Gaming Industry Trends: Mobile Gaming and Beyond

When looking at gaming industry trends, you can't ignore the rise in mobile gaming. Providing immersive entertainment on-the-go, and bringing excitement to otherwise mundane commutes, the ever-evolving landscape of the increasingly accessible mobile gaming industry is taking the gaming world by storm. Indeed, in 2022, mobile gaming accounted for almost three-quarters of digital gaming revenues, with the popularity of the industry continuing to surge (Statista, June 2023).

But what does this growth in the mobile gaming industry mean for PC gaming? Is mobile gaming a threat to the PC gaming industry? Or, can the two niches coexist and complement one another? As a community that has primarily focused on premiere-tier PC gaming, these are interesting questions for us at 2Game, especially as we launch our sales of top-ups and gift cards for mobile games this upcoming September!

Blacktail PC Giveaway: Final Pic

OK, so I know this is an unorthodox way to begin an article, to basically start with the conclusion! But how could we believe there's any real conflict here? We're gamers, after all, the more good-quality gaming, the better!

I mean, it's pretty clear that nothing compares to the depth of gameplay offered by premier-tier PC gaming. However, mobile gaming serves a different purpose, and they complement each other nicely.

For example, you'll need to hit the pause button on Hogwarts Legacy or Elden Ring to leave your home at some point, right? And let's face it, getting on to your smartphone or tablet and figuring out 'who done it' in Among Us will be a much more entertaining way to pass the time in the Dentist's waiting room than flicking through one of those tatty magazines.

However, great as mobile gaming is when you're out and about, you know that as soon as you get home, you'll be diving right back into Atomic Heart!

And that's the beauty of the gaming industry. Trends that lead to an increase in gaming are good for gamers, and the more diversity the better!

Gaming Industry Trends - The Rise in Mobile Gaming

Having put our cards on the table, let's take a look at some of the factors behind the rise in mobile gaming, and what this emerging gaming industry trend has to offer.

The most obvious fuel to the rise in mobile gaming is the increasing affordability and accessibility of smartphones and tablets. That's to say, the more people who own the necessary technology, the greater the potential customer base will be.

Add to this, significant improvements in hardware; increased access to 4G and 5G networks; the advent of cloud gaming; the convenience of app stores; and the evolution of mobile payment systems, and you're left with pretty ideal conditions for an emerging mobile gaming industry.

What Does the Mobile Gaming Industry Have to Offer?

The gaming industry trend of mobile gaming has revolutionized our journeys. Woohoo! Gone are the days of sitting bored and restless, staring at your watch as your bus is stuck in traffic. I mean, why twiddle your thumbs when you could be smashing your friends in a bit of competitive Candy Crush Saga, or immersing yourself in your own virtual Roblox world?

Listen, I won't go as far as to suggest you purposefully pick that longer commute to give yourself a bit more time collecting weapons in Attack Hole. Or, that you 'accidentally' stay on the train a few stops too long in order to get your menu just right in Cat Snack Bar. But with such a variety of games on offer, mobile gaming certainly helps you make the most of your travel!

Premiere-Tier PC Gaming at Home

I'm not going to lie. I love a bit of mobile gaming. I mean, who doesn't? There's so much to choose from and it beats staring at the head of the passenger in front of you on that long and tedious journey to work.

Indeed, the more gaming industry trends point toward an increase in games, the happier I am. Whether that's mobile games or more premiere-tiered PC titles. I can't see any conflict.

I mean, I will happily solve puzzles in Royal Match on my phone for hours on end if given half the chance. As soon as I'm home, however, I'm getting back to Resident Evil 4 Remake. I've got a sinister conspiracy to uncover and a President's daughter to rescue, after all!
