Why Hitman 2 is one of the best stealth games PC

We've been quite clear about our penchant for the contemporary Hitman franchise. A stealth game developed by veterans of the genre, IOIHitman 2 is one of those games that sound almost too good to be true on paper. Then, when you actually get into it, you realize that the game delivers on all accounts!

We do believe that Hitman 3: World of Assassination is relatively close to release, but that only means that Hitman 2 is now at its absolute best. Better yet, IOI is still supplying ongoing players with community-sourced contracts and other assorted content. Honestly, there's an almost ridiculous amount of content available already, so if you're looking for something that incorporates sandbox and puzzle elements with a unique brand of social stealth, you cannot do better than Hitman 2!

Dishonored Complete Collection for fans of first-person stealth

Books could - and should - be written about the Dishonored franchise. A spiritual successor to the revered Thief series, this is one of the greatest immersive sims ever created and one of our favorite games of all time. It's sleek, it's smooth, and it's downright incredible in motion. Whether it's the game's selection of supernatural abilities or its curiously clever AI, you'll find yourself constantly and consistently challenged by whichever Dishonored game you play.

Of course, Dishonored games do provide you with the toolset to go at it in a louder and more violent manner, but no matter what player profile suits you best, the game offers plenty to enjoy. Can't recommend the pacifist stealth run enough, though! Be sure to give it a shot, as playing Dishonored titles this way affects the game world quite measurably.

Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain is the best open-world stealth game

Here's the thing: open-world stealth games don't exactly come in troves. It's easy to understand why, too! 90% of the time, a well-executed stealth encounter does require a semblance of scripting for it to work properly. Few dev teams are afforded the time and financial backing to do this on a scale large enough for their games to be considered open-world. What Hideo Kojima accomplished with Phantom Pain, however, is precisely that! Metal Gear Solid V opens up more the further you go and stands as a testament to the fact that open-world stealth titles are, indeed, a possibility.

Featuring incredibly smooth gameplay mechanics and a plethora of tools to manipulate the enemies and the environment with, this is one of those games that you need to play for yourself to fully appreciate.

Batman: Arkham games for comic-book fans

No other comic-book video game has ever garnered as much critical acclaim and fan adoration as the Batman: Arkham series. Spanning no less than four incredible stealth Batman PC games, these offer more pure gameplay potential than virtually any other game in the comic-book niche! There's more awesome stuff contained in Arkham titles than we could describe here, but what you really need to keep in mind is that they're great stealth games first and foremost.

Take up the mantle of the Dark Knight like never before and see what makes him such a threat to Gotham's criminal underworld. If you're wondering, yes, this is essentially a code for 'beat the hell out of anything and everything'! Important thing to note, though, is that you can also sneak up on crooks to beat them up! Great fun.

Assassin's Creed Unity as the pinnacle of stealth features for the franchise

The revered Assassin's Creed franchise has gone through many iterations. Its latest and greatest offerings are essentially incredible action RPG games, for example. They aren't too heavy on the stealth portion of assassinating, though, as you may have noticed!

If you're looking for the absolute pinnacle of Assassin's Creed stealth, look no further than Unity! This game leaned most heavily on the franchise's sneaking sequence stealth mechanics, and though its rocky launch overshadowed its pros with a number of technical cons, that's all in the past by now. Assassin's Creed Unity looks great, runs great, and is, in fact, a proper stealth adventure! Don't miss out on this incredible stealth game.

One of the best stealth games is Styx: Shards of Darkness

best stealth games

A far less famous offering than the ones above is undoubtedly Styx: Shards of Darkness. This cheeky stealth adventure game puts you into the boots of Styx, the sneaky goblin. Tasked with various missions that include (but aren't limited to) assassination, thievery, and general subterfuge, Styx must navigate a number of dizzyingly vertical levels to finally reach the logical conclusion of his story.

The game takes notes from the greatest genre titles like Splinter Cell, Thief, and - indeed - Assassin's Creed. The end result is a great combination of features and mechanics that won't leave you hanging. Since it's not backed by a huge intellectual property, though, chances are that you missed it entirely when it launched. Time to fix that!

Splinter Cell games as modern classics of stealth gaming in 2020

best stealth games

Classics are classics for a reason, right? This list would hardly be comprehensive without a bit on the various Splinter Cell games. Namely, there are two titles that are very clearly the best of the bunch, and those are Chaos Theory and Blacklist!

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is arguably one of the greatest stealth games ever created, and it presents the player with a number of uniquely interesting sneaking puzzles that require solving. It's slow, methodical, and very deliberate. Also important - the game has aged quite well!

On the flip side of things comes Blacklist! A slick and smooth modern rendition of Sam Fisher's many adventures, this Splinter Cell trades in Chaos Theory's granularity for advanced mobility features and plenty of badass awesomeness. Depending on your mood, either of these games will deliver great fun.

Alien: Isolation makes for a phenomenal stealth/horror hybrid

best stealth games

If it's not pure action you're yearning for, then we'd like to present you with horror stealth. The type of blood-curdling stealth that sticks with you for quite some time, even! Alien: Isolation is a particularly creepy game, and that's not only the fault of the titular biomechanical monstrosity. Human survivors and simplistic android workers will gut you sooner than help you, and the Xenomorph is simply there to be a conduit for emergent gameplay situations.

We must warn you - Alien: Isolation isn't a game for those who scare easily. The Xenomorph is unrelenting and vicious, and essentially a fancy insta-gib for players who aren't careful enough to avoid its gaze. Don't get us started about the final few hours of the game, either...

A relatively unknown best stealth game - Aragami

We're back to niche, relatively unknown titles! Aragami went under the radar due to it not having a massive advertisement engine, but it's no less impressive for it. The game uses the traditional ninja niche embellished with advanced shadow-focused gameplay mechanics to great effect. As the player infiltrates one stronghold after another, more and more of Aragami's impressive lore becomes uncovered, making the game that much more intriguing.

Aragami's mysterious magic-like abilities, too, play a major role. The so-called Shadow Powers will allow you to create your own shadows and manipulate the existing ones in a variety of ways, among other things. Really, if it's experimental gameplay you're looking for, this is the stuff to play.

For strategists, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

best stealth games

We could hardly make a best stealth games list without including the incredible Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. Yet another oriental offering, Shadow Tactics gives you control over a variety of sneaky characters who must infiltrate seemingly impossible locales without raising alarms. The legendary Commandos games being a clear inspiration to the developers, Shadow Tactics is more fun than it has any right to be. If it's a stealth strategy you're in need of, there simply is no better game to be playing in 2020!

One thing of particular note is just how vertical Shadow Tactics is. Your troops will be leaping from one rooftop to another, climbing ledges, and outpacing the enemies left and right. There's much to like in this game, but we enjoyed this the most.
