Monster Jam! No, it is not a jam made out of monsters, as I thought it might be. For those who are much more informed than me, you know that Monster Jam is probably the coolest sport in the world, right next to robot battles, that stars humongous trucks in a destruction derby.
Monster Jam: Steel Titans brings that experience to video games and puts you behind the wheel.
The game is divided into two equally fun sections: Stunts and Races.
Stunts Mode is very much inspired by Tony Hawk games, giving you an open arena to destroy crates and annihilating scraped cars to build up your combo and performing stunts to rack some points. It is a simple concept that shines when monster trucks are involved.
For such huge vehicles, monster trucks are quite nimble. They can easily lose the ground under their feet, yet they can come back to it just as fast. It creates a strange feeling of dancing on wheels.
Races are a different beast altogether gameplay-wise. While Stunts gives you the freedom to do whatever you want, Race Mode requires precision and handling tight turns to beat the competition.
Be warned, this is not your standard racing game where you can drift your way out of the last place. The controls are super sensitive, which is by no means a bad thing - it actually recreates driving the monster truck perfectly. It will be up to you to get into the game's groove which might seem difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it, winning the race can feel extremely satisfying, not to mention that all the knowledge you gained from it will help you greatly with stunts as well.
There is another mode that is worth mentioning, that lets you freely roam the huge landscape ranging from desert to forest. It is there purely for fun or for exercise, to test your limits. However, that open world has some restrictions at first, so to unlock the whole map you will need to give your best in the Carrere Mode, that melds both stunts and races. You will start slowly within the University that will teach you all the basics and offer you tips and tricks, but soon enough you will grace your presence with the real-life inspired arenas filled with the cheering crowd.
Fittingly, the trucks themselves are the highlight, all of them licensed along with the arenas. Trucks not only handle realistically but the look the part as well, letting you experience both outside and inside view, which can be an immersive experience, especially if you have a gaming wheel by your side.
If you are a fan of real-life Monster Jam, you are in for a treat with the digital experience.
