considering the sheer variety present on this list! Of course, we've got plenty more content coming over the next couple of days. In fact, just this weekend, we've got our third installment of the 'weird old games' series. It's not for everyone, but boy will you get out-of-the-box ideas for what to play on the cheap.
There's also the early Father's Day overview for gamer dads. You're 100% gonna find an incredible gift there, if that's what you're looking for. Similarly, we've got as number of detailed PC game lists that deal with stuff you may not know about. All in all, a healthy helping of stuff to check out.
We hope you have a great weekend ahead of you: happy gaming!
