It shouldn't take long for anyone even remotely interested to verify that 2Game is very much into PC game modding. Though the practice certainly has a dark side, it's an invaluable tool for classic game longevity and engagement. What better way to celebrate the start of the year, then, than with a list of top PC mods of 2022?

Now, while sites such as ModDB may host massive competitions and featurettes, our goal for the days is to give you, our dear modder, a short and sweet overview of must-play PC mods that had recently come out. On top of that, we've also come up with a shortlist of the most exciting PC mods that might come out over the course of 2022. Time will tell, as they say.

No further ado - let's get you upgrading your games, stat!

New Game Mods You Can Play Today!

The first order of business is, of course, mods we can actually get you hooked up with - today. These range from thoroughly expected all the way to some really weird stuff you couldn't possibly have seen coming. Bet you didn't expect to be replaying Gothic II anytime soon, right?

We think you'll be thrilled with what we've got to show off!

The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos

Top PC Mods of 2022: Myrtana 1

We weren't kidding when we said Gothic II was getting highlighted today! This completely free total conversion for - arguably - one of the finest RPGs of all time is nothing short of incredible. Set in the Kingdom of Myrtana, Chronicles offers an entirely new lore-friendly adventure in the universe of Gothic.

What you get is an entirely new open-world sandbox featuring a pro-level voice-over, full adherence to classic Gothic lore, and over 60 hours of playtime in one go. Hundreds of items of loot await, as well as over 200 unique randomized events that may or may not take place during your playthrough.

The Old Realms

Top PC Mods of 2022: Old Realms 1

Mount & Blade games have always played host to some of the finest mods of all time, and Bannerlord is no different. The one we've chosen to feature today, though, is particularly exciting. The Old Realms is a Warhammer Fantasy mod, you see, and that includes all the brutality, gore, and high fantasy violence that comes with the territory.

Set during the period of Karl Franz's arduous ascension to the royal throne, this mod eventually promises to deliver the entire Old World as a playable overworld location. Right now, the mod is pretty playable already, however, and offers dozens of hours of playtime for your copy of Bannerlord at no additional cost.

X-Ray Multiplayer Extension

Top PC Mods of 2022: X-Ray Multiplayer

What would a mod list be without at least one STALKER mod on it? Ever since the legendary Chernobyl-bound FPS went effectively open-source, the community has gone mad with production plans. Cooperative multiplayer has, you see, long been a bit of a carrot on a stick for STALKER players, and though many projects have promised to deliver in this regard, few have actually managed to do so.

X-Ray Multiplayer Extension is, for all intents and purposes, the most promising STALKER multiplayer mod we've had yet. Built on top of the Call of Pripyat framework and with must-haves such as Gunslinger already implemented, it aims to deliver the cooperative STALKER experience we've all been waiting for. As of right now, you can play the wave defense proof-of-concept, with the promise of more to come shortly!

XCOM 2: Long War of the Chosen

Top PC Mods of 2022: Long War of the Chosen

It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. The legendary Long War mod for XCOM 2's must-have expansion pack, War of the Chosen, is now available. Obviously, it's a hardcore mod for hardcore XCOM fans, but boy does it upgrade the game to a ridiculous extent.

What you get here is XCOM 2, but more of it. More soldier classes, longer engagements, more aggressive AI, better progression balancing... you get the gist of it. For many players, Long War of the Chosen will ring a bell or two, but the newly-released version only came out late in December of 2021, and it's the version we've all been waiting for.

Total War: Rise of Mordor

Top PC Mods of 2022: Rise of Mordor

LOTR mods will never stop being popular, we feel. And for good reason, too, as Tolkien created one of the greatest fantasy universes of all time. Since official adaptations are few and far between, the community often ends up producing their own content instead of relying on official sources. Rise of Mordor is just the latest in this long line of fan projects.

What's better, though, is that it's a phenomenal mod all around. This total conversion for Total War: Atilla is quickly progressing towards full release, with a massive campaign planned for sometime in the future. In the meantime, the mod is a bit of a lore-friendly sandbox where anything and everything goes. The sheer amount of attention and love put into it is downright astounding.

Top PC Mods Coming Out in 2022 (Hopefully)!

Now that we've got you set up with stuff you can play right this instant, it's time to kick the hype engines up a notch, too. You see, in the modding community, there's always another exciting project just around the corner. With the start of 2022 slowly creeping away, it's time to look forward to the mods we might end up playing before the year is up.

Fallout Miami

As ever, Bethesda's games come first on the list of incredibly exciting modding prospects. The first of two incredible-looking Fallout 4 mods we've got on this shortlist is none other than the long-awaited Miami. This impressive total conversion basically creates an entirely new world for players to get lost in - that of Miami, Florida.

The project is apparently progressing nicely, and though there's no announced release date in place, the team claims that they do have an idea of when it might be coming out. Before the end of 2022, we're hoping!

Fallout 4: New Vegas

That's right, we've got another F4 mod featured on this list, but it's a doozy. If you ever wanted to replay the legendary Fallout: New Vegas, but felt that the game hadn't aged all that gracefully, this is the mod to be looking forward to.

To be fair, F4: New Vegas is still in its early stages, and it's highly unlikely we'll get to play it anytime soon. Still, the opportunity to get a retrofitted and properly modernized New Vegas in the vastly superior F4 Creation Engine build is enough to send us in a frenzy.

True STALKER

True STALKER is a mod that's been in active production for quite some time now, with devs recently implementing the highly-advanced Gunslinger mod and extra features. In effect, it is an all-new story set after the original STALKER trilogy had already taken place.

Developers have promised both reimagined and entirely new locales and biomes, vast improvements to gameplay, upgraded visuals, new voice-over, and plenty more. In effect, True STALKER will be an entirely new, entirely free STALKER game. What's not to like?

Deluge

Odd as that might sound, Deluge is a mod for DOOM II! We'd call the visuals upgraded, but that doesn't quite grasp the level of improvement we're seeing with Deluge. This post-apocalyptic, universe-hopping horror FPS mod aims to retrofit Quake II's ancient code for new badassery.

What we're getting here is nothing short of incredible. The only problem, really, is that there's no real ETA on when Deluge might be coming out. Do stay tuned, though!

The Elder Scrolls: Skywind

Finally, a Skyrim mod. And not just any Skyrim mod, either: Skywind is a rebuild of TES III's Morrowind setting in the up-to-date Skyrim engine, and boy is it looking fine. "It'll be done when it's done," to quote the developers.

Having said that, Skywind will be a joy to behold once it's finally out. Moreover, it's not like we're getting The Elder Scrolls VI anytime soon. May as well stick with high-end community projects in the meantime.
