BATTLE ROYALE
It is a weird experience to walk through the forest and hear the birds talking about Fortnite.
Battle Royal, that is the name of the game these days. Fortnite, PUBG, Apex and plethora of similar games are ingrained in pop culture and it seems they won’t leave that soon. And why should they? The battle royal concept is easy to love and understand. Get 100 players and pit them one against another. Last player standing wins. It is simple as that and that simplicity is what is attracting the crowd. Heck, even Tetris used that concept with it’s Tetris 99. But with the popularity of battle royals, especially among kids, it seems that single player games are not getting enough love.

MELDING STORY WITH GAMEPLAY
Let me be clear, there is no shortage of single player games. Even Fortnite has a single player mode. A single player game is like a good book - it starts, it develops, amazes you with the story, graphics, sound or all three, and then leaves you there feeling satisfied, and it is an experience that can be relived over and over, each time differently, unlike the movies (but that is a topic for another time).
Take any Assassin’s Creed game for example. You can enjoy it from start to finish all by yourself. Same goes for Batman Arkham games. Those games combine engaging story with sublime gameplay that makes it flow so good there really is no need for a second player to join you. It is a complete single player experience.

STATUS - SINGLE
There is only so much platforming you can do and thug-beating you can unleash until you yearn for playing something different, trying a different genre.
Fighting game perhaps? But those are always better in multiplayer, right? Well, it seems that developers thought the same thing and thankfully did something about it to introduce more players to their franchises that don’t necessarily have a friend by their side every time they feel like cracking some ribs and breaking some c-c-combos.
NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat and Injustice series are the best example of this. They engage players with a deep and action-packed story and cutscenes, that blends with gameplay seamlessly, and it’s easy to see why would someone play it for that reason alone. Injustice game even spawned a whole comic series that is a great read and is still ongoing. Tekken series relied on few cutscenes to tell the story before, but with their latest installment, Tekken 7, they went all in and told an epic story that could have easily worked as an animated movie.

There is no shortage of both single and multiplayer games, but adding substantial singleplayer mode to a game that heavily relies on multiplayer could bring in more players to that genre.
