Best PC horror games 2020! That's a tall order, we'll give you that. Then again, by the time you've scrolled on through our ultimate list for gaming Spooktober 2020, we think you'll agree with what we're saying here! The list of games you're about to see has been hand-crafted for one thing, and one thing only: to maximize the number of frights-per-second you can get during any given gaming session.
To that end, we've got an extremely wide array of niches and genres covered here. From vicious first-person shooters all the way to slow and contemplative Lovecraftian horror: we've got something for just about everyone on this list. Some entries you'll find befuddling, others perfectly natural. We can, however, promise that they all make sense in the context we're setting up here.
If you, too, are gearing up for the greatest Spooktober there ever was, join us as we present our ultimate list of the best PC horror games 2020!
GTFO is tense in the same way Aliens is tense. And, yeah, sure, we've got Giger's own monstrosities on this list, but none of the games featuring the infamous Xenomorph have managed to do what GTFO has done. This Early Access wunderkind is developed by some of the former Payday developers, which has come into play here, too, since GTFO is built around its 4-player co-op first and foremost.
The core of it is simple: four well-armed players descend into an unfathomably massive underground complex that is infested with - something. This something is disturbing in just the right way, and though we'll try not to spoil much in this article, we will say that GTFO riffs heavily on the trope of fridge horror. The premise is simple, yes, but the execution is downright phenomenal. Hell, GTFO even features Simon Viklund's soundtrack, which will be a huge plus for those who have had experience with him.
All of this combines to make GTFO an absolute horror blast if you're looking for a new horror co-op experience.

One of the greatest immersive sims ever made, PREY is also a phenomenal horror game. Really, it's a thinker's horror. Some will find this not to be all that appealing because you technically can sidetrack most of the game's threats. We, however, feel that this is what makes PREY special. It lets the player tackle things just the way they want to, and let's be honest here: we all mess up from time to time. Our advice for PREY would be to avoid any and all guides you might be tempted to google for. Just let them be, and play the game at your own pace.
The game will test your inventiveness constantly. It will also tear down expectations left and right, while humanoid Typhon and their creepily sneaky Mimic brethren serve as a more direct threat in the moment-to-moment gameplay. PREY offers something truly unique, especially if you consider its Mooncrash DLC, too. For fans of sci-fi horror, PREY cannot be skipped over!
Get PREY right now and play it today!
As we said - some of the games on this list you'll immediately agree with. Others, not so much. Fade to Silence is definitely not a great game, but we found it to be charming in the same way many AA games of yesteryear were, back in the day.
Technically, Fade to Silence is a horror survival game, albeit way more focused than you might first imagine. It's rather short, but it offers a combo-threat of freezing temperatures and an apocalypse brought about by cosmic horrors. Players basically need to juggle between these two while still trying not to succumb to the infection that's threatening to turn them, too, into an incomprehensible monstrosity. It's fun! Janky, sure, but fun. We do recommend it, especially if you first ignored it due to its mixed reviews on Steam. Just... y'know, bear in mind that this isn't your average triple-A horror game, but rather something a bit humbler and smaller in scope.
Play Fade to Silence right now - with a discount!
There have been so, so many attempts at making another genuinely good Call of Cthulhu game over the years, but they've all fallen short for this reason or the other. Dark Corners of the Earth reigns supreme still, and for a variety of reasons, too. For example, it's insanely varied in content.
Many people laud Dark Corners' early chase sequence, for example, but did you know that, later on, you'll get to visit the legendary Mi-Go, too? You'll also fight off a genuine Star-Spawn of Cthulhu, as well as temporarily defeat the avatar of Dagon with the help of an actual battleship cannon. Somewhere along the way, you'll get kidnapped by an early version of the FBI to help them raid a "mafia" safehouse, all the while your visions of something make things even harder for you. All of this barely scratches the surface of what you'll find playing this game. Dark Corners of the Earth is a truly wonderful experience and one of the most atmospheric titles you could play today.
It's janky, of course, but also is very well worth the trouble. Consider it a must-play if you've got even a passing interest in true Lovecraftian horror, Deep Ones, and all that shiz.
See what makes Dark Corners of the Earth a classic horror experience for yourself!
It goes without saying that Bioshock: The Collection is a classic. Some will prefer the first game, while others might opt for Bioshock 2 or even Infinite as their respective favorites. What cannot be contested, however, is that Ken Levine's magnum opus is a genuine masterpiece.
The Bioshock series tackled subjects that had previously been unheard of in video games, and in a way that made them all the punchier when things finally do unravel properly. We would argue that Bioshock titles aren't actually immersive sims due to the simplicity of their combat gameplay loop. That doesn't mean they're not worthy of your time and effort, however. This goes doubly so in Spooktober, because even the sun-drenched Infinite is a right and proper horror when push comes to shove.
Play Bioshock: The Collection this October and see what all the hubbub is about!
This entry is going to get contested heavily, we know. While just about everyone agrees that the first First Encounter Assault Recon game is nothing short of a genre-defining classic, its respective successors weren't all that well-received. We do, however, enjoy them! Each F.E.A.R. game does something different and for all the strange narrative developments that end up becoming relevant by the end of it all, the experience ends up making a surprising amount of sense. If you let it, of course.
F.E.A.R. is incredibly disturbing, too. From your very first encounter with the infamous Paxton Fettel and his... interesting way of acquiring memories, all the way to the horrific realization of what really happened to Project Origin's protagonist, the story never really lets up. It's horrific, is what it is, and if you want some of that deep horror, but also phenomenal FPS gameplay, the F.E.A.R. games are your best bet.
Ramp up Spooktober with the F.E.A.R. franchise: DLC included!
The Dark Pictures Anthology is unique on this list in that it's as close to an interactive horror movie as it gets in 2020. The series is under active development by the folks who made Until Dawn, so you know it's some quality stuff. So far, we've had the chance to play Man of Medan, and the next entry (which, by the way, is not directly connected to Man of Medan) is Little Hope, coming out on October 30th. Talk about great timing, huh?
Of particular interest is Dark Pictures' multiplayer functionality. The game supports and even encourages every person to control a different character. This, of course, leads to some really unpredictable situations. Half the fun, really.
It's worth pointing out that The Dark Pictures Anthology is classic horror, without much in the way of cosmic or Weird elements included. If you'd like a purebred ghost scare, this is the game to grab.
Check out the Dark Pictures Anthology here at 2Game, discounts and all!
Resident Evil Remake titles are amazing. Now, sure, RE3R did underperform compared to RE2R, but that's only because the remake of the second game was a downright incredible experience that won't easily be toppled anytime soon. Regardless! We found ourselves enjoying RE3R all the same, and we firmly believe that both of the modern Remakes are absolutely must-play experiences for fans of the franchise.
Newcomers, on the other hand, can use these games as the perfect entry into this overly convoluted series. The new games are fast, fun, and streamlined to the point of perfection. They're also not that big of a time investment, making them just the right choice for those of us who can't game all weekend long.
We're still waiting for more information on Resident Evil: Village, but in the meantime, we're more than happy to give the Remakes another fair shake this Spooktober.
Play the Modern Remakes of Classic Resident Evil games this October!
Alien: Isolation is a masterpiece. It's a really simple statement and a true one at that. Its atmosphere is unparalleled. Its main antagonist - the friggin' Xenomorph - cannot be topped. The ultimate wombo-combo for good horror! The game's unique AI programming allows the phallic monstrosity to hunt for the player in ways no other game has prepared you for. The game is so unnerving, in fact, that it feels like the Xeno might leap out from the shadows even before it spawns into the level. Incredible!
Fair warning, though: Isolation is a long game. It's going to take you a fair bit to complete its main campaign, and then, on top of that, there's plenty of bonus DLC to have fun with. The one we'd like to point out is Crew Expendable, which replays the events of the first Alien movie. How about that? Replay the Alien movie itself this Spooktober for the scares of your life.
Face the deadliest life-form in the universe in Alien: Isolation!
You might be surprised to see DOOM 64 on this list, but it really does make the most amount of sense. Doom 3 is cool and all, but we've got atmospheric realistic-ish shooters on this list already. Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are awesome, but they're reverse-horror games. After all, nothing is scarier than Doom Slayer in those games.
DOOM 64, however, is the creepiest and most difficult of all classic DOOM games. It's dark, it's grim, and it's tough as nails at times. There's nothing even remotely close to it on this list, and that's precisely what makes it a worthwhile addition to your game library this Spooktober.
Play the best classic DOOM game today! Cheap as chips, no joke.
Typing of the Dead: Overkill is probably the most unique game on our list of best PC horror games 2020. It's a totally insane combination of typist training software, Romero-tier horror schlock, and gunplay. Weirdest of all? It works! You get to reach hacker-levels of keyboard typing speeds all the while destroying zombies left and right. The narrative is... questionable. It is, however, horror, so it counts for our Spooktober festivities.
Overkill is out-of-date, sure, but it's yet to be replaced with a better product. If you can handle bad graphics and would love to see how a lightgun shooter plays when it's really optimized for PC hardware, here's your chance.
A fair word of warning, though: this version of Typing of the Dead is pretty disturbing at times. We're not talking F.E.A.R. levels of disturbing, really, but we'd advise you not to eat while you're playing this game. Then again, much the same can be said for the rest of the list, right?
Type the undead back into their graves with Typing of the Dead: Overkill today!
The Evil Within games are penned be Shinji Mikami himself, the original talent behind Resident Evil. In more ways than one, they are Resident Evil on steroids, and though they do get a bit self-indulgent at times, we love them to bits.
What you're getting here is nothing short of a horror epic. We're not joking: there's a ridiculous amount of content between the two Evil Within titles. Add optional narrative DLC to the mix, and you've got more than plenty to keep you busy all Spooktober long.
It's worth pointing out that The Evil Within might feel like it's dragging on too long for some. If it manages to pull you in as it did with us, however, you're in for something really special. Definitely worth a shot, we think!

Some games wear their Lovecraft / Cosmic horror badge on the sleeve. For better or worse, however, Conarium does the opposite. This first-person survival horror game went under our radar for a long while until we finally caught wind of what it really was earlier this year.
For all intents and purposes, Conarium is an unofficial continuation of Lovecraft's own 'At the Mountains of Madness' story. Know what the weirdest part is? It works well enough. Players take control over Frank Gilman, who is beset by strange visions after interacting with a - you've guessed it - queer artifact of alien nature. Set in Antarctica, Conarium offers an ominous story that every fan of Cosmic horror and Lovecraft specifically ought to acquaint themselves with.
We were very nicely surprised by what Conarium had to offer, and we think you might be, too. Spook season is here, right?

Little Nightmares: Complete Edition is precisely what it says on the tin. An ultimate interactive rendition of all of the worst childhood nightmares that have plagued us all, this way or the other. You get to take control over an essentially helpless kiddo as they come face-to-face with horrors beyond any common sensibility.
We'll be the first to admit that Little Nightmares isn't a typical horror game. It is, however, fairly scary, and very unsettling at times. We found that it taps into one's childhood fears very effectively. In fact, we'd even go so far as to mention it as a must-play, but we feel your mileage may vary, depending on how you feel about side-scrolling adventures in general.
In our book, though, Little Nightmares: Complete Edition is sitting right there with the best in the genre! Even if it is a bit unique in how it handles its frights.
Face the fears from your childhood today with Little Nightmares: Complete Edition!
Control is nothing short of a champion of New Weird in the video game arena. Coincidentally, this means it flirts with horror more often than not. For most of Jesse's adventure in the Old House, things are "merely" strangle and unsettling, but there are deeply troubling moments of sheer horror, too. Especially in the game's second expansion, AWE.
For those who've had experience with the popular Secure, Contain, Protect series of web-texts, Control is basically that. Far more cohesive and sensible, however. It is also Twin Peaks brought to life, which is something that Remedy Entertainment is well-known for at this point. Credit where credit is due, however, we do believe that Control is a horror game if you peel back its core elements. It's just that it's far stranger than most other games on this list, and it's not afraid of dedicating itself to the literary genre of New Weird.
To that - we say 'finally'. If you haven't yet played it, Control is hands-down one of the best games release this year. Spooktober or no Spooktober, everyone should give it a fair chance sooner, rather than later.
Enter the Old House and pull back the curtains in Control: Ultimate Edition - discounted here at 2Game!
That about does it for our ultimate list of best PC horror games 2020. You may disagree on the fundamentals of some of our picks, for sure, but we think we've provided phenomenal choices across the gaming spectrum. Really, no matter what your preferences might be, chances are there's something up there you'll be interested in. After all, Spooktober is well under-way, and it is horror o'clock all month long, far as we're concerned.
If you're not big on horror, though, perhaps you're keen on finding out the most exciting information we have about Watch Dogs: Legion? Alternatively, we've also been covering the upcoming LEGO: The Skywalker Saga release, and we're very excited to see what TT Games has come up with for their next blockbuster.
