Could This Be The Best Sonic Game Yet? Here’s What The Critics Say!

It's been a rather long wait overall, but Sonic Frontiers is finally available on PC! SEGA's seminal attempt at re-inventing the legendary blue hedgehog is at it again, and the good news is that this very well appears to be the best Sonic game yet! At least, as far as 3D titles are concerned, but that's really the most important consideration for the time being.

After all, with titles such as Mania and Origins Collection out and about, retro fans of Sonic do have plenty to play around with. Those who'd have preferred a more modern approach didn't really have much to show for over the past decade or so, and SEGA has stepped up to the task with Frontiers.

Don't believe us? You don't have to! We've been reading game reviews all day long, and the good news is that Frontiers really is a great game. It's not perfect, of course, but it's everything we had hoped it would be - and then some. With this article, we'll go over some of the most important reviews and help you decide if Sonic Frontiers is the right choice for you, too!

Is Sonic Frontiers the Best Sonic Game Yet?

First things first, it's important to state the obvious: Sonic as a franchise is immensely widespread and uniquely appealing to a huge array of different player types. Since SEGA serves such a huge audience, it's just about impossible that any new given piece of Sonic media will appeal to all of them. It's simply not happening. During the preview period for Sonic Frontiers, it became clear to the team here at 2Game that SEGA was going forward with a new vision for what makes a game about Sonic, and this necessarily meant that some of the classic fans might not immediately find themselves at home with Frontiers.

This, sadly, is the price of progress. We're not going to say that Sonic Frontiers is going to be everyone's cup of tea, then. We will, however, say that it's a phenomenal game. One that's certainly looking for a new identity, but that boldly moves forward in a new and exciting direction. If you're a generalist fan of Sonic, this is awesome news. If you're keener on games such as Mania, it's going to be a tough call.

Before we go over some specific reviews and critical takes, it's immediately worth pointing out that Sonic Frontiers is currently enjoying a 'Very Positive' review rating on Steam. Players say that it's an "amazing" game with oodles of content - both featuring action and mobility puzzles and/or adventuring. The general consensus is simple: this is the best Sonic game we've seen in 3D so far, and SEGA has hit a home run with this new direction for the ubiquitous hedgehog.

What Makes Sonic Frontiers so Good?

"I was admittedly skeptical," said Attack of the Fanboy's Elliott Gatica, referencing SEGA's initial reveal of this brave new open-world Sonic game. He explained that "[he] was a non-believer. [he] thought this game would fall flat, be lifeless, and be another entry that followed the overdone open-world formula that we have seen in the past decade." It's not a huge stretch to say that Gatica's thoughts mirror those of many Sonic fans. However! Gatica continues by saying that "Sonic Team really nailed what makes a Sonic game great and true to the franchise. It’s about good platforming; it’s about engaging gameplay. Most importantly, it’s about going fast."

In short, SEGA's risky gambit has paid off! But AOTF aren't the only ones enjoying the game, fret not.

Morgan Shaver of Shacknews had similarly high praise for Frontiers. "Sonic Frontiers is nothing short of a marvel," she said. "The gameplay in Sonic Frontiers is so strong and addictive that it often overshadows its story, which feels like much of what you’d expect to find in a Sonic game. It’s neither groundbreaking nor terrible, instead falling somewhere in the middle." Fair, we say! Gameplay is certainly king in Sonic games, and we can't fault SEGA for focusing on the important bits.

Dualshockers, too, had a similarly glowing review. Dean James said that "Sonic Team has never been afraid to take risks and Sonic Frontiers is a good example of one that has paid off." In his review, James said that Frontiers' open-world gameplay loop could very well be the foundation for something "for the series to build on in years to come," which mirrors our own take on the game.

In summary, a very strong new chapter of Sonic. A must-play, even!

The Start of a New Era for Sonic?

Most critics do agree, however, that the game ends up being somewhat repetitive in the end. This, most players will agree, is the common fault of almost every modern open-world game, and it was to be expected that Frontiers, too, would have some issues in this respect. Strong gameplay, however, carries the game through its rougher patches, and from our experience, Sonic fans are going to have a hoot with this one.

You do need to keep an open mind and set some expectations aside, for sure, but if this is the direction SEGA is taking Sonic in, we absolutely, positively cannot wait to see more of it. In conclusion: Sonic Frontiers is plenty awesome, and it serves up a crucial new stage for future Sonic titles to build upon!

Will You Play Sonic Frontiers on PC?

By now, you should have a pretty solid idea of what Frontiers is and what it isn't! Whether you're in the market for a super-fast open-world exploration game or not, it's hard to deny the fact that SEGA has pulled off something very noteworthy with Frontiers, and that it's a phenomenal sign for what's to come for the franchise.

This is easily the best 3D Sonic game we've had yet, and the blue blur can only get better from this point on. There's lots of fun stuff to do in the game, and the fact that players are already giving it high grades on Steam underlines the critics' understanding of its premise. Overall, it's not a total and absolute triumph, but it's a stellar first foray into open-world adventuring for Sonic and his pals, and we can't wait to see what else the franchise has in store for us.
