It's Easter o'clock! While just about every family has some traditions of their own when it comes to celebrating Easter, it's hard not to become fully enthralled with the idea of chasing after easter eggs of different kinds. This tradition extends to video games in a way, too, and today we'd like to go over some fascinating little-known easter eggs in games that you probably didn't know about.
Specifically, we're not interested in old classics today. The Romero boss from DOOM II, for example. Instead, we'd like to talk about some delightful easter eggs that most gamers may have overlooked for this or that reason. At the risk of sounding clickbaity, some of them surprised us, to begin with!
Naturally, these aren't really related to Easter as such. They are perfectly appropriate if you've got a few hours to spend on gaming this weekend, however. With a lovely turkey ham sandwich - or some variant thereof - to keep you topped off along the way, of course.
As the more art-inclined gamers among us will know, the (in)famous Ecce Homo painting by Elias Garcia Martinez was all but ruined during its latest restoration in 2012. It's a sad tale of someone less-than-capable being tasked with something that only a very capable person could pull off, and wrecking the underlying artwork in the process of doing so. Well, if you head on over to Hitman 2 (or 3)'s Sapienza level and check out the paintings in the church, you may find something downright fascinating.
Sylvester Stallone's sci-fi classic Demolition Man may have been forgotten by the younger generations, but it pops up as a pop-culture reference every now and then. Its gag with the inexplicable three seashells even made its way into numerous Deus Ex: Human Revolution bathrooms, making for a subtle but utterly delightful easter egg that not everyone might recognize.
While visiting Kashyyk in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, players may end up coming across everyone's least favorite Gungan encased in carbonite. For whatever reason, it seems that Jar Jar Binks ended up getting turned into a trophy, of all things. The only confusing part about this whole shindig is - who'd even want Jar Jar as a trophy?
Borderlands 2 is chock-full of easter eggs both big and small, but the one pertaining to Lord of the Rings, of all things, usually ends up getting overshadowed in lieu of the decidedly flashier Minecraft dungeon. This moderately annoying but extremely rewarding quest tasks the Vault Hunter with taking a ring from the very start of the game all the way to its final area. Along the way, all manner of Tolkienesque hijinks ensue, and the final reward is a guaranteed E-tech item - among a variety of other high-end loot.
Note, however, that it is only available in the True Vault Hunter mode and upwards! Oh, you also cannot play co-op, die, fast-travel, or quite the game. Have fun!
Players who enjoyed Just Cause 2 at launch may recall a particularly unnerving - and comprehensive - easter egg located in the upper left corner of the map. A mysterious island that straight-up crashes your airplane should you come near it. Well, that very same island features a number of LOST references, including (but not limited to) the Hatch, the SEARCH tree trunks, and the smoke monster itself! Creepy stuff.
Bethesda is not shy about including Lovecraftian entities and cosmic horror references in their first-party titles. In Fallout 4, in particular, this materializes in a full-on mini-dungeon that culminates in a terrifying sequence that may or may not include a specific kind of time travel. Dunwich Borers is a unique experience in this game, and a must-play piece of content, whether you classify it as an easter egg or not.
State of Decay 2 has got oodles of references to other zombie media, and one of those relates to none other than Plants vs. Zombies! Specifically, this particular easter egg got transferred over when the map from the first State of Decay got ported over to State of Decay 2, and players may find themselves in front of a very familiar scene. With lawnmowers, sunflowers, and heaps of dead zombies. Gee, what could this be?
Though the Scarecrow doesn't play a huge role in Batman: Arkham City, his presence can still be felt. Specifically, he seems to have used one of the ships in the port area of the map to torture inmates and perform experiments on them. The kicker, however, is that this section is never referenced by the rest of the game, and isn't even clearly pointed out as an interactive area. Just use the 'CityOfTerror' password via the Sequencer and prepare for spooks.
The Division has got a fair few scannable ECHO items that players can interact with to see and hear certain slice-of-life events that took place during the downfall of New York. A particular ECHO, however, is a clear and pointed reference to one of the iconic scenes from Shaun of the Dead. An easy way to get fans of the movie to like a game, we reckon!
Finally, this is the big one, and an obscure one. Odds are that most gamers had never even heard about it, but boy is it a doozy. The entire event is far more complex than just about anything else on this list. Or most other easter eggs in general, for that matter! So, bear with us here.
First, there was a hidden song. In the hidden song, there was a Morse code. This Morse code led people to a website. On the website, there were strange, inexplicable symbols. These symbols then led to the discovery of a secret code. It was a long and storied mystery, as you can probably tell, and one that eventually led people to four real-world keys. These were located in San Francisco, Bath, Helsinki, and Sydney. No, really.
Kotaku's summary of the easter egg is downright impeccable and we cannot recommend it enough. The bottom line? One of the four keys will unlock something at the base of the Eiffel Tower in 2113. No, no, really. It's quite surreal, truly, and there's no telling what it all means. A gift to the future generations, indeed.
And there you have it! We hope you learned about some of these fascinating little tidbits today, as we've discovered that they're way less popular than, say, the heart at the center of GTA IV's Statue of Happiness... now that's a creepy one. With that, these should give you plenty to think about, and perhaps you'll even set off looking for some of them yourself!
To that end, you may find our Summer Game Sale quite handy. We've got discounts going all the way up to 90% off, and with rotating sales and goodies, you're bound to find something to play on Easter, eggs included or not.
