Battlefield 2042 Single-Player Campaign Availability

So - this section offers a bit of a 'good news, bad news' situation. The bad news is there's going to be no major single-player campaign / narrative campaign set in Battlefield 2042. Yes, you read that right - the development team at DICE has decided to scrap any plans they may have had for 2042's story campaign mode and focus their efforts solely on the game's multiplayer feature set. This bit of bad news isn't unprecedented for the Battlefield franchise, mind. None of the original Battlefield games (1942, 2142...) actually featured a single-player campaign / narrative campaign. It wasn't until Bad Company and Battlefield 3 that DICE started developing this aspect of the game.

To alleviate these concerns at least somewhat, though, it does seem that Battlefield 2042 will give us an offline solo mode / story campaign mode to play around with. This isn't a bad middle-ground, especially since it's going to give us a great opportunity to test our weapons, gadgets, and vehicles in a contained sandbox environment of the Battlefield universe. It also provides a brand new Hazard Zone mode.

What's particularly cool is that we'll be able to progress through the game by playing against bots in the story campaign mode (it hasn't yet been confirmed whether or not bots can be used in the Hazard Zone). According to sources, the story campaign mode will allow players to progress and get acclimatized with the game at their own pace. They're even going so far as to allow players to join forces with as many of their squadmates as they can, and to play any of the multiplayer modes like a proper cooperative title. Could this set a precedent for future games? Will future games provide a narrative campaign set? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

However, to sum up, while BF2042 doesn't have a story mode, it does have a narrative arch that runs through the three different game modes: All-Out Warfare; Portal; and the new Hazard Zone mode, in which you find yourself in a near-future world that has been ravaged by extreme weather. Good luck surviving!

BF2042 Maps: 7 at Launch, More Coming

According to official statements backed with further sources, we'll get "only" 7 major All-Out Warfare Mode maps in BF2042 at launch. These are, however, supposed to be absolutely massive, featuring huge physics-based destruction set-pieces and a wealth of options to make use of in combat. Maps are the following:

That's an impressively varied selection of locales and levels, to be sure. From high-end, high-tech super-cities all the way to deserts and Antarctica itself, Battlefield may well be more interesting than ever before in its 2042 edition.

The premise of the story - which is bound to be explored via Battle Pass content - is that global warming has basically dismantled the majority of Earth's population, with stateless mercenaries fighting for whichever nation pays the most. To that end, players will mostly be duking it out over experimental life-giving technology and crucial territory in a near-future setting with drones and whatnot. All in all, not a bad idea. An amazing one, actually, if you consider the tornadoes, tsunamis, and sandstorms that will dynamically occur mid-combat.

Battlefield 2042 PC Release Date - Now Up!

battlefield-2042-pc-screenshot3

Battlefield 2042 is set and primed to blow its way onto Steam on November 19th. Depending on where you live, this means that the game is coming out either just before the weekend, or smack-dab in the middle of Saturday. Perfect for those of us who are already eager to take the leap of fate and start gunning for the highest ranks and unlocks on day one!

Is Battlefield 2042 coming to Steam?

Battlefield 2042 PC is, indeed, coming directly to Steam and the Epic Games Store, which means players get to choose whichever platform they might wish to buy it on. Electronic Arts' own Origin service is - of course - going to be an option as well, but it's worth pointing out that Steam and Epic will both launch a lightweight version of Origin to start the game in the first place. At least, that's how all modern EA games work nowadays, so we're guessing BF2042 will, too.

Early Beta Testing for Battlefield 2042

Acc0rding to sources, EA and DICE already have big plans for BF2042 technical playtesting, with the first flight planned for July. We'll have to wait for a more concrete batch of info before we can confirm the specific dates, of course, but it's worth keeping in mind that these are bound to be limited slices of the game, rather than full-on beta periods.

Further, each of the several planned technical playtesting sessions is going to have a different objective. From class showcases all the way to server stress-testing, we presume. There's more info coming over the next couple of weeks, though, so stay tuned until we have it ready to go.

Battlefield 2042 PC Edition Information

As you might imagine, we already know a fair bit about the several different editions of BF2042 that are already available for pre-purchase. There are three of them, including the garden-variety Standard Edition, though Standard doesn't actually come with any extra goodies - unless you pre-order the game.

For better or for worse, Battlefield 2042 will feature Season Pass content, too, and it seems to be tied up with the game's new Specialist feature. There's no cause for alarm, though! From what we've seen so far, Specialists are basically a variation of previous games' Class loadouts, though far more customizable.

PC System Requirements for Battlefield 2042

UPDATE: EA and DICE have released an official statement on Battlefield 2042 PC system requirements! That's right - we now have a pretty good idea of how the game will run on our machines. You can find both the minimum and the recommended specs in the following section, though we've also left in our previous theorycrafting post, in case you're interested in seeing our prediction from a while back.

BF2042 PC Minimum Requirements

BF2042 PC Recommended Requirements

Overall - we're looking at some incredibly low system specs. If these are correct, then Battlefield 2042 may well end up being remarkably well-optimized. Though, having said that, we do recommend waiting for concrete benchmarking if you're on the lower end of this particular spectrum - just in case.

BF2042 June 10th Hardware Prediction

As of right now (June 10th), we're yet to receive the official PC system requirements sheet from EA. That said, Battlefield 2042 will be running on an upgraded version of Frostbite, which is the same game engine DICE has been using to make BF games since... oh, Battlefield 3. We can make a few reasonable assumptions while we wait for official statements, we feel.

To begin with, let's check out what the last BF game - Battlefield V - had as recommended system specs:

Fairly reasonable, though it's worth pointing out that the game did have a special raytracing mode, too, which required a moderately powerful processor as well as the RTX 2070 as the minimum required GPU model.

Now, we do not yet know whether BF2042, too, will feature any type of raytracing. To say nothing of the vendor-specific performance adjustments such as Nvidia's DLSS and AMD's own upcoming FSR. For what it's worth, we expect the minimum spec to be somewhere in the ballpark of BFV's recommended requirements. For more information and a closer look at how the game will actually run in practice, we'll need to wait a bit longer.

Level Editor is Back: Portal Mode

battlefield-2042-portal-mode1

Not only is Battlefield 2042 getting its trademark level editor back, but it's being improved in virtually every conceivable way, too. The upcoming Portal Mode is going to feature all major content from a variety of old games from the Battlefield universe. Going as far back as Bad Company 2, no joke! You can watch the reveal trailer towards the bottom of this page. In the meantime, find comprehensive content lists explaining what to expect out of Portal Mode in the following couple of sections.

Basically, players and modders will have the opportunity to come up with all-new game modes and share them online. From bot-only explosion matches all the way to modern soldiers duking it out with 1942 soldiers. The sky's the limit with this latest addition to the Battlefield franchise!

BF2042 Portal Mode Featured Games

So far, we've seen content from Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Battlefield V, and Battlefield 1. It's a tad strange that Hardline wouldn't be making an appearance, too, but Portal Mode is purpose-made to be a customizable sandbox. We see no reason why DICE couldn't expand upon the available content listing with future updates.

The way this will pan out, is that anyone will be able to mix and match any piece of content from the games mentioned above on the go. Including - of course - the all-new Battlefield 2042 content. Since it's all going to be designed to be easily shareable and playable, as well as having all the normal progression systems shared with the rest of BF2042, this is incredibly promising indeed.
