Black Myth: Wukong Gameplay – What Is It Like?

Black Myth: Wukong is exciting for a whole host of reasons. It deals with one of the most iconic Chinese myths, for one, and it looks positively phenomenal thanks to its reliance on the powerful Unreal Engine 5. Games, however, are more than just their concepts and technology: gameplay is king, specifically, and if you've never seen Wukong in motion so far, you're in for a treat.

Generally speaking, Black Myth: Wukong is kinda-sorta a Soulslike. Players step into the monkey-pawed shoes of Sun Wukong (or do they?) as he sets about his travels. It just so happens that Wukong's travels include ample amounts of high-intensity staff combat, character transformations, and acrobatic movement tricks. It's neat stuff! But hey, you don't have to take our word for it: here's 20 minutes of Black Myth: Wukong gameplay, ready to go!

Black Myth: Wukong Gameplay Showcase

Certainly, there is some jankiness still present in this pre-release build of the game. As Black Myth: Wukong won't be coming out until August this year, though, and the build featured in the video above is from last year, we're not concerned at all.

The most important bit is that we get a solid sense of how Wukong plays in action. Over the course of 20ish minutes, the player in control pits Sun Wukong against a whole array of uniquely awesome (and appropriately horrific) enemy encounters, all drawn from classic Chinese mythology.

Gameplay-wise, the bit that sets Wukong apart from any other kinda-sorta Soulslike are the setting itself and the scope of its stages. It is closer to Elden Ring than most anything else, really, and as Wukong ends up facing off against mountain-sized dragons and other monsters of a similar calibre, you can expect the sheer size of the game to follow suit.
