Zoh Shia Hunting Guide for Monster Hunter Wilds

The thing to note about Zoh Shia right off the bat is that it's not necessarily the hardest creature in the game, though it certainly does pack a hell of a punch on top of being a fairly complicated fight in general.

Broadly, Zoh Shia fights in three phases. The first is its crystallized form, where it's entirely encased in regenerating Wylk crystals that have to be broken off before you can deal any damage to the creature at all. After a prolonged game of cat and mouse with you slowly chipping away at Zoh Shia's exposed bits, you'll be able to trigger the second phase of the fight. This kicks off when Zoh Shia exposes its own head and, later on, wings, allowing you to easily deal critical damage to them... if you can reach them. The rest of the creature's body still functions the same as it did in phase one at this point. Note that Zoh Shia begins to deal massive fire damage in phase two of its fight.

Finally, the third and most dangerous phase of the fight is when Zoh Shia sheds its crystalline exoskeleton entirely, revealing its true form. On one hand, phase three Zoh Shia deals extreme amounts of fire and lightning damage, but it's susceptible to damage and will not be able to regrow its Wylk crystals. It turns into a glass cannon at the end, basically, which means you can hack it to bits if you can avoid its AoE attacks when they trigger.

Whereas Large Monsters such as Arkveld can be found roaming across Monster Hunter Wilds open-world biomes, Zoh Shia is currently a fixed one-off encounter in the main campaign. This means it's locked into its arena and, as such, you always have ready access to a bunch of handy tools strewn nearby. This includes Shrine Fragments you can drop onto Zoh Shia's head, fire off Wyrmsbane using your slinger for instant interrupts, and even blow up the creature's own spawned Wylk crystals using Thundercysts strewn around the arena.

Further, destroying Zoh Shia's crystalline armor can make it drop Crystal Fragments, which you can then pick up and fire as Heavy Piercing Pods. These will instantly break off large chunks of the creature's armored shell, allowing you to spiral the first two phases of the fight if you get a good combo going.

Zoh Shia's most punishing attacks are its fire and lightning moves, both of which can be avoided by keeping a fair distance from the creature as it charges up. Note, too, that you can use Wylk crystals as cover when Zoh Shia begins its mid-fight fire AoE attack.
