It's time for a short break from all the AAA goodness that's been dominating the gaming landscape over the past few months. Elden Ring and Wonderlands and LEGO are all pretty darn great, but sometimes, it's time to check out the awesome new indies that have been coming out.
Or ones that are about to come out, in this specific case. What we've got for you today is a short overview of three exciting new releases that are bound to tickle your fancy! From sci-fi puzzle adventures to hack 'n' slash action titles, the games featured here cover a very wide niche gap indeed. Better still, they're pretty interesting and even innovative concepts, making them a good choice for the more experimental gamer.
So, if you're in the market for something a bit more lightweight and manageable or, perhaps, got your paws on a Steam Deck already and want something truly fresh to play on it, you're going to want to scroll ahead for sure. Have fun!
Now, what's particularly interesting is that two of today's featured indies are coming out - to-day. That's right, you can practically start playing 2/3rds of the games referenced here as soon as you're done reading about them. Almost. Should make for an excellent weekend escapade, if nothing else!
Velone is a delightfully odd game, and in much the same way as the old PopCap puzzlers were. Except, of course, that it's way more complex and advanced. Basically, players are tasked with saving an entire alien planet from environmental collapse caused by an imminent asteroid crash. The only way to stop this from happening is to build and program unique hydraulic mechanisms that could kickstart the planetary energy production pipeline once more. You either enjoy the premise or you don't, honestly.
This is a logical puzzler through and through. To that end, Velone simply won't be for everyone. If you find yourself enjoying games such as Factorio and Satisfactory, however, there's merit in this title. If for no other reason, then because it promises to reveal a fascinating alien culture as you progress through its 40 puzzles!
Effectively the polar opposite of Velone, Godlike Burger is a fast, snappy, and dynamic management game about an interstellar burger restaurant. At face value. The gist of the game is that players need to kill their own customers and use them to make the best burger patties this side of Sponge Bob. This is accomplished through the use of traps, poisons, and a trusty meat cleaver.
Players, then, get to play a management and cooking game, in that they manage their restaurant and prepare various unique recipes, as well as work out ways to kill their own loyal customers. Godlike Burger is neat like that, for sure. The game promises an experience unlike most anything else we've seen so far. Plus, it's got a sort of a Futurama-esque style to it, and it very well could be an instant classic. Also looks to be an excellent choice for the Steam Deck!
Of all three awesome indie games featured in this article, The Serpent Rogue is probably the closest to a regular genre archetype. At its core, this game is an ARPG. Players take control over a witch doctor, basically. Their job? To protect their universe from the mysterious Serpent Rogue, which is accomplished through leveraging both alchemy and magic in their favor.
What's interesting is that The Serpent Rogue is described as a "botanical action-adventure," as combat isn't the main focus. Instead, players need to shapeshift and use the forces of nature to stay alive. For what it's worth, it seems that the game will have a Pathologic angle to it. It seems like a strange, methodical adventure. To say nothing of the functionally limitless alchemy features provided to the player. Should be a hoot!
Quite a few twists and tangles for such a short list of awesome new indies, isn't it? We hadn't expected April to be quite so fruitful in this respect, yet here we are. We hope at least one of these got you intrigued because we'll be giving them all a shot as soon as they come out!
Now, while today's been all about indie gaming, we're hardly done covering this week's AAA and AA happenings. If you need a taste, here are a few recommended picks you may want to check out:
On top of all of that, it's also worth keeping in mind that we've got a big Spring Sale running right this instant. Discounts go all the way up to 90% off, and we've got deals from Paradox Interactive, Bethesda, 2K, Ubisoft, and many, many others. For those who just can't bear playing a non-AAA game, now's the time to splurge, we reckon.
So, what will it be?
