These are incredibly interesting times for PC gaming, no matter what niche your tastes might lean towards. From the upcoming release of the wannabe iconoclast Steam Deck all the way to cutting-edge tech developments, it feels like there's something awesomely exciting around every corner. Naturally, PC sports games in 2021 follow that same principle, and today, we aim to cover some of them!
We've picked out five major upcoming sports games that are coming out in 2021. Some of them are the latest iterations of classic, genre-defining franchises, while others are changing their business model entirely. The one thing that we can promise you with utmost certainty is that the second half of 2021 is going to be a real pandemonium. In the best way possible, of course.
Though it often ends up underrepresented compared to some other PC sports franchises, Madden NFL 22 is still on the cutting edge of sports titles. Featuring the famous Franchise mode, players will get to enjoy a wide-sweeping upgrade to the Scenario Engine, as well as engage in granular staff management and talent tree improvements. Naturally, an immersive and intuitive progression system ties all the NFL 22's features together so that, no matter what you enjoy the most, your overarching avatar progression will always keep moving forward. What's not to like, for American football fans?
FIFA 22 is the obvious mainstay on every football gamer's yearly wishlist. Featuring more than 17,000 football players, over 700 unique football teams, and more than 90 playable stadiums spread across a grand total of 30 football leagues across the globe, FIFA 22 will - without the sliver of a doubt - be the biggest football PC game of the year. Now, the slight caveat is that the PC version of the game will stick with the slightly older, tried-and-true version of the game engine that foregoes some of the cutting-edge developments that are being pushed into the console versions. This will, in turn, keep the system requirements low so that virtually everyone can enjoy FIFA, no matter their rig!
2K's flagship sports release - the revered basketball sim/arcade - NBA 2K22 is aiming to make its biggest and most earth-shattering launch yet in 2021. While not much is known about this particular iteration of the franchise, we do know that 2K is planning to bolster both the MyTeam and MyCareer features like they never have before. Personalized stories, legendary players, ultimate progression systems - all of that and heaps more awaits in NBA 2K22. We do, mind, still need to wait for further details on how the managerial modes will work, but we've little doubt that 2K's figured all of that out already. Stay tuned!
As you can probably imagine if you keep up with Football Manager's development process, precious little is known about FM2022 at the time of writing this article. One particularly important feature that we do know is coming, though, is women's football, which has been eagerly anticipated for years now. This alone will open up an entirely new playing front for FM22 fans to play around with, and that's before we've even got an idea of what other exciting features are coming with the game's latest iteration. This is the one to look out for, that's for sure.
Finally, the biggest changes are being made to the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise. As you may already know, PES is now being rebranded as eFootball exclusively, and the franchise is moving onto greener pastures as a veritable free-to-play release on both PC and mobile, as well as all modern consoles. Quite the leap forward, if we do say so! This will easily ensure that eFootball makes its way onto virtually any list of most interesting PC sports games of 2021. Remember - there's no other high-profile football game on PC that you could play for free. For free! And it's not like you'd be getting a less performant experience, either. This will be the PES we know and love, except even better. Exciting stuff indeed.
We're getting some serious paradigm shifts in 2021, that's for sure. The fact that PES is going free-to-play and - stranger still - ditching its Pro Evolution Soccer tag alone is incredible. Then there's finally the introduction of women's football to the long-lasting Football Manager franchise.
Now, to be sure, some things we're not overly thrilled with. We firmly believe that Electronic Arts should not be sticking with old engine builds on PC in 2021, for example, but it is what it is. FIFA is, at least, getting a bunch of exciting new upgrades and content, so the game will invariably remain fresh for some time yet.
Overall, though, it's a thrilling time to be a sports gamer on PC. Stay tuned for more continued coverage on all of the titles mentioned above - right here at 2Game!
