Is Elden Ring a Good Beginner's Game?

If you're a total newcomer to gaming, we generally cannot in good faith recommend picking up Elden Ring as your first open world game. By all means, Elden Ring is a fair bit more flexible and open than any other Souls game, which in turn makes it easier if you're familiar with common gameplay mechanics and progression setups. If you're a complete newbie, however, you don't have the institutional knowledge necessary to make use of these systems, which is bound to result in annoyance and frustration in the end.

For those who are only just trying to play their first Soulslike, however (i.e. a Dark Souls style action RPG), then Elden Ring is arguably the best game to start with. This open world game is way less rigid and linear than almost any other FromSoft production, making it a perfect onboarding choice if you're simply unfamiliar with the niche.
