I'll be the first to say that I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of playing anything and everything on the tried-and-true mouse and keyboard combo, including games such as Forza Horizon. Similarly, I'll also be the first to admit that, sometimes, enjoying a game using a delightfully ergonomic controller is the way to go, instead. That's where the Xbox Controller comes into the picture: easy to use, easy to plug into any device you have, and affordable - this is the controller of choice for most gamers.
But, how do you get it to work on your PC as well as your console? It's quite easy, actually!
So, there's a grand total of three ways you could be plugging any of your modern Xbox controllers into your PC. This means the classic Xbox 360 controller, the Xbox One controller, and the Xbox Series controller. They are, in a sense, almost fully interchangeable as far as the most obvious connection method is concerned: just plug it right into your PC using a USB cable.
Of course, you will need to take note of your controller's input: X360 and Xbox One gamepads have a micro USB slot, while Xbox Series controllers support USB-C only. You're bound to have an appropriate cable around somewhere, though, so just plug one right in and you're good to go.
Some of us, however, prefer not to rely on cables if at all possible. That's where the newer controllers' Xbox Wireless Adapter comes into the picture. This subtle little USB dongle goes right into your PC's free USB port, and it's good to go.
When the Wireless Adapter is active, turn on your Xbox One or Series controller and wait for the Xbox button to start flashing. First, press and hold theĀ ((( Pair button on the dongle until its LED begins to blink. Then, between the shoulder buttons of your controller, you'll see a small ((( Pair button: press and hold it until the small LED light flashes.
That's it!
If, however, you're not keen on splurging on a dedicated dongle and your PC is Bluetooth-enabled, you may wish to try connecting your gamepad that way, instead. To do so, turn on your gamepad and then hold the Xbox button for three seconds, until the Xbox symbol begins to flash.
Right after that, press and hold the ((( Pair button between the gamepad's shoulder buttons. On your PC, go to the following menu: Settings > Devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Everything Else. Then, find your controller, pair it up, and you can begin gaming!
