Oh, and be quick!
Buckle your seatbelts for a whistle-top tour of everything you need to know about this evolution of the Sonic game.
No introduction is needed. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most iconic video game characters of the last three decades. Whether, like me, you first encountered his sensation of speed and precision on the Mega Drive in the 1990s. Or you were hooked along the way by one of the many 2D and 3D platform installments, such as Sonic Mania, or the newer Sonic Origins.
It's hard not to feel a buzz of excitement in anticipation of our speedy hero's game-changing evolution to an Open Zone platform!
Open World games have been trending for more than ten years, with developers increasingly handing the reigns to gamers to explore their worlds freely without constraint. We know from experience how this open-ended gameplay can lead to hours of immersion!
More traditional Open World games such as Zelda, Minecraft, or Elden Ring (read more about Elden Ring here) differ greatly, however, from the high-speed Sonic experience which has, up until now, been successfully delivered on a linear platform - with progressing levels, and enemies to defeat along the way. How will the high-velocity essence of Sonic fare with the freedom of an open-ended platform?
This is where Sega are keen to differentiate between Open World and Open Zone platforms. Sega describe their innovative Open Zone approach as allowing for the best of all worlds by facilitating open-ended play and exploration, but within a world map landscape which consists of diverse gameplay challenges.
As well as high-speed exploration, challenges include more familiar platform-based action such as fully-fleshed-out combat systems and puzzle-solving to uncover hidden secrets.
And of course, Sonic wouldn't be Sonic without Rings!
The launch of Sonic Frontiers on November 8th, 2022 is a historic event for Sonic fans across the globe. It marks the day that Sonic is transported to the open-zone platform.

Sonic Frontiers is launching on all the usual platforms. As you would expect, however, some basic system specs are required to play the game on your PC. As a minimum these requirements are:
Although the above will be sufficient for a good gaming experience, for optimal performance, the following hardware specs are recommended:
The USP of Sonic games is of course speed. In this latest venture, Sonic blazes across five vast islands that make up the world map, whilst completing challenges and combatting enemies on his journey. What's not to like? It's like a hedgehog version of Parkour on fast-forward, with mini-games, mysteries, and battles thrown into the mix!
One of the other benefits of this open-zone format is that there is enough content built into the game to allow for exploration and consistent challenge without the need for increasing the difficulty of the gameplay. This ensures a seamless sense of speed (the name of the game, right?), which isn't hampered by frustratingly difficult levels that need to be completed in order to progress.
Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean Sonic Frontiers is easy, but it avoids banging your head against a brick wall when you hit a stumbling block when you can simply zoom off to another part of the game and return at your own will!
Whether you are a staunch Sonic fan or just looking for a bit of fast-paced fun and adventure, Sonic Frontiers will be sure to get the adrenaline juices pumping and leave you with a smile on your face as you buzz through open terrain at supersonic speeds and immerse yourself in high-velocity action.
Excited? Then stay tuned for further updates, and be sure to take advantage of pre-purchase deals today to experience Sonic as never before!
