Believe it or not, as of today, you, too, can play P4 Arena Ultimax on PC - just like that! SEGA, Atlus, and Arc System Works have teamed up for yet another high-profile Persona release on PC, and it is a hoot. Not only is this one of the best fighting games of the year - a re-release that it might be - but it's also an all-new Persona game on PC.
Depending on how well-acquainted you are with the franchise, this may or may not mean all that much to you. The series is usually known for its amazing JRPG progression, narratives, and combat, but the IP-holders have been sticking mostly to side-games and sidequels for the franchise's (humble) PC beginnings. This series has, traditionally, been a PlayStation exclusive, making its PC launches a bit of a sensitive matter.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is one of these sidequels. Gameplay-wise, it plays nothing like the mainline Persona franchise. The narrative, characters, and characters' interrelationships, however, are on point. So, if you're a bit on the fence about splurging on this title, we've come up with 5 top reasons to get it!
Get Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and play it on PC right now!
As one might expect, P4 Arena Ultimax is not made by Atlus themselves, the studio responsible for most other Persona projects, and the current IP holders. Instead, it was made and ported over to PC by Arc System Works, who fighting game fans will know are the absolute cutting-edge in this niche.
These are the people responsible for cult fighting game classics such as GUILTY GEAR - STRIVE -, Dragon Ball FighterZ, BlazBlue Centralfiction, and a number of other titles. With such a considerable pedigree backing the studio, it's a given that their Persona game, too, would be the pinnacle of the genre.
Building on top of our previous section, we wouldn't want to undersell the actual meat of the game here. The fighting is downright impeccable. Fast, snappy, and responsive, every hit feels like it counts in P4 Arena Ultimax, and every special ability is just a wonder to look at.
What's more is that, even though it is a game designed for veterans, P4 Arena Ultimax also comes with a special newbie-friendly auto-combo system. Basically, players will slowly be eased into the advanced combat mechanics as they go. To begin with, it's going to be a simple, almost automatic process. Later on, as timings begin to make sense and combos become second-nature, the game truly opens up. Most importantly - P4AU plays like a dream all along.
Even though it might not be obvious at first, P4 Arena - and Ultimax in particular - has got a lot of narrative backing it up. In fact, we'd even go so far as to suggest that it might be the most comprehensive single-player fighting game of all time. Not that it's game-changing or genre-defining stuff, mind. This is just a Persona side-story. Something to expand the universe a bit further still.
If you're not keen on competitive PvP, however, this is a must-have! Featuring both the original P4A story and the expanded P4AU narrative, you're looking at dozens of hours of playtime, easily. It's all good fun, and the stakes aren't quite as high as they usually are in mainline Persona titles. Still, though, great stuff.
To play P4 Arena Ultimax, you'll need to choose a character, to begin with. The roster isn't the biggest we've ever seen, but boy is it comprehensive. There are 21 distinct characters to choose from, some of which come in 'Shadow' varieties as well. Naturally, each and every one of them is entirely unique. Pretty badass, too, depending on your preferences.
Since Arena Ultimax doesn't touch upon the regular Persona happenings that much, not all characters from the mainline titles are available. Regardless, both fighting game fans and regular players will have much to enjoy in that regard. Especially with the Golden Arena dungeon mode, where anything goes.
Finally, for Persona super-fans, there's no reason not to play Arena Ultimax now that it's out on PC. Doubly so if you're one of the lucky few who already have a Steam Deck at hand! The game plays phenomenally well and runs on just about anything. Potentially crucial, too, is the fact that if you want mainline Persona releases on PC, you probably want to buy all the other Atlus stuff in the first place.
So, while we don't know that more Persona is coming to PC... it sure does feel like a safe bet. If, that is, the series continues doing well on the platform.
It almost feels strange to write this, but there are a bunch of Persona games available on PC by now. Though Atlus doesn't seem all that keen on porting over mainline releases just yet, the games' performance on Steam and PC at large is bound to convince them to do so - sooner or later. Well, actually, later seems pretty plausible by now.
Still, the list is growing! Here are all the Persona games available on PC today, aside from Arena Ultimax:
It's hardly an exhaustive list, to be sure, but it's good to see the franchise natively playable on PC, of all places. Persona - or Shin Megami Tensei: Persona - is bound to keep growing for the foreseeable future. Similarly, we're positive that there are more PC releases dropping in the future.
So, why not kick things off today, if you're already on the fence about it?
