Dragon’s Dogma 2 – Weapons and Gear Upgrading Explained

Inventiveness and moment-to-moment flexibility are key if you want to stay alive in Dragon's Dogma 2, but as this game is still a full-blooded role-playing title, stats and gear still play a crucial role as well. Indeed, some weapons are straight-up better than the others in Dragon's Dogma 2, and there's precious little you can do to stretch some of their longevity out further still. In combat, you'll need every edge you can get over the monsters, and replacing your kit is one of the ways to go about doing that.

How do Dragon's Dogma 2's weapons work?

Here's the important bit: weapons and armor are far more flexible and varied than it seems at a glance. On top of being able to upgrade anything and everything you use, outside of Capes, you'll notice two things about the game's upgrade system:

We'll admit right away that it took us a bit to figure this out, but there are four different upgrade styles you can invest in. Outside of the blue Vermundian blacksmiths, you can also find Elven, Battahli, and Dwarven blacksmiths, each of whom will deliver a different suite of improvements. For example, whereas Vermundians will set you up with a moderate improvement to all of a weapon's key attributes, visiting a Battahli blacksmith for upgrades will lead to massive Strength/Defense improvements, but minuscule Magick/Magick Defense boosts.

Further, you don't have to be like us and go all-in on a specific blacksmithing style: you can get one upgrade from the Elves, another from the Dwarves, and then yet another from the Battahli: it's entirely your choice, and it diversifies and already hugely diverse roster of weapons and weapon upgrades.

Don't forget about Wyrmfire upgrades

Finally, after you've filled out all three of your weapon or armor's upgrade slots, you're still not done with it, necessarily. Go Northeast from the Battahli Capital and look for a small cave. Inside, you'll find the Dragonforged Merchant, who will take your Wyrmslife Crystals to further upgrade your kit beyond its natural capabilities. Weapons and armor upgraded via Wyrmfire will get a flat stat boost across the board, as well as a weight reduction. So, if you come across a piece of kit you really like, this is something for you to look into.
