If there's one thing we do not lack when it comes to PC gaming, it's variety. The sheer number of differences between genres, franchises, and - heck - even different entries within the same series is astonishing, and you can rest assured that there's always something new and neat waiting for you if you know where to look. Take arcade games, for example!
Arcades are the games that you wouldn't find out of place in an actual video gaming arcade back in the '90s. Rapid-fire titles where gameplay loop is the king and everything else is secondary or outright nonexistent. The kind of thing that would absolutely munch on your (and your parents!) spare change for just one more play, and you'd still keep coming back to it time and again.
Now, arcade games aren't the powerhouses they once were. Trends change, and so pure gameplay loops have given way to RPG-centric progression systems and the like. We just enjoy seeing numbers go up, that's how it is. The RPGification of gaming isn't universal, though, and arcades do still exist, even if via remasters and remakes. And hey, if you need some of that classic gameplay goodness, you've come to just the right place.
As far as racing goes, finding a genuinely arcadey game nowadays is no mean feat, but we think we've got an excellent candidate in Redout 2. The sense of speed you get from going thousands of kilometers per hour is downright ridiculous, and the fancy customization options keep things interesting for a long while. Most importantly, it's so easy to just pick up and play, and enjoy your time with it!
If you want a genuine, honest-to-goodness Arcade experience, one of Capcom's Arcade Stadium games comes highly recommended. These multi-title bundles give you a virtual arcade all of your own, where you get to interact with classic Capcom titles of the yesteryear.
Of course, if you're into beat 'em ups, specifically, then you may wish to splurge on Capcom's dedicated Beat 'Em Up bundle, featuring the likes of The King of Dragons, Captain Commando, and Final Fight just to list a few. Fast, focused, and working perfectly on modern systems, this one's a real joy to experience across the board.
Ghosts 'n' Goblins is one of those games that the older gamers will specifically remember wasting spare change on, day-in, day-out. Well, toss a few anti-frustration features into the mix, update the graphics, and you've got a veritable arcade powerhouse of a game. That's precisely what Resurrection is! And at almost 70% off, it's a real steal.
If Mega Man is what you year, but you're not in the market for the old classics featured below, then Mega Man 11 might be just the ticket. This modernized, albeit true-to-form version of the beloved platformer has all the makings of a compelling franchise entry, with a whole host of fancy and modern improvements thrown in for good measure.
But hey, if true, genuine classics are what you're after, then there's no better option than the acclaimed Mega Man Legacy Collection from Capcom! Featuring the six original MM titles properly emulated and running on modern rigs, this is a true must-have for franchise fans.
The only Early Access game on this list, Final Knight admittedly teeters on the knife's edge between a light RPG and an arcade beat 'em up, but its gameplay leans more heavily towards something like Castle Crashers if you ask us. It's a great experience across the board, though, and it gives you a more modern take on the beloved arcade formula.
Another racing game, this time featuring an actual human runner running for their life! In DeathSprint 66, you and up to 8 other players take on the roles of super-speedy runners jumping, drifting, sliding, and - yes - running their way for victory. It's a bloody one, folks, keep in mind.
Make Way harkens back to the early aughts' arcade PC games with its bird's eye view of the custom-built race-tracks you yourself have created. This delightful hotseat arcade racing game has oodles of community content to peruse, a bunch of wacky vehicles to choose from, and a really fun gameplay loop, to boot.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD is an excellent rendition of a true arcade classic. Basically, you get to take control over a monkey trapped in a speeding ball careening towards victory. Or death, perhaps - whichever comes sooner. With bananas to collect and tracks to race through, though, everything else falls by the wayside.
