Is there something about Spring that inspires a rebirth of some of the goriest horror titles the genre has to offer? Something about the sound of birds tweeting that makes us want to be scared out of our pants? First, a cinematic return of the classic slasher Scream, and now a remake of the gruesome Resident Evil 4 (RE4). It's like Halloween all over again. We love it!
We've had a lot of fun delving into the new features we can expect from the RE4 Remake. These include additional side-quests to expand the size of the game, life-saving stealth features, boss revamps, knife-based parrying, and new gear and customization functionality. Now let's take a look at the original RE4, and how Capcom approached the RE2 and RE3 remakes as we prepare for the release of this sure-to-be gothic blockbuster.

Considered one of the best survival horror games ever made, and a firm fan-favorite, RE4 immerses you in a tense and unrelenting world where only the bravest survive. Play as the former police officer of RE2 Leon Kennedy, and embark on a perilous quest to rescue the President's daughter, Ashley Graham, from the clasps of the mysterious Los Illuminados cult.
In a surprise departure from the franchise's previous games, there are no zombies in RE4. Instead, you must battle your way through brainwashed henchmen of the Los Illuminados cult, including the iconic chainsaw-wielding Dr. Salvador, grotesque creatures, and hordes of possessed villagers. Villagers who have been infected by a parasitic life form and who move with more deadly swiftness and agility than the lifeless creatures of previous games.
Survive the intense combat, facilitated by enhanced gameplay mechanics and a greater capacity for upgrading and carrying weaponry, and solve the puzzles necessary to save the President's daughter.
But rescuing Ashley doesn't signify the end of the game. Instead, it gives you another life to protect as you work together to uncover the sinister plot behind Los Illuminados and defeat the evil ringmaster once and for all.
Just be sure to save your progress as you go, which is much easier than in previous titles. You don't want your death to signify game over for Leon and Ashley. Not when so much is at stake!
Summed up beautifully by video game critic Leon Hurley as “A lovingly crafted return that perfectly recaptures what made the original great”, RE2 was the first of the remakes and therefore a good place to start as we make our Resident Evil 4 preparations!
Released in 2019 to critical acclaim, the RE2 remake was praised for its faithful recreation of the original game's atmosphere and story arc, as well as its updated graphics and gameplay mechanics. All good indicators of what's to come with the reimagining of the fourth installment.
Set in the fictional Raccoon City, where a deadly virus has turned most of the population into zombies, players take on the roles of rookie police officer Leon Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield.
Choose your player and navigate your way through the zombie-infested streets of the city, solving puzzles and battling hordes of the living dead as you attempt to uncover the truth behind the outbreak.
With updated controls and a new over-the-shoulder camera perspective to put you closer to the intense and gory action - yikes! This clever remake brings the horror of the 1998 classic to a new generation of gamers.
Additional features include extra puzzles to solve and expanded areas to explore, including the satisfyingly sprawling police station. Modern graphics and sound design further enhance the eerily tense atmosphere associated with the series and serve to bring to life the terrifying creatures of the dead. This game is not for the faint-hearted.
Oh, and the AI of your enemies has improved, making them more aggressive and challenging to defeat. Good luck!
Another killer remaster from Capcom, the RE3 Remake once again manages to recreate the horror and tension of the late ‘90s original whilst completely modernizing its gameplay. It does seem that Capcom are good at this! Indeed, despite receiving criticism for being shorter than the original, the quality of the remake is pretty much undisputed.
Set at the same time and in the same location as RE2, this third installment focuses on the parallel story of Jill Valentine and her attempts to escape the zombie-infested Raccoon City. Not easy when the iconic Nemesis is in hot pursuit. Especially when the remake has equipped Nemesis with new abilities and attacks to make him more fearsome than ever.
Considerably less '90s, the 2020 Jill is quick-witted, sarcastic, and suitably irritable given the circumstances. Our first glimpse of our modern-day protagonist, and in fact the stunning cinematic visuals of the entire remake, is in the phenomenal one-shot opening scene in which Nemesis attacks Jill in her collapsing apartment block.
The action of the intro doesn't let up throughout the entire campaign which, like the original, is much faster-paced and more combat-orientated than its predecessor. Think fewer puzzles, less time for exploration, and instead more intense and explosive ammo-fueled battles with life and death pursuits. This will give you a feel for what RE3 brings to the table.
If like us you are chomping at the bit and not sure what to do with yourself as you count down the days until the March 24th release of the RE4 Remake, hopefully, this article has reminded you of some of the other awesome games in the series that you can play while you wait.
Or perhaps, it has just served to torture you further by reminding you of how good the new release is likely to be! If it's the latter then, our sincere apologies. We are just trying to fill the days till we can get our hands on the legendary remake!
If you really can't wait any longer, perhaps now is the time to mention that Capcom have just released a playable demo to tide you over! In fact, you can read all about the preview here.
Just don't blame us if whetting your appetite ends up making the wait for the full game even more agonizing! And remember, good things come to those that wait!
