Cities Skylines 2 Leak!

A Cities Skylines 2 leak regarding any upcoming release may not have been on our radar just a few months back, but recent developments have made the topic far, far more interesting to us. That is, it's specifically the lack of recent developments in terms of announcements that have made us intrigued. The prospect is simple: game sequels are a concept as old as the medium itself, and though we're waiting for Pong 2 still, a Cities Skylines 2 release date might not be as far-fetched an idea as it first might seem!

Granted, you'll have to bear with us, because nothing's been set in stone yet. In fact, there's been no announcement whatsoever at the time of writing. The thing is, we've got a feeling big things are ahead for Colossal Order and the greatest city-builder ever made. Even if that might mean moving the production onto a fully-fledged city builder sequel!

UPDATE: Cities: Skylines 2 is Confirmed and Coming!

Everyone and their mum knows by now: Colossal Order is officially working on Cities: Skylines 2, and we're already kickstarting our content plan for the game! With that in mind, we thought this old article might be an interesting curiosity to keep around in its given state, so be sure to give it a read. Who knows - maybe the 2Game editorial team got even more stuff right about the upcoming city builder? Have fun!

Why do we think a Cities Skylines 2 leak is on the horizon?

cities skylines 2

There are two main points to this argument! First is that it's been quite a while since the first game launched. For those who've not been keeping count, the original Cities: Skylines took the world by storm in 2015! Since then, the developers - Colossal Order - have been hard at work improving their already phenomenal product and releasing all sorts of expansion packs for it. Five years is a rather long time, and there's a good chance they've been working on something really major in the background for the better portion of it. A massive DLC, perhaps adding more map tiles to be used in a single city, with more options for unique buildings, and the ability to follow a citizen's lifepath from childhood to old age? But it could also be Cities: Skylines 2, for all we know!

The second portion of the argument relies partially on the first. Namely, having taken a look at Cities: Skylines' DLC release schedule, it seems we're coming up short for the ongoing period. This isn't a new analysis, either. The community noticed the discrepancy a few months back, and the devs haven't had a major announcement since. What did happen, though, was that we got a big Humble Bundle focusing specifically on Skylines.

Now, it should be mentioned that this is all conjecture, honestly. Colossal Order may simply be getting ready to wrap things up with Cities: Skylines. After all, the original game has far outgrown what the devs ever expected it to be. This is no small feat, and we could hardly blame the devs for wanting to move on. Is this really the case, though? Let's circle back to the DLCs once more!

Is Cities: Skylines 2 being made?

cities skylines 2

Only Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive could provide a concrete answer to this question, but if you'd bear with us for a little while longer, we think we have a pretty compelling case here! As we said, the DLC release schedule is fairly important for this part, so let's analyze it a bit.

As you can see below, Cities: Skylines has had a fairly consistent DLC schedule over the years! Here's the full list of every major piece of content we got so far.

2015 - 1 DLC

2016 - 3 DLCs

2017 - 4 DLCs

2018 - 2 DLCs

2019 - 1 DLC

2020 - 1 DLC?

Naturally, there's a fair bit of time left in 2020, but a few things stand out to us. First is the odd fact that there was only one major DLC in 2019. Second is that there's been no concrete announcement for any additional information about Colossal Order's plans for the rest of 2020. If you look at things from this perspective, it may well seem like the devs have been focusing their efforts elsewhere.

We're not saying you should take this as fact, mind. We're merely throwing out there the idea of there being a Cities: Skylines 2 in production. This, of course, begs the following question!

What could Cities: Skylines 2 improve?

This is the million-dollar question, isn't it? With all the improvements and features brought into Cities: Skylines over the years, it's difficult to imagine that an all-new release could ever have even more content and more options crammed in than that by default. We've previously spoken about Cities: Skylines competition, and we specifically mentioned just what a monumental task it is to be going against a game as well-entrenched and well-regarded as Colossal Order's city-builder is. The game's Steam Workshop alone is something to be taken into account, and mod-makers are unlikely to be making the jump to something else anytime soon.

However, we do think that it's clear the devs have something cooking in the background. The development of Cities: Skylines has obviously slowed down over the past few years, which is consistent with the start of the development of something new. After all, all those devs must be working on something, right? Whether that's Cities: Skylines 2 or something else - only time will tell.

Far as improvements to Cities: Skylines go, though, a fresh coat of paint is a given. Don't get us wrong: Skyline is a beautiful game in its own right, but we bet Colossal Order could really wow us with an all-new graphics engine or something of the type. Recent post-processing developments alone would create an atmosphere unlike anything that could be accomplished today.

One more area we'd like to see improvements in is that of feature integration. Namely, a game as massive and reliant on micro and macro-management as Skylines could profit a whole lot from a better tutorial, and a more sensible user interface. Pulling this off is no easy task, but quality-of-life improvements will almost certainly be the name of the game when Skylines 2 announcement finally drops!
