Have you been itching at the bits to play an immersive, out-there role-playing game set in the grim future of Warhammer 40,000? Well, we don't blame you if you have, because we've been sorely missing something along those lines. Enter Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, a chaotically fascinating new 40K experience as we've never had before.
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader is being produced by none other than Owlcat Games, the good people who have penned Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and its many awesome expansion packs. Pathfinder is considered to be one of the very best modern CRPGs and video game renditions of Dungeons and Dragons. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that we're extremely excited about Rogue Trader, too.
In Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, players step into the boots of newly created Rogue Traders. This infamous Rogue Trader will be tasked with expanding the borders of imperial control, and since Rogue Traders operate on the knife's edge between loyalty to the Emperor and outright Chaos worshipping, this gives players ample opportunities to create their own personal journeys.
No Space Marines here, mind! Your Rogue Trader family is all you're getting.
As you'd expect, then, Rogue Trader is a true, full-fledged CRPG. The really important bit, gameplay-wise, is that Owlcat is trying to adapt the classic Rogue Trader ruleset (made for a board game) that only veteran WH40K fans might recall. Broadly speaking, however, we can say that Rogue Trader is an isometric, turn-based role-playing game. Players will get to assemble their own crew of Imperial heroes, questionable psykers, and even Xeno affiliates to help them out on their adventure.
Your party of up to six comrades will need to straddle the line between the Imperium and Xeno allegiance, mind. As Rogue Traders generally operate slightly beyond the usual level of Imperial control, but Owlcat did warn us that treason is a serious concern in Rogue Trader. So, expect a fairly deep and engaging story where your choices matter.
The entirety of Rogue Trader is set in the Koronus Expanse, which players get to explore using their own personal Voidship vessel. The specifics of how much content there is in the game haven't yet been revealed, but given Owlcat Games' previous output, we expect that we're in for a very big CRPG. Note, too, that it's about 100 GB in size, meaning there's a load of pretty assets to look at, if nothing else. Good stuff!
Something to consider, though, is that there will be several post-launch DLC campaigns coming to Rogue Trader, and each of them will take roughly 15 hours to complete. If DLCs are this big, you know the game is far heftier than they are.
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader is coming out on PC on December 7, 2023. If you're reading this article at the time of its release, then we've got just over a week to prepare for this adventure! And, moreover, you should stay tuned to 2Game specifically, as we've got early adopter discounts planned!
Before jotting down a pre-order, though, odds are that you'd like to confirm that the game will work on your PC in the first place, right? Boy howdy, we've got some good news for you, in that case. Here are all the official spec requirements!
As many of you will already know, the recommended GTX 1050Ti is very, very old indeed. This graphics processor came out back in 2016, more specifically, meaning it's close to a decade old. In other words, you're going to be very hard-pressed not to be able to run Rogue Trader, as the game is bound to perform phenomenally well on anything and everything.
A candidate for our Steam Decks, perhaps? Depends on the game's UX and UI, more so than on the system requirements themselves, from the looks of it!
Another important technicality we'd like to discuss here are Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader's different content editions. Notably, Owlcat Game is set to release three different versions of Rogue Trader on December 7, each of which comes with a different suite of goodies and a different price point. Here are all the pertinent details.
This is the basic, most affordable version of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader. This is, note, not a full-priced AAA game, which means you'll be able to get it at a substantially lower price, to boot.
Expect Rogue Trader for PC to set you back $49,99 or your regional equivalent. Again, you're going to want to stick around to see 2Game's day one discounts, if you'd like to save a few bucks!
The Deluxe version of Rogue Trader is a far more substantial package than the base game. Priced at $64,99, this version of the game comes with a wealth of bonus goodies and in-game items that'll make your experience a bit more interesting from the onset:
Finally, the Voidfarer edition of Rogue Trader is the ultimate version of the game, featuring virtually everything that Owlcat Games is currently planning to develop for it. It's an expensive purchase, to be sure, priced at a whopping $99,99 or your regional equivalent, but you're getting everything included with the Deluxe Edition and the Season Pass, and extra in-game goodies:
If Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader seems like a remarkably promising CRPG to you, too, you're not the only one. True CRPGs have been the purview of fantasy adventures for the longest time, to the point where such sci-fi experiences are too few and far between to even be considered, really. Rogue Trader has the potential and the pedigree to change this, especially considering its XCOM-like turn-based combat, and the ridiculous amount of lore for the devs to draw upon.
We're just a short while away from finally playing the game ourselves, and we aim to cover it more in the future, too. So - stay tuned. And remember: day one discounts await, right here at 2Game!
