In an unexpected twist of fate, Netherrealm Studios has decided to bless us with a proper Mortal Kombat expansion pack! That's right: Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath is a few steps above a simple character pack, and we're excited to share all the information we have on this awesome release with you.
Here's a handy overview of all the info we have on Aftermath. Just click on the hyperlink and it'll take you to the relevant paragraph!
In short, Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath is a massive expansion pack for Netherrealm's latest MK offering, and it's a bit of a first for this developer and this franchise. Namely, Aftermath aims to deliver an expansion to the game's story! This will be the main draw of this DLC, but we'll also be getting new characters, skins, and arenas. All sorts of assorted content, really.
We're big fans of the recent Mortal Kombat titles, but we didn't expect to see an expansion pack at all. A new character pack, for sure, but more story? We're huge fans of that, in all honesty. Now, we know what you'll say: who in their right mind plays MK games for their narrative? We'll admit these titles are hardly the new War and Peace, but what they are is good fun!
Aftermath, in particular, aims to change the dynamic between core characters of the franchise. We're in for quite a curious ride, we think!
The Aftermath DLC will, as its name might suggest, continue the main story of Mortal Kombat 11. This isn't an alternative universe sort of thing, either, far as we can tell. Players will take up arms as Liu Kang after his Fire God ascension as the ultimate protector of Earthrealm. In his attempts to secure the long-lasting future of his realm, he's going to be forced to work alongside some of his most vicious enemies.
Shang Tsung himself will, it seems, come to the side of good for once, and help the young Fire God destroy this higher threat. Liu Kang's next adventure promises a return of certain franchise staples, as the player progresses through the story. We know for a fact that Dead Pool and Soul Chamber arenas will make a triumphant return, for example, and that their appearance will be grounded in the lore.
It's worth pointing out that new arenas and features, like the Friendship "finishers" will be making their way to the base game too, as free updates for everyone. It seems that purchasing Aftermath will be an option for those who want to play the new story, and use the three new characters! Before getting to new characters, though, let us explain the Aftermath pre-order content.
It's not unusual for major expansion packs to have their own pre-order content nowadays. Netherrealm has prepared one such option for Aftermath's early adopters.
Players who place a pre-order will be granted access to the three badass skins show above, the Eternal Klash Skin Pack. We've got Scorpion, Frost, and Sub-Zero in order of appearance. It's a pretty neat selection of skins all in all, and if you're into maining one of these characters, we think pre-ordering might not even be a bad idea!
Now, onto the meat of this expansion pack. Aftermath is going to introduce three awesome new characters to the Mortal Kombat 11 combat roster. Two of them are classic returnees from previous titles, while the third is a fan-favorite classic and an out-of-franchise appearance. That's right: Robocop is coming to Mortal Kombat 11!
The legendary cyborg police officer, Robocop, is the latest in the long line of fighters dropping by from other franchises. Following the Xenomorph, the Predator, Spawn, and a significant number of others, we've no doubt Netherrealm will make using Robocop feel just as badass as it needs to be.
Expect for Robocop to make good use of his numerous firearm gadgets, as we've already seen him burn his enemies alive with the flamethrower. The classic Auto 9 handgun will be available as well, which is to be expected. A slow, high-damage fighter, perhaps? Robocop has never been much for crazy physical stunts, though we're betting we'll see a skin from the recent remake, too.
One thing we're very excited about, though, is the fact that Peter Weller himself - from the original film - will reprise his role of Robocop for Aftermath. Some memorable lines await!
A classic Mortal Kombat fighter, Sheeva is a female Shokan with a particular penchant for viciousness. Expect the usual selection of stomp attacks, teleportation, and - of course - fireballs of all shapes and sizes. Sheeva is not an enemy you want to underestimate!
Fujin is the second legendary returnee combatant coming as part of Aftermath. Wind god and brother to Raiden himself, Fujin is a very capable fighter and one of the most proficient defenders of Earthrealm. Interestingly, he's going to be one of the characters to introduce the reformed Shang Tsung to Fire God, which means the story won't be as one-sided as some would expect.
We'll have more info on these combatants soon!
The Aftermath DLC is primed to launch on 26th of May, which is also when a major game update for Mortal Kombat 11 will hit. As we mentioned, even those who only own the base MK11 game will be granted access to some pretty exciting features: Netherrealm isn't locking major game improvements behind the expansion pack!
Mortal Kombat 11 Friendships are coming! These "finishers" will be an awesome boon for those who wish to either subvert their enemies' expectations or perhaps simply aren't pleased with ripping out spines and spilling out intestines. A franchise as long-lasting and varied as Mortal Kombat has a fair few weird bits surrounding its continued production. For example, after being heavily criticized for its excessively violent content, Mortal Kombat II introduced Friendships as finishing moves - to ape on its critics a bit.
These non-murderous finishers were included in mainline releases here and there, though Mortal Kombat 11 is the first modern MK game to have them. Best of all? They will not be exclusive to Aftermath! Friendship finishers will be introduced to all players as part of MK11's free content update on the 26th of May, so stay tuned.
If you'd like a tease on how these "killing" moves work, just scroll on down and watch a full-blown trailer featuring some of them!
For better or worse, there will be multiple pricing and purchase options for Aftermath! Expect a baseline model, an upgraded model featuring the first Kombat Pack, and a full Mortal Kombat 11 Kollection to pick from. Here's everything we know:
A bit complicated at first, but it's actually simpler than it might seem. Those who only want Aftermath should opt for the topmost purchase option. If you'd like the full experience, featuring the base game and the Kombat pack, the Kollection is the way to go. Finally, those who need both Aftermath and Kombat packs can choose the final, $50 option.
