Black Myth: Wukong is rampaging across the Steam Charts left and right, and we're all discovering its many, many secrets as we go. While there's much we haven't yet figured out, transformations are - thankfully - one of the first major skills you gain access to in this game. This is good news for a very simple reason: they are fun.

The thing about Wukong's transformations, though, is that they're separated into several different categories that aren't outright spelled out to the player early on. This may lead to confusion as some of them are available willy-nilly while others are either time-gated or stuck behind specific gameplay sequences. Down below, we'll explain our findings and help you make sense of what's what!

How to Transform in Black Myth: Wukong?

Sadly, not every enemy you beat in Black Myth: Wukong ends up being available as a transformation in the end. With how mysterious Game Science has been about Wukong ahead of its release, some ended up believing that each enemy in the game (or the bosses, at least) would be accessible as an optional transformation in and out of combat for Sun Wukong and the Destined One. This isn't true, however, and the game makes a distinction of several different Yaoguai transformation modes in practice.

More on that below, however, as the crux of the matter is that you transform into specific creatures in combat by holding the right trigger on your controller and choosing the form you want to use. Early on, you'll only have access to one or two, but this quickly ramps up to eight unique controllable avatars (or, at least, that's how many we've seen so far!):

Each of these avatar states come with their own moveset and abilities, making them absolutely indispensable as you come across more and more diverse combat scenarios. Now, onto the nitty-gritty of Wukong's transformation mechanics...

Two types of transformations are available for Wukong to use in combat

You'll be able to fully control any of the eight avatar states in and out of combat as soon as you unlock them, however there's a huge roster of additional one-off transformations that the Destined One also has access to by hitting the left and right triggers at the same time.

These are unlocked by defeating minor Yaoguai and equipping them using the 'Spirits' menu in the Shrine UI. Spirit drops are easily spotted by looking for large blue flame wisps floating around after a boss is defeated, and you can have up to two of these equipped at a time.

There are too many Spirit Transformations available in Wukong: Black Myth to keep track of at this time, but some of the early examples include the Wandering Wight, Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang frog-monster, and Guangmou, and they'll be extremely helpful as a way of rounding off your build's weaknesses in combat.

How to turn into the Golden Cicada again?

Now, setting aside Avatar and Spirit Transformations for a bit, you will notice early on that certain sequences allow you to equip otherwise inaccessible forms, such as the stealthy Golden Cicada. These are either temporary narrative elements or late-game unlocks we haven't been able to reach just yet. Regardless of which of these options it is, you cannot turn back into the Golden Cicada after you first gain control of it.

We'll update this guide as we learn more about the game, so stay tuned!
