Even with all the hype, Doom Eternal DLC news isn't exactly coming in fast and hard. There's been a lot of theorizing on what the game's expansion packs might entail, and the simple truth is that we don't have that much to go on.
However! We're sure there's heaps more info coming really, really soon, so we thought it might be wise to start setting up pages dealing with the topic of Doom Eternal DLC news specifically! What you're going to find below is a comprehensive collection of everything we know so far about upcoming Eternal content!
At the time of writing, we really do know precious little about the upcoming Doom Eternal DLC. We do know, however, that we've been wrong with our previous DLC theory - that we'll be leaving Slayer temporarily behind to explore other characters and stories. Our theory was that Id Software would use the expansion packs to put players in other characters' shoes. Perhaps those of a lowly grunt, or a scientist during the early stages of the demonic invasion.
According to the Steam listing of Eternal's Season Pass, Bethesda is taking the DLC in an entirely different direction: "Your victory over Hell’s armies pulled humanity back from the edge of extinction, but it came at a cost. An imbalance of power in the heavens requires the true ruler of this universe to rise and set things right."
If that wasn't enough of a hint, the initial pitch sure is: "The Slayer’s legend grows…"
Pretty chilling, and pretty darn badass, too, but that does leave us wondering what's up with the Betrayer and other NPCs that looked like there's way more to them than we first saw. Now, do keep in mind that the Steam page doesn't explicitly state anything about the scope of Eternal's future DLC. It may well be that we'll get both the Slayer and other playable characters in the future!
Yes! It's clear by now that Bethesda and Id won't settle for simple skirmish levels, far as DLC goes. With Khan Maykr dead, and the Icon of Sin almost entirely neutralized, humanity has a shot at surviving the horrors of the demonic invasion after all. However, a new being is now knocking at reality's door. It's only fair for Slayer to respond, his Super Shotgun at the ready.
"Wage war across never-before-seen realms of the DOOM Universe, fight against new demons, and wield new abilities in your never-ending battle against the forces of evil," says the Steam blurb. Indeed, we'll be getting fully-fledged mini-campaigns in the coming months, and a fair few of them, too.
According to the latest developments, there's going to be more than two campaign DLCs for Eternal! Those who've purchased the Deluxe Edition of the game will be given immediate access to the first two releases as they come out. However, the fact that there exists a Year One Pass tells us that Id and Bethesda aren't even close to being done with the game after that.
Hey, if that gets us more awesomeness out of Eternal, we're more than happy about this! Sure there are other games to play, but none with the pure, unfettered brutality that's on show in recent Doom titles. Speaking of brutality, if you haven't played Doom Eternal after finishing the main story, you may have missed a few rather important developments. Like the Mullet Slayer skin.
As the wide variety of skins available for Slayer had previously shown, Id Software and Bethesda aren't afraid of going crazy with their designs. Now, sure, the Unicorn skin was pretty friggin' wild, but how about the Doom Eternal Mullet Slayer, huh?
Indeed, it's not only major DLCs and expansion packs that are in production at Id. Awesome skins and other assorted cosmetics have been coming in fast and hard. Not to mention the first major content update for the game, which added Empowered Demons and the Precious Metals event. The list of single-player quality-of-life updates made us quite happy, too:
Neat, right? Sadly, this latest announcement didn't really add much information about the DLC release date, though that was to be expected anyway. We're to stay tuned until a later date. Naturally, we'll be on top of news as they come out, so check in once in a while!
Now, sure, we've been singing high-praise for Doom Eternal since it released, but you don't have to take our word for it! The recent Doom Eternal Accolades tailer might add more context to what we've been saying, in fact.
