Borderlands 3 content in 2021 will, far as we can tell, not follow the tenets put in place by the game's first Season Pass. As you're probably aware, Season Pass 1 was a pretty darn massive endeavour, featuring four major campaign DLCs with all-new locations, enemies, loot, and stories each. Seriously, we're not kidding: the game easily doubles in size with Season Pass 1. Then, Gearbox announced that there'd be a Season Pass 2 as well! Those who fell in love with Borderlands 3 rejoiced at the idea of more mini-campaigns, of course. This joy was short-lived, however. Season Pass 2 was bound to be something else entirely...
That's pretty much where we're at right now. 2021 is ramping up, and we're mostly left to wonder what Gearbox is working on. In fact, we're wondering if they're working on extra content at all, or if they had already moved on to, well, Borderlands 4, we suppose. We could compare DLCs between games all we wanted, but considering how strangely erratic the DLC schedule for Borderlands 2 was, we don't think there's merit in that. Hell, just compare the two Season Pass offerings Borderlands 3 got! They're completely different in format. And pricing, too, for that matter.
With Season Pass 2's touted 'Director's Cut' content still yet to launch, we thought we'd offer a comprehensive overview of all the leaks, rumors, and theories we've seen about Borderlands 3 content in 2021 so far. Naturally, we'll focus mostly on that information which has some backing to it. To that end, below you'll find a few Tweets from Randy Pitchford of Gearbox fame, a few official announcements, and even a major leak to begin with. Exciting stuff!
It's official information that Season Pass 2 will be the highlight of Borderlands 3 2021. At least for the first part of the year. Its first half - cosmetics-focused Designer's Cut - is already out. On the other hand, its more interesting Director's Cut is coming a bit down the line. Up until now, we've had just about no idea what it might entail. However, we did come across a veritable leak from the game's official website. For better or for worse, we now have a way better sense of what's coming. If you were hoping for something up-to-par with Season 1 releases, we reckon you might be disappointed.
According to the aforementioned leak, we're looking at more Borderlands 3 for sure, but not too much of it:
Now, it's worth pointing out that this pertains to the "Ultimate Edition" of Borderlands 3. Presumably, that does include Season Pass 2, but we'll know for sure when official announcements come out. Could this spell the end of post-launch support for Borderlands 3? Not to be all doomy and gloomy, but it does sound like that to us. Of course, those who aren't looking for a live experience will be happy for the game to wrap up and be accessible whenever, without the promise of "more". And there might be more content coming further down the line. Borderlands 2 did have a pretty ridiculous schedule, after all.
Another important bit we ought to keep in mind are Randy Pitchford's Tweets. No, not in general, but this one does stand out. After Pitchford provided a general overview of all the stuff that's come out for Borderlands 3, a Twitter user commented with "All that and still no raid bosses," which is a fair point, to be sure. Pitchford retorted: "The game already includes multiple "Take-Downs" which is a meatier take on that idea. That said, stay tuned for more news soon that I think will make you happy 🙂"
Now, this could be taken in many different ways, but there's definitely stuff coming that might not have necessarily been announced yet. Either that, or, Ava's "Murder Mystery" will lead to planetary raid bosses, which would actually be pretty darn awesome, now that we think of it. For what it's worth, we did enjoy Takedowns, it's just that there weren't all that many of them. We'd pay good money for a Takedown-focused DLC, but we're not holding our proverbial breath.
While most of the cross-platform crossplay suggestions for Borderland 3 pre-launch were non-commital, a more recent announcement confirmed that - yes - this is coming. Not cross PC-platform, mind, but rather between consoles and PC itself, which is precisely the kind of crossplay Borderlands 3 would benefit the most from. Since Gearbox and 2K have been mum about this since, however, we're left to wonder when is Borderlands 3 crossplay coming? Presumably during 2021, for sure, but we'll have to get back to you on the specifics so stay tuned.
Though not the most exciting of news, we do still need to keep in mind that Seasonal Events will undoubtedly circle around to reappear in 2021, too. The Revenge of the Cartels was, for example, a massive success in our book, and though we don't actually necessarily expect any new content, it's a fun bit of stuff to do while it's live. Of course, it sure would be nice to make it accessible year-round, but oh well. In case you've not been keeping track, we expect the following events to make an appearance far as Borderlands 3 content in 2021 goes:
These were also underscored with Loot Drop events, which focused more on offering pinpoint locations with vastly improved drop quality and combat efficacy. Then there's your usual batch of seasonal cosmetic drops - for Christmas, as an example. We anticipate for there to be a fair few of those things, too. In case genuinely new stuff appears, rest assured that we'll be right on top of that.
We understand that some of you may have been hoping for... well, more. As it stands, there's just no information out there that would let us assume that we'll get another Season Pass 1 content drop for Borderlands 3. Having said that, the game is substantially larger than most other similar titles on the market. Even the base game alone will take you dozens of hours to complete, and that's without going into the rabbit hole that's endgame grinding and loot chasing. Add DLCs on top of that, the special New Game + modes, 4 unique playable characters, and you get quite a game in the end.
