The Outer Worlds, a new open-world role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment, released recently and blew everyone away. If you missed out on it you can read about it here. The Outer Worlds introduced a variety of different weapons, weapon categories, and damage types. Even better, you can customize them all via different modifications and upgrades. But there is a specific type of weapons I would like to talk about today: The Outer Worlds science weapons. With them you can create a whole new dimension of fun and prove that not every combat encounter needs to be taken care by filling stuff up with bullets. Let’s take a look at them!

What are Outer Worlds Science weapons?

Outer Worlds Phineas Wells

The science weapons of Outer Worlds are somewhat of a mystery with not much known about them. They are unique weapons with special abilities that can be found throughout the galaxy if one is brave enough to try and track them down. Unlike the other weapons which use the respective skill of long guns, heavy guns, handguns, or one and two-handed melee to calculate their critical chance and damage, science weapons use your science skill. But instead of your science skill being used to calculate damage and critical chance, it will also prolong the special effect of the weapon.

In addition to that, each of the existing science weapons is also classified as one of the main weapon categories. Meaning you will be able to cause even more havoc with them as your skills in the respective category enter the damage calculation. Not to mention they are quite hilarious to use.

Mandibular Rearranger

Outer Worlds Mandibular Rearranger science weapon

This very sciency-sounding weapon is the coolest one to use if you prefer the surprise attack approach. I promise you’ll get that joke in a moment.

Mandibular Rearranger is a one-handed melee weapon which slows the target upon successful hit. If used on the same target enough times it will eventually freeze them in place, rendering them powerless. It is also quite good at rearranging the target’s bone structure if applied properly.

Mind Control Ray

Outer Worlds Mind Control Ray science weapon

It wouldn’t be a proper science fiction game without a good old-fashioned mind control ray. And where better for it to be stashed away than a space lab?

The Mind Control Ray is categorised as a long gun. Its usage is pretty straightforward – point the mind-controlling end at whoever you want to make your berserker puppet and fire. The ray will overpower the target’s mind and make them fight their allies. A good way to break the pace of a shootout is to sneak into the enemy camp and mind control them one by one, until there is only one left standing. Just look at it as your private battle royale event. To put the odds in your favour, the target under your control will receive additional attack speed based on your science skill level.

Gloop Gun

Outer Worlds Gloop Gun science weapon

Not all science weapons need menacing or scientific-sounding names, as proved by the Gloop Gun. Gloop Gun is a heavy weapon that does one very simple thing – shoots a large blob of blue gloop.

Of course, that’s not all. If you manage to hit an enemy directly they will be, rather unceremoniously, catapulted into the air. If you were so unlucky to have met a giant during your first playthrough of Skyrim and thought it would be a good idea to attack it, be prepared to relive that painful memory, except from the giant’s perspective.

The Gloop Gun is best used to attack enemies in a group, as it can affect (and catapult) multiple foes with a single shot. Being hit by the goop shocks and weakens them for a while. Your science level increases the duration.

Prismatic Hammer

Prismatic Hammer science weapon

Speaking of handling groups of enemies, the Prismatic Hammer can sure make an impact in those situations. The Prismatic Hammer is a two-handed melee weapon with two different attacks, and the highest requirement of science level to use efficiently of all the science weapons.

Being an oversized two-handed hammer, the Prismatic Hammer features a wide sweeping attack being able to hit multiple targets at once. Power attacks with the hammer will release a blast of energy which hits multiple targets at a distance.

However, there is a reason it requires such a high science level to be used efficiently. The Prismatic Hammer can make full use of every type of damage, cycling through them based on your skill. The energy blast will take the form of whatever the current type of damage is, while the sweeping strike will inflict multiple damage types at the same time.

Shrink Ray

Shrink Ray science weapon

Another classic science fiction weapon makes an appearance as Outer Worlds Science Weapon – the Shrink Ray. It is categorised as a handgun and deals plasma damage. If you ever find yourself facing too big of a threat consider making your life a little bit easier and use the Shrink Ray.

The Shrink Ray will fire a continuous beam of plasma energy which will reduce your enemy’s size, turning them into nothing but an annoying little bug. How much you can shrink an enemy is dependent on your science skill level, so if you’re planning on walking over your enemies make sure to max it out as soon as possible. In addition to having their size drastically reduced, the Shrink Ray will also lower your enemy’s stats. The smaller they are the less damage they will be able to deal.

Have you collected and test out all the science weapons yet? Do you have any ideas how to cause the most ridiculousness with them? Tell us in the comments, and if you still haven’t, get your copy of The Outer Worlds right HERE on 2game.

Until next time, and remember to make science come alive!
