How Big is Elden Ring? Here’s the Elden Ring Map Size!

With the release of the epic Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, all eyes are back on Elden Ring.

This makes sense considering that, although you may not have to complete the base game fully to access the crazily difficult DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree is an end-game expansion and players must defeat two major bosses to enter the new land. Easier said than done, I must say!

As many of us re-immerse ourselves in The Lands Between, in preparation for Shadow of the Erdtree, questions re-surface such as: How big is Elden Ring? And what exactly is the Elden Ring map size? Well, that's where we come in!

We hope you find this article about the scale of the base game useful, and good luck!

What is the Elden Ring Map Size?

The total explored Elden Ring map size is 79 km² or 30.5 square miles. To put that into perspective, this is bigger than the maps of Skyrim and GTA V (shock horror!) However, it isn't as big as Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The relatively modest map size of Elden Ring may surprise some considering the sheer amount of content the game offers. That is to say, the map size may be smaller than some other open-world games, but the density of its gameplay is amongst the highest in the genre.

How long does it take to complete Elden Ring?

It takes the average gamer roughly 50 hours to complete the Elden Ring main campaign, as long as s/he doesn't engage with side quests or optional bosses. However, for players who explore more of the world, complete side quests, and engage with some of the optional bosses and areas, it's more like 60 - 80 hours.

Further still, for a completionist playthrough in which you explore every nook and cranny, defeat all optional bosses, find all hidden secrets, and fully experience everything the game has to offer, we're talking more like 100 hours plus. Indeed, for the gamer DaemonXHUN, it took 130 hours to complete the base game 100%.

What is the Elden Ring download size?

The other stand out stat when it comes to the Elden Ring map size, is its comparatively reasonable download size.

Indeed, despite the huge scale of the game, the download size of Elden Ring is a mere 60 GB. Compare this to Assassin's Creed Valhalla which requires 78GB of free storage space, even after the update to reduce its install size, and it's hard not to be impressed. Especially considering that, depending on how you qualify original content, the Elden Ring world is potentially several times as substantial as that of Valhalla.

Elden Ring's relatively low download size is testament to the efficient optimization techniques employed by FromSoftware and their use of advanced game development technologies, which ensure players experience a rich, detailed world without requiring excessively large amounts of storage space. Hats off to them!

A lot of game for a modest amount of storage space!

To sum up, the Elden Ring map size is big in all the ways that matter. It's incredibly dense when it comes to content, yet relatively small when it comes to download size. What more could you ask for from a game?
