Welcome to our snowy video games Christmas extravaganza to get you into the holiday spirit! It's that time of the year again: Christmas. We don't know about you, but winter video games are a must lately, simply because there's no more snow during the holiday season where yours truly lives. Of course, this depends on your geographical location and historical weather and climate data, but chances are that you, too, might be facing the same problem. If that's the case, we bet you're in the market for snowy Christmas video games, too!
That's precisely what this article is going to be dealing with. To try and get you into the Christmasy groove, we'd like to present you with a variety of games that, even if they don't feature Santa Claus himself, Christmas trees, Christmas presents, or elves, at least have snow! Whether it's a small section of the game or the full package, we've prepared a few titles that we believe deliver precisely the experience we're looking for. Perhaps you'll find something to tickle your fancy as well.
Without further ado, let us show you what we're talking about!
In picking Christmas video games for this article, we relied on gut feeling and personal experience: two completely subjective sensibilities that may or may not trigger the same feelings in your case. We're cheeky like that.
Jokes aside, our goal was to pick a considerable variety of games that tug at the right strings. Namely, they should have snow in them, and a particular wintry atmosphere. If you, too, are struggling with a Christmastime that looks like late Autumn, these games should help alleviate the problem. We've got role-playing games, action adventures, shooters, and even some Lovecraftian horror. Some of these games actually do take place around Christmas, while others are simply snowy for this or that reason.
What they all share, though, is that sense of traditional wintry frost that we mentioned above. We recommend you get a cup of your favorite warm beverage and settle in, because you're about to pick your game of the season.
We're kicking off strong with games that feature snow and winter as a centerpiece. These titles will take you through a frozen romp like no other, making that warm beverage of yours a crucial implement for gaming.
First and foremost comes Batman: Arkham Origins. This Batman Arkham game differs from the Asylum, City, and Knight titles in that it wasn't developed by Rocksteady. This gave it a bit of a bad name at launch, but we assure you, it's every bit as awesome as the rest of the Arkham games are. Better still, it's a perfect fit for this article! not only does it take place during Christmastime in Gotham, but it's also got amazing snow effects and physics. Body-slamming thugs into snow has never felt this good, we promise.
No less obvious a choice is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, as long as you stick to the snowy regions of the continent. This classic RPG offers an experience like no other when it comes to wintry exploration, and especially keen adventurers can even install hardcore winter survival mods. Completely optional, of course, but it sure does make for unforgettable gameplay experience. If you've not yet played Skyrim, now's the best time to get to it!
Our third pick is Frostpunk. This survival-strategy title is a fair bit different than the rest of our winter video games. Namely, this is a considerably hardcore settlement sim where players have to balance their people's needs with downright totalitarian law-making. It's a real boon, if we might say so. Coming from the creators of This War of Mine, we expected nothing less.
We're huge fans of seasonal events. Especially when it comes to snowy seasonal events. Just yesterday, we spoke about Hitman 2 and the downright ridiculous amount of content that the developers have prepared for December. Of course, it's one of our choices for this article, too! We invite you to read more about Hitman 2 December content, because it may well be what you're looking for. This is for fans of singleplayer games, but what about CO-OP gamers?
No worries! We've got a special something for you, too. That's Killing Floor 2, to be more precise. This amazing cooperative first-person survival shooter is known for the developers' penchant for cool seasonal events. Christmastime is no different, as Killing Floor Winter 2019 content includes an arsenal of new weapons, a new boss, and a number of new cosmetics to earn! That ought to keep you busy, don't you think?
Now - you might be saying - these are all awesome games, but what about stuff that you might not have heard of? No worries there, because we've prepared a few way more unexpected titles to pick and choose from, too.
First comes Mafia II, and before you ask 'what', it's because of the game's incredible introductory sequence. Not the WW2 stuff, but the coming-to-town chapter that follows after. The atmosphere is awesome, and it really sets the tone for the rest of the game. Most of it doesn't take place during Christmastime, but that's okay, we think.
Far less known is the neat Lovecraftian horror survival Fade to Silence, which will terrify you in all the right ways. What do you know, it's also snowy all over, so it's also a perfect match for this article. We recommend you get it if you're in the market for something less traditional and more disturbing.
Impact Winter is similar in some ways but wildly different in others. Here, you'll have to survive 30 in-game days in an immersive and unpredictable wintry wonderland. It's grimmer than that, but you get the gist.
OK, so these Christmas video games may not feature the big man Santa Claus himself, but they are full of winter wonder, which is what we are all looking for at this time of year to get you into the holiday spirit. We hope this gives you an idea of what to go for if Mother Nature doesn't supply you with enough snow to satiate your Christmas Eve. Who knows, they may even help save Christmas!
Have fun and Merry Christmas!
