Looking for the best anime PC games? You've come to the right place! Anime video games are a dime a dozen nowadays, but separating the chaff from the wheat isn't quite as simple as it once might've been. If you'd like to play some absolutely top-tier JRPG and/or anime games, but don't actually know where to start and how to choose, you're at just the right place.
Indeed, we've already established our in-depth lists of the best PC RPGs and the ultimate single-player games list we offer here at 2Game, as well as going over a whole slew of phenomenal games that went under most gamers' respective radars. Today, we aim to do precisely the same with anime games, covering an extremely wide array of experiences that range from complex role-playing titles all the way to impeccably animated visual novels. A bit of something for everyone, in other words.
Something important we'd like to highlight before wading into the reeds proper is that the anime games listed below are set up in no particular order. If ordered entries are what you're after, we recommend checking out our yearly roundup of the top 100 PC games we sell here at 2Game. There, we rate them as one does. Here, it's all willy-nilly, and all the featured games are awesome in their own right and will differ from one reader to the other. So, just scroll ahead, see what you like the most, and have fun!
Featuring an incredible roster of over 100 playable characters in total, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is one of the most impressive anime games we've seen yet. It's got a solid narrative and an engaging progression loop, yes, but combat is the highlight here. There are layers upon layers to Hundred Heroes' combat systems, all of them interlocking to deliver one supremely satisfying turn-based role-playing game that we happily recommend this video game as one of the best anime games on the market!
An incredible 2D Metroidvania/Adventure sidescroller anime game, Afterimage is a hand-drawn delight that plays well on virtually anything you might install it onto, from the low-spec office rig to the Steam Deck. Afterimage plays really well, keeps you entertained with a solid narrative and characterization, and looks absolutely phenomenal at the same time. Do we recommend it as one of the best anime games? Oh, absolutely.
The ultimate up-to-date, high-definition version of the classic Etrian Odyssey franchise is here! With three full games' worth of content bundled into one immense package, the Etrian Odyssey Origin Collection gives you everything you need to fully immerse yourself into this beloved JRPG dungeon crawler (that now works on modern PCs).
What could possibly be said about the Persona 3 video game that hasn't already been said? In its Reload form, ATLUS' classic becomes the game you always remembered it to be, except now for real. Modern, up-to-date, but with all the goodies and content that made Persona 3 such a big deal. This is the one to play, for sure.
Whereas some anime games try their very best to steer clear of tired old genre tropes and fulfil established expectations, Tales of Arise is darn thrilled to do the opposite. This is precisely the game you expect it to be, from the gameplay to the narrative. Here's the thing, though: Tales of Arise does what it does incredibly well. If you want an awesome ARPG with a J inclination and little else, play this game.
Make no mistake, this is absolutely the ultimate version of Phoenix Wright on PC. With over two dozen episodes' worth of cases to solve and the classic Phoenix Wright stories to prop up the whole thing, we must say that we feel this is one of those Steam library must-haves even if you're not into JRPGs / anime games. It's that good.
Wrath of the White Witch is one of the best games of all time, let alone one of the best anime games/JRPG experiences on the market. This is essentially the Studio Ghibli RPG, and if that's something you ever dreamt of - which you ought to have - you're going to want to play it. Deep, immersive, and simply a delight no matter how you flip it, Ni No Kuni is a satisfying and heart-warming game that our recommendations cannot do justice for.
Into fighting games and anime? How about a Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z fighting game, specifically? Of course, we've had a fair few awesome Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z games on PC over the years, but... honestly, few of them reach the ridiculously stratospheric heights of the FighterZ fighting game. Look, Dragon Ball is all about demi-gods duking it out with their fists and feet, and Dragon Ball FighterZ lets you do ample amounts of that, with ample amounts of polish to boot. Go get it!
A JRPG vampire drama, character action game, and a Soulslike - of all things - in equal measure, Code Vein is a bit of an acquired taste. However, the quality of the game is positively stellar, and for a certain subset of players, there's nothing else quite like it.
Another Persona classic brought back into the modern limelight, Persona 5 Royal is a real must-have for fans of the franchise. Here's the kicker, though: Persona 5 Royal is easily the best franchise entry if you're a newcomer, too, which means it's just one of those things you ought to add to your Steam library sooner or later. Don't dawdle: P5R is worth the investment as one of the best anime games you can get.
An unexpectedly grim rendition of Digimon proper, Digimon Survive is a full-blooded visual novel and turn-based RPG combination the likes of which you just don't see all that often. Do not go into this game expecting a happy-go-lucky Pokemon-esque monster catcher. Instead, expect extremely engaging characterization, some difficult choices, and an ever-evolving narrative with many different endings to try and strive for. Good luck!
