What are the best Assassin's Creed PC games? Actually, let's one-up that question: what is the best Assassin's Creed on PC, specifically? This is a matter of some complexity and curiosity, to be sure! While we can't promise to offer a truly conclusive answer because games are, after all, pretty darn subjective, it's our goal for today to try and explain which Assassin's Creed games players might gravitate towards, and why. No small feat, but we're up for it!

Whether it's the Ezio Trilogy, the Chronicles titles, the Unity run, or even Ubisoft's newfangled Assassin's Creed RPG series, it matters little. We'll go over each of the franchise's eras to provide conclusive pros and cons, and also follow them up with links to each game! That way, you'll get the most information in the simplest format. Win-win, right?

In the very end, we've also got our own list of best Assassin's Creed games in the order of quality. Subjective stuff, for sure, but that's just how it goes with reviews! We'll grade the games based on their setting, general quality of gameplay, and (average) critical acclaim. That ought to cover the most ground without becoming overly complex, we think!

The Best Assassin's Creed PC Games:

The first Assassin's Creed game

The legendary release that started it all. It's hard to believe that Assassin's Creed first came out in 2007, a whopping 13 years ago! It goes without saying that this was practically a demo-run for the franchise. Conceptually, it's got all the makings of a modern AC game, but it's a bit rough around the edges. It's good, but far from the best. And that's okay, honestly! We do think the game is still worth replaying, even today, though finishing it is an entirely different matter.

Assassin's Creed II

Sure, Assassin's Creed II might only be the second entry in this long-lasting franchise, but make no mistake: it may very well be the best. It introduced almost too many gameplay elements to keep track of while still maintaining the core of what made its predecessor an AC game. Better still, it built upon its decidedly strong foundation and turned it into something truly game-changing. A classic, honestly, and a must-play no matter what your preferences might be!

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood iterated the gameplay...

A standalone expansion to Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood was remarkably similar to its progenitor in all the right ways. It did, however, innovate further. There was its incredible rendition of Rome and its surrounding areas, for starters, and the Assassins' brotherhood finally came into play in a way that made a difference. It was a great refresher, though it did start with the whole iteration-over-innovation issue that the franchise has historically struggled with.

...while Assassin's Creed Revelations brought the story home

The second standalone expansion to the second mainline game in the franchise, Assassin's Creed Revelations is near and dear to our heart. Its gameplay is a bit of a retread from its predecessors, but the innovations are just enough to keep you interested to the narrative's end. More important is the narrative itself, with the simultaneous wrap-up of the series' two monumental threads: those of Ezio and Altair. A great homecoming for all of the series major characters up until then, though it might get a bit overbearing if you play all the games back-to-back.

Assassin's Creed III changed things around big-time

Assassin's Creed III brought about some really major changes in how the series' core gameplay systems worked, mostly in regards to resource accretion and contract execution. Its fault was in narrative delivery, however, and whereas Revelations really left us impressed with what Ubi can do, III just wasn't up to par in this regard. It still plays phenomenally well, so it wasn't that big of a fault, at least! The change in setting was much appreciated as well, and the historical revisionism that the franchise is known for was nicely executed.

And Assassin's Creed: Liberation iterated upon these novelties!

Originally a dedicated PlayStation Vita release, Liberation may not have added much to III's central gameplay model, but it sure did polish things up a bit, as well as introducing an arguably more interesting protagonist to the mix. A few new weapons peppered throughout the game were enough to keep us interested, though it's definitely the story that you should be playing this game for!

Better still, though, was Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

very strong contender for the title of the best Assassin's Creed game, the Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag is nothing short of incredible. Its setting was a major departure for the franchise - 18th century Caribbean - and the dashing piracy theme was practically a slam-dunk for most fans. Sure, Edward Kenway might not be Ezio himself, but his character kept us entertained even through the Assassin's Creed IV's grindier sections.

Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry added a new narrative twist to IV

First described as 'inessential' by PC Gamer, Freedom Cry was regardless a fun twist on the core gameplay formula established by its parental release, the IV. Granted, if you play the two releases one after another, it's easy to see why Freedom Cry might feel more derivative than it otherwise would, but if you're yearning for more story and classic IV gameplay, well, this is your winner!

A bit more of North America in Assassin's Creed Rogue...

Assassin's Creed Rogue is a tough one. It was released practically as a just-in-case sort of thing at the turn of the console generation, alongside the far more well-know next-gen Unity, and it really fell through the cracks because of this. Rogue did a lot of things right, however. Its narrative was remarkably compelling - from a Templar's perspective. It also combined the best parts of III and IV to make for a game that's perfectly good in just about every way. Were we tired of this engine and its gameplay loop, though? Just a tiny bit.

Assassin's Creed Unity did not have a good launch, but Ubi turned things around!

Alright, look, we knowAssassin's Creed Unity launched in a bad, bad state, and it caught a whole heap of justifiable flack because of it. Beneath the infinitely memeable bugs and a severe lack of polish, though, was an incredibly compelling experience. In fact, in 2020, it's turned out to be our very favorite classic AC experience! Make no mistake, that's nothing to be scoffing at. Unity added more stealth to the core gameplay loop than ever, greatly improved on the series trademark mobility features, showed us one of the series' greatest cities ever, and stayed true to what an AC game really ought to be. Do yourself a favor and replay it with all the latest patches: you may very well be surprised by what you discover!

Assassin's Creed Chronicles were a major change of pace for the series, and fun!

It's important to keep in mind that Assassin's Creed Chronicles are not, in fact, a mainline release for the franchise. They're arguably closer to some of the many Android and iOS releases the series has had, but premium still. Featuring three standalone releases set in China, India, and Russia, Chronicles games are highly-stylized platformers that offer awesome new narratives to fans of the series. They're great in their own right, but don't expect a fully-fledged AC experience here.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is like Unity, but in London!

What can we say about Assassin's Creed Syndicate that hasn't already been said? This game is to Unity what Revelations was to AC II, honestly! It uses the central gameplay loop of its predecessor with various mobility and combat additions, alongside an entirely new - and delightful - setting to boot. It's pretty darn great, and it launched in a far better state than Unity did. If you're not too keen on the series' latest RPG twists and turns, Syndicate will be your best bet!

Assassin's Creed Origins was the biggest gameplay departure the series has yet had

With Assassin's Creed Origins, Ubisoft changed virtually everything about their flagship franchise. Now a fully-fledged action RPG, Origins offers all the amenities other modern role-playing games do, but with a setting we hadn't ever played in before: Ancient Egypt! Now, okay, not everyone will be a fan of these modern AC titles, but we sure are. A fantastical history action-RPG with a solid story and a likable protagonist? Sign us the hell up!

On the other hand, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is Origins, but in Ancient Greece

See a pattern in how Ubi makes AC titles yet? Assassin's Creed Odyssey does everything Origins does. Some things better, while others worse. It is best looked at as a sister-game to its predecessor, we feel! It goes without saying that Odyssey may well be the biggest AC title yet, with dozens upon dozens of hours of gameplay available in the base game. Then come the expansion packs and the open-world thingamajigs, and you're quickly over 100 hours in. All the same, Odyssey is phenomenal, even if slightly less charming than Origins first was.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Takes the RPG Formula Into The Nordics

In many ways, Valhalla is the logical evolution and possible conclusion of Ubisoft's RPGCreed series. Iterating upon both Origins and Odyssey in equal measure, the game takes its cues from some of Ubisoft's greatest productions of all time. It is, in more ways than one might think, one of the best ARPGs of all time. Sadly, it also takes a step back in some key areas that elevated its predecessors beyond mere ARPGs. Notably, both Odyssey and Valhalla have had more interesting settings and playable areas, giving them a bit of an edge compared to Valhalla.

So, what is the Best Assassin's Creed Game on PC?

Assassin's Creed Sale

The million-dollar question! Let us consult the scores we've awarded each game first:

Quite a hefty list, isn't it? Well, there are a lot of awesome Assassin's Creed games! Notice that these are all good games, however. Ubisoft is a triple-A studio, after all, and Assassin's Creed is nothing if not their prime flagship. It's only to be expected that even the franchise's very worst - far as mainline releases go - would still be pretty damn good.

By our scoring system, it turns out that Odyssey is the very best the franchise has to offer! However, if we're only looking at classic releases (before the RPG rebrand), Black Flag reigns supreme! Personally, though, we feel the award might go to Unity, because it just feels like a true Assassin's Creed through-and-through. So, here's what our awards boil down to!
