Should you play Godfall Ultimate Edition on Steam now that it's finally coming out? That's the question of the ages for fans of third-person action adventures, we think! Set in a bright fantasy world, Godfall is a flashy and snappy hack 'n' slash adventure that melds elements of looter-shooter titles such as Destiny and Borderlands with classic Soulslike gameplay. Good stuff, right?
If you were looking for a single-sentence description of the game, that's about right. Though it punches well above its weight, Godfall is in fact a firmly AA title that ought to be compared as such. For example, despite being developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox, it didn't get the sort of financial steamrolling that, say, the likes of Elden Ring during pre-production.
Keeping that in mind, Godfall Ultimate Edition might not be your next sprawling open-world RPG experience. It is, however, a delightful loot-powered action adventure with legendary armor sets, that offers plenty to those who enjoy its gameplay loop. With this article, we'll present Godfall's main draws and help you decide if it's the right game for you.

The important thing to keep in mind about Godfall Ultimate Edition is that it has no pretense of realism. This is the highest of high-fantasy universes, except one that's right in the middle of an apocalyptic ravaging. It's a game that's delightfully uninterested in not looking cool, and one where players feel like total badasses as they uncover legendary weapons, or use their unique abilities to seize ultimate power. Actually, they look cool no matter what they're doing!
What makes Godfall on Steam especially important, though, is that it's the 'Ultimate Edition' of the game. In other words, it's got all of Godfall's expansion packs and DLCs - including pre-order cosmetics - and these are particularly important for endgame progression.
A first-of-its-kind adventure game, as Godfall: Ultimate Edition is priced at just €39.99 without discounts applied, this is a stellar value proposition for gamers who are looking for something different, and boy is Godfall different.
Everything about Godfall Ultimate Edition is built from the ground up in service of its combat. There's really not much in the way of exploration present here. Players move from one combat arena to the other, and as picturesque as the traversal is - and let's be honest, Godfall is quite a beautiful game - with legendary armor sets. There's not much else to it!
This, however, is a feature and not a bug. Don't expect a proper RPG out of Godfall. For the lack of a better comparison, this is what happens when you build a game around Devil May Cry's Bloody Palace mode. Expect combat, more combat, and then some combat on top of all the other combat - that's what Godfall is all about.
By default, this makes Godfall absolutely perfect for short, relaxing bursts of gameplay. Look, we love Elden Ring, but a session of that game will easily take hours of your time whenever you start it up. Godfall, on the other hand can be played in bite-sized bursts, and that's amazing.
Counterplay Games Godfall Ultimate Edition is what Warframe would be if it was an offline game. It's what Destiny could've been had it stayed a fantasy title. It's an easy thing to compare with a vast number of other games, but the simple truth is that there's nothing else quite like it on the market. Naturally, it's far from perfect, and it was widely criticized for... well, not having much else to do other than fight, loot, and unlock cosmetics. As we previously argued, however, combat is the name of the game, and Godfall pulls that off.
With both solo and co-operative multiplayer available, this is one of those games you can just pop into, smash/slash some baddies into smithereens, and have a good time doing it. For the more casual players, combat will be more than fun enough to keep them coming back for more. For the hardcore gamers, there's a veritable wealth of impeccably-designed armor, weapons, and cosmetics to unlock.
Really, though, what makes Godfall stand out is that it's not a live service game. Sure, there's really no more content coming in the future, but it's also a well-rounded experience; one that won't leave you hanging in any way, shape, or form.
The developers of Godfall, Counterplay Games, were pretty up-front about their inspiration. Brandon Sanderson has been practically renowned for making books that are effectively perfect for video game adaptations, and Godfall is directly inspired by his 'The Stormlight Archive' series.
Visually speaking, Godfall combines strangely high-tech medieval armor and armaments with classic fantasy tropes, and the truly surprising part is that it works. The lore is there, too. What we mean by that is that the game has background narrative elements that generally make sense. It's just that they're entirely subservient to brutal, delightful combat.
While there's no telling if there's an actual Stormlight Archive game coming, ever, Godfall could very well be one. If you squint hard enough, of course. While it's quite disappointing that the developers never really got to explore Godfall's universe in more depth, the focus remained elsewhere during development. Arguably, this was for the best, because it is rather fun.
So, who is Godfall Ultimate Edition for, then? Who can make the most out of this strange game?
Well, it's not for RPG buffs, that's for sure. The story is there just to connect one beautiful combat arena to the other, and to ground Godfall's aesthetics into something that makes sense. Don't go into this game expecting a full-on RPG, or a proper live-service looter-s... lasher?
Instead, Counterplay Games Godfall is a celebration of brutal, yet astonishingly flashy and beautiful combat set in a bright fantasy world. The aesthetics are amazing to look at, and just complex enough not to seem overdesigned at a glance. The animations are fast, punchy, and satisfying, and the finishing moves deliver the sort of visceral violence you'd expect out of a DOOM game.
We've made plenty of comparisons throughout this article - precisely because Godfall is unlike most anything else on the market. The thing to reference for gamers on the fence, though, would definitely be DMC's Bloody Palace. If you want a game that just pushes you from one round of slaughter to the next, and throws awesome-looking gear at you willy-nilly, this is the ticket.
