As you could've plainly seen upon checking into our pre-release coverage, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2's Operations Mode is one of the game's most highly anticipated features for us! The campaign is great fun and we love it, of course, as it continues the long anticipated story of Sergeant Titus after his original adventure, but Operations is an optional live-service mode with its own missions, progression, and other fun goodies.
Can you play it right away, though? Or is there a set of prerequisites for you to wrap up in campaign mode before it unlocks? Here's what you need to know.
The surprising bit about Operations Mode is that it is tightly intervowen with Space Marine 2's main campaign mode. Whereas the campaign is a fully fixed and finely curated experience, however, Operations trades in these features for a more randomized and open-ended take on the same third-person combat formula.
While Titus and his squad are tearing up the place in the campaign, the second squad under his command takes up their own objectives on other battlefields, also under Titus' command. This means that Operations Mode missions happen in parallel with the main campaign, and are thus unlocked one by one in the order of them taking place.
Operations Mode thus unlocks piecemeal, and the only way to gain access to all six of its release day missions is to complete the main campaign mode before jumping into it. As shown on the screenshot above, though, you could also treat Operations as main campaign side-quests if you like, jumping in and out of it as new content is unlocked.
