'The Most Feature-Rich a Street Fighter Has Ever Been'

"What really pushes Street Fighter 6 over the edge," said IGN's Mitchell Saltzman, "is how it completely nails virtually everything outside of its main modes that you could ask for in a fighting game."

Saltzman was thrilled about SF6's core gameplay loop, of course - the combat, as it were - but it is as we suspected, considering Capcom's pre-release materials: the meta-game is just phenomenal. There's so much to do and so much to have fun with. Not only are we looking at one of the most comprehensive and useful tutorial modes ever featured in a fighting game, but the same approach has been extended to every other area of gameplay, too.

We're looking at stellar netcode, modes both casual and competitive, and a truly innovative player on-boarding system. "Many fighting games also have these features, but very few have all of them, and especially not right out of the gate," concluded Saltzman. From everything we've seen so far, we're prone to agree!

'Social, Silly, Spectacular'

Eurogamer's Wesley Yin-Poole said that the game is "A fantastic package - perhaps the best Street Fighter's ever had."

Yin-Poole spoke at length about the game's impressive single-player campaign mode. According to him, we're looking at a "Yakuza-lite" 25-hour campaign mode where the players' custom avatar goes onto an adventure all of their own. "World Tour, then, is Street Fighter RPG, but it's also completely and utterly silly. You can beat people up - anyone, really, apart from kids - and everyone's well up for it," said Yin-Poole.

We'll be honest here: we did not expect a full-fledged third-person adventure mode. The World Tour mode was, at most, anticipated to be a wacky little side-story to play while the game rears you up for competitive combat. This, though, is absolutely amazing: "Nothing makes sense, everyone's up for a scrap, and Street Fighter 6 is having the time of its life."

'One of the Most Impressive Entries the Genre Has Seen'

"An abundance of inclusions demonstrates an impressive degree of polish," said Game Informer's Elijah Gonzalez. Gonzalez went into more detail about the game's long-awaited Drive System, which he felt "elegantly combines several mechanics like powered-up special attacks, cancels, and defensive maneuvers under a shared resource." Drive System, it's worth pointing out, is probably the biggest new combat mechanic, and we'd be remiss not to admit that we had some concerns about it going into the experience.

As you can probably conclude by now, though, any concerns we may have had are now gone: "The game’s pace feels more deliberate than Street Fighter V, creating rewarding back-and-forth exchanges allowing its more cerebral elements to shine," explained Gonzalez.

Oh, and on the topic of the game's relatively small character roster, Game Informer's review puts things into proper perspective: "The 18-character roster is also a slam dunk, combining returning favorites with cleverly designed newcomers to deliver a wide variety of playstyles and degrees of complexity. Each has a robust move set, and almost every fighter has a unique gimmick that can transform the match." In other words, Capcom's pulled off the perfect balance between novel and old against all odds.

A New Era Begins Indeed!

And there you have it - Capcom's done it again! Much could be said about the state of Street Fighter 5 on launch day, but everything points to the devs having learned their lessons last time. What we've got in front of is nothing short of monumental: a top-tier community-focused fighting game that revels in its competitive spirit.

It is a bit ridiculous though, isn't it? Capcom is easily one of the best contemporary game publishers as it stands. From one banger to another, the studio is firing on all cylinders, and the recent success of Resident Evil 4 was downright phenomenal, only for them to follow up on it with SF6, a terrific game in its own right. What comes next? Well, Dragon's Dogma 2, of course! And we really cannot wait.

Don't forget: 2Game's got Street Fighter 6 in stock at a discount: if you're an early bird, you can save a pretty penny and play the game day-and-date on June 2. Fighting game fans eating well nowadays, do they not?
