There's something to be said about the recent resurgence of Half-Life 3 theorycrafting. Commonly known under its HLX moniker - though we don't truly know what the "X" stands for right now - the majority of folks in-the-know agree that Valve absolutely is working on a new Half-Life title that isn't VR-exclusive. As for whether it's getting announced anytime soon or not... well, that's a more complicated story. If you feel lost in all the memes and the sheer insanity of some bouts of community theorycrafting, we're thrilled to be able to give you the context to make sense of it all.

Now, there's absolutely not enough time in the day to be able to parse every single nuance and complication that's happened since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 back in 2007. We do know, of course, that Valve had been developing Half-Life 3 proper in spurts: the start-and-stop of the process grinded down to a halt back in 2013 or so, only for the franchise to get a proper revival with the release of Half-Life: Alyx in 2020. The game's ending heavily hinted at the idea that there's more coming down the line, yet now it's the tail end of 2025, and Valve's been mum on the Half-Life front ever since.

It's not that Valve's not been doing anything, of course. Between SteamOS and the company's renewed lineup of gaming hardware - which we positively adore - the Valve team has been extremely busy. Don't forget about the not-so-secret shadow launch of Deadlock, either, which is slowly garnering more and more attention.

Back on track, though, the point is that Valve's been busy with stuff that's not Half-Life. It's just that folks noticed references in code to a certain mysterious, unannounced game, and that game is known as HLX. Presumably, Half-Life 3 proper! Everything points to HLX being a flat-screen (i.e. not natively VR) first-person single-player shooter where a character wears the legendary HEV suit. It doesn't truly get much more obvious than that, we don't think.

As the first code snippet reference to HLX comes from 2021, you might be wondering just what on earth's caused the recent onslaught of claims that a Half-Life game would get announced before the end of 2025? Thing is, this idea has come up from a strangely large number of sources, each of whom appears to have had a different idea about the specifics of this announcement:

The broad picture, from what we've been able to piece together, is that Half-Life 3 is due to actually release (!!!) sometime in early 2026, likely Springtime. Its announcement, however, most leakers agree should happen sometime before the end of 2025, and the tricky bit is that it looks like Valve might've set up a canary trap to get leakers out into the open.

Specifically, since most everyone agrees that an HLX announcement is imminent, it's particularly suspicious how every major "source" seems to have received a different announcement date. Valve did something similar ahead of Half-Life: Alyx's release, giving each undercover source a different date, which then made it obvious who the source of the leak was.

Something similar may be happening with HLX as well, given all the obvious hubbub and the confusion surrounding its will-it-won't-it announcement.

The good news, we think, is that we won't have to wait long to see what Valve is truly up to. Even the most cynical of leakers believe that Half-Life 3 is due to launch in early 2026, and the only question that remains is how far ahead might Valve choose to announce its existence.
