Borderlands 4: Are the New Vault Hunters a Worthy Replacement for the Old Ones?

It's almost hard to believe, but Borderlands 4 is very nearly out! Set and primed to hit the stores on September 12, Gearbox's fancy new looter-shooter promises to correct all of the prior games' wrongs and deliver a never-before-seen kind of gameplay loop to the beloved franchise. That's a heck of a pitch in our book, and we can't wait to see it in action.

Get your Borderlands 4 Pre-Order in today, and score an early bird discount with in-game bonuses!

On that note, one of the Borderlands games' most important features have always been its playable characters, the eponymous Vault Hunters. This roster of top-tier combatants has only grown form the early days of the franchise, with Brick, Lilith, Mordecai, and Roland leading the pack. Borderlands 4's dynamic cast features some of the most emblematic weirdos we've yet seen, and today we'd like to give each of them a bit of a spotlight.

Crucially, Borderlands 4's Vault Hunters need to be at the top of their game. Not just when it comes to in-game combat, of course, but also in regard to their general countenance, behavior, and quips. After all, who would genuinely want to play as as bunch of unlikable twats? We've already had a playable Claptrap, remember?

Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters: The Full List

Rafa, the Exo-Soldier

As the resident cool, edgy, and agile combatant, Yolt/Rafa is going to be the go-to choice for those who played as Mordecai, Zer0, and other such Vault Hunters prior. Functionally a swiss army knife of a character, Rafa can be fine-tuned into virtually any combat role thanks to his customizable exo-arms.

Specifically, Rafa is interesting because he's had a Deadframe exo-suit grafted to his skeleton, which effectively enhances every single one of his abilities on-the-go. The Deadframe comes equipped with a unique Apophis Lance arm-cannon, a pair of punchy Peacebreaker cannons, and twin Arc-Knife energy blades for close-quarters combat. Obviously, players can choose to spec Rafa into any of these gadgets or, conversely, into none of them. Each correlates to a particular skill tree:

All in all, Rafa is going to be an excellent option for those who want a reliable workhorse of a Vault Hunter. His kit almost exclusively leans into the Deadframe power-suit for its gimmicks, and we'd be hard-pressed to say it doesn't look downright marvelous.

Vex, the Siren

Sirens have historically been one of Borderlands' most unique concepts. Exceedingly powerful reality-breakers, Sirens wield what is this universe's closest equivalent to literal eldritch magic, and that makes them uniquely capable as Vault Hunters in particular.

Obviously, Borderlands 4 would've hardly been a Borderlands game if we didn't have a badass playable Siren! Vex might not have any fancy gadgets attached to her back, but she's an exceedingly powerful elementalist who can summon magical avatars to do her (usually violent) bidding. There's a magic cat summon, too, and who can resist one of those? Crucially, though, Vex's unique Vault Hunter Trait means she's always attuned to the specific elemental effect of the gun she's carrying at a given time. The same elemental effect is then applied to all of her Action Skills and Melee attacks. Handy stuff!

More specifically, here are Vex's three unique Skill Trees:

Sirens have always been exciting characters to play in Borderlands games, but Vex in particular looks like she's going to be a doozy!

Amon, the Forgeknight

Borderlands 4's resident tank/titan character archetype, the Forgeknight leans towards the more fantasy-focused Tiny Tina offerings for his skill-set. Another elementalist, much like Vex, Amon wields a massive variety of Forgeskill weapons alongside combat drones that can pulverize enemies at short-to-medium range.

While playing as the Forgeknight, players are going to be able to spec out his skill tree into three distinctive elemental weapons: the Forgehammer, the twin Forgeaxes, and the Forgeshield. As is the case with every other Vault Hunter, these active skills can be modified and attuned in a huge number of ways, and that's not even going into the specifics of Amon's unique Vault Hunter Trait. First things first, then, here are the Forgeknight's skill trees:

As a fancy warrior-poet and elemental blacksmith, Amon represents a curious evolution of the usual tank and berserker video game tropes. We think he's going to be a tremendous addition to Borderlands' stellar Vault Hunter roster, that's for sure.

Harlowe, the Gravitar

The designated soldier archetype, Harlowe is a former Maliwan combat scientist turned Vault Hunter, and she's a techie in all the ways that count. In a practical sense and in the context of Borderlands 4's core gameplay loop, this means that Harlowe - or the Gravitar, as she's known - is a gadget-heavy character with a penchant for support roles.

If you're a fan of crowd control, the Gravitar is the character for. Her Maliwan contraptions grant her ample Cryo and Radiation area-of-effect abilities that slow down and weaken enemies and she can empower her allies on the side. Here are Harlowe's dedicated skill trees:

All things being equal, Harlowe may well end up being the most fun Vault Hunter of the current troupe, what with her reliance on what is effectively old-school legacy tech by the time Borderlands 4 takes place. We'll have to wait and see how her gameplay loop behaves in practice once the game is available, however!

Hunt some Vaults!

Borderlands 4: Final Pre-Release Fact Sheet!

The highly anticipated Borderlands 4 is almost here, bringing chaos-fueled looter shooter action back to fans worldwide. With four new Vault Hunters, billions of weapons, and a brand new planet to explore, Gearbox Software's latest entry promises to deliver the mayhem that defines the franchise.

We've already discussed how Borderlands 4 is revamping its core gameplay loop to evolve the franchise for a brave new era. All things considered, stuff's looking very, very good indeed!

Borderlands 4 - PC Release Date

Borderlands 4 launches on September 11, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). Originally scheduled for September 23, 2025, Gearbox moved the release date forward by 11 days due to development progress.

Nintendo Switch 2 players will need to wait a bit longer still, with that version arriving on October 3, 2025. Not too long of a wait, though, and if the prior Borderlands games are anything to go by, this version too should be fairly competent on the on the relatively low-spec handheld from Nintendo. Really though, we're much more interested in seeing how the Steam Deck handles this, and whether Gearbox might push out some dedicated optimizations for good measure. Remember: Borderlands 3 ran remarkably well on the Deck, after all!

The global PC launch goes live at 9 AM Pacific Time on September 11th, while console players get local midnight releases on September 12th in their respective regions. This means some lucky New Zealand players can technically start their vault hunting adventure around 7 AM Eastern Time on September 11th in the United States.

Pre-order Goodies and Game Versions

Borderlands 4 comes in multiple editions, each packed with different bonuses and post-launch content. Here's what we know about each version:

Borderlands 4 Standard Edition @ $69.99

The base game includes the pre-order bonus Gilded Glory Pack featuring:

Note that purchasing the game after the pre-order deals are gone (i.e. after its September 11 launch date) will not net you the Gilded Glory DLC any longer. Make use of the deal while it's available!

Borderlands 4 Deluxe Edition @ $99.99

Everything from the Standard Edition plus the Bounty Pack DLC:

Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition @ $129.99

The ultimate Borderlands 4 experience includes everything from previous editions plus the Ornate Order and Vault Hunter DLCs:

Obviously, the Super Deluxe edition of Borderlands 4 is a massive investment that might still not pan out. If you need more help with making that decision, we've got you covered here.

Borderlands 4 - PC System Requirements

Borderlands 4 demands significantly more from PC hardware compared to previous entries in the series. The official system requirements may appear surprisingly steep for a stylized game, but do keep in mind that this is a full-fledged Unreal 5 title. Those have historically been a bit of a pain for low-spec machines, and we're hoping Gearbox has managed to sidestep the performance problems and the StutterStruggle at large.

Here's the spec, though note that you can read our more thorough Borderlands 4 system requirements guide on what they mean, too:

Minimum Requirements

Recommended Requirements

The jump to Unreal Engine 5 and the seamless open-world design explain these demanding specs. PC gaming experts note that the 8-core CPU requirement and high VRAM demands set Borderlands 4 apart from other 2025 releases. An SSD is mandatory regardless of which settings tier you target, and since it's 2025, we highly recommend having an SSD for game installations to begin with, across the board.

Post-Launch Support

Gearbox has outlined an ambitious roadmap for Borderlands 4 content beyond launch. The official post-launch roadmap reveals both free and paid content planned through 2026.

Arguably, one of the biggest issues with Borderlands 3 was that it never did receive nearly as much post-launch support as its predecessor did. Borderlands 4 lends itself much better to an extremely prolonged post-campaign content schedule in comparison, and with a less annoying assortment of villains and dialogue, we expect long-time fans to have a hoot playing the game.

Here are the bits and bobs that Gearbox has already confirmed for post-launch content access.

Free Content Updates

Paid DLC Content

The post-launch DLC structure mirrors Borderlands 3 with expanded content offerings:

Bounty Packs (4 total) - Included in Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions

Story Packs (2 total) - Included in Super Deluxe edition only

The emphasis on new Vault Hunters addresses longtime community requests. Each DLC character will offer completely different playstyles with three unique Action Skills and branching skill trees, just like the base game characters. And hey, if you're concerned as to whether the new Vault Hunters have what it takes to replace the old beloved protagonists, we've extensively covered the topic in a separate article.

Stay tuned for more on Borderlands 4!

Borderlands 4 represents Gearbox's most ambitious entry yet, combining the series' signature chaos with modern open-world design and expanded post-launch support. Is it going to resolve all of Borderlands 3's outstanding issues? Well, we've still got some reservations, but everything points to it being the case! Obviously, do stay tuned: lots more Borderlands 4 content is coming your way very, very soon - right here at 2Game.

And hey, if you simply cannot wait another week to get some Borderlands playtime in, consider checking out one of these titles in the interim.

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion Launches Today – Is It Worth It?

Six years after the original Daemon X Machina made its debut, Marvelous has finally delivered the sequel that mech fans have been waiting for. Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion launched today, September 5, 2025, bringing enhanced armored combat to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Does it deliver, though?

The game comes from the same creative team that brought us the original, with Kenichiro Tsukuda returning as creator and producer, alongside mechanical design legend Shoji Kawamori. This time around, the development team has made the jump to Unreal Engine 5, which is absolutely going to be cause for concern if you're familiar with it, performance-wise.

On that note, early reports suggest that Titanic Scion runs much more smoothly than its predecessor at the very least, particularly on the newer hardware. The Nintendo Switch 2 version maintains a steady 30fps in both docked and handheld modes, though there are occasional hiccups during vehicle sequences. PC and PlayStation 5 players can expect even better performance, though you may wish to stay tuned for more info on that front.

Get Daemon x Machina: Titanic Scion at 2Game!

What's New, What's Old?

Titanic Scion takes place in a world where humanity has split between the Ground-dwelling masses and the enhanced Outers who rule from their skybound Garden paradise. You play as a fallen Outer who joins the Reclaimers, a resistance group fighting against the oppressive Sovereign Axiom government. It's a solid setup that gives your mech battles some meaningful context.

The biggest gameplay change comes in the form of Exosuits, which work alongside the traditional Arsenal mechs we know and love. This creates a more varied combat experience where you can switch between nimble suit-based movement and the heavy firepower of full mech combat. The open-world design lets you explore using different vehicles too, including some surprisingly rideable alien creatures that add a bit of variety to the traversal loop.

Combat feels faster and more immediate than the original, while still maintaining that satisfying weight when you're piloting the larger Arsenal units. The weapon and equipment system returns with some tweaks, letting you immediately equip gear dropped by defeated enemies. New creatures called Immortals provide DNA fusion materials that let you enhance your character in biological ways, separate from the mechanical upgrades. All in all, then, Titanic Scion should feel like a genuinely meaningful sequel to those that enjoyed the original, all the while staying reasonably compelling as a standalone title.

Co-Op's In, At Last!

One of the most welcome additions is proper cooperative play support. Up to three players can tackle story missions and boss battles together online, which should make some of those tougher encounters much more manageable. The system works across all platforms, though we're still waiting for confirmation on cross-platform compatibility.

The game launches with three digital editions to choose from. The Standard Edition gets you the base game plus some early bonuses like the Variable Breadth longbow and starter items. Step up to the Digital Deluxe Edition and you'll receive upcoming DLC content planned throughout 2025, including additional weapon sets and Arsenal skins.

The top-tier Super Digital Deluxe Edition includes everything from the Digital Deluxe version, plus a digital art book and soundtrack accessed through a separate app. Players who pre-ordered by September 4 also receive the Bahamut Arsenal skin, Beguiling Suit, and Victorious Gleam laser sword.

It's the usual setup, really, but you may be happy to hear that we've got all three versions at 2Game with a sweet early bird discount.

Technical Details and Availability

XSEED Games handles North American publishing, with Marvelous USA and Marvelous Europe covering their respective territories. The game requires approximately 45GB of storage space on PC, with similar requirements expected across other platforms. In that sense, it's no big deal, but performance is the bigger consideration given that this is an Unreal 5 title.

One thing that's been reported by players is that the game runs notably better in offline mode compared to online play, with faster loading times and improved stability when not connected to servers. This suggests the online infrastructure might need some additional fine-tuning post-launch, and you may wish to stick to offline mods unless co-op is a big draw.

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion represents a solid evolution of the original formula, addressing many of the technical issues that held back the 2019 release while expanding the scope and scale of the mech combat experience. Whether you're a returning pilot or new to the series, there's plenty here to enjoy for anyone who's ever wanted to pilot a giant robot into battle.

Human-sized mecha? Is that a niche we were unaware of?

Football Manager 26: The Match Day Trailer is Here!

Football Manager 26 has finally dropped its first official trailer, and it's a bit of a shocker. A good one for the time being, at least, because the new Match Day engine is nothing short of a generational leap forward for the game! You can check it out right below, if you don't believe us!

After the shock cancellation of Football Manager 25 in February, Sports Interactive had one shot to prove they could deliver on their ambitious vision. The trailer features live-action scenes filmed of the Match Day experience through the lens of the official Premier League license, but also provides a first look at some rendered footage running on the Unity engine. Give it a go right here:

Unity Engine Shown Off: Was it Worth It?

FM26 marks the Unity engine's long-awaited debut, and judging by this first trailer, Sports Interactive have delivered a huge upgrade. Animations look smoother: from free-kicks to long shots, player movement feels more natural. Ball physics finally behave like a real match, no more ping-pong bounces.

FM26 aims to have smoother player movement, better animations, and more realistic football details. The devs say this will make every match feel more real. The game will use volumetric animations and motion capture taken from real football. The visual leap becomes crystal clear when comparing side-by-side screenshots. Compared side-by-side with FM24, it's night and day in terms of detail. No, it's not yet at the same level as a FIFA or a PES (remember those?), but boy howdy is it closer than ever! Crowd volume has been dialed up too, a far cry from the sparse, bland crowds typically associated with the series.

Granted, tenured players may still recognize the underlying animations beneath the fancy match render, but that's all in good fun we think. All of this combines to make the single most convincing Football Manager game we've ever had. And that's just the start of it.

Premier League Licensing is here!

Sports Interactive has signed a four-year deal with the English Premier League to secure official licensing for all 20 clubs and provide broadcast packaging. This feature has been something fans have been wanting for years, and it serves as the backbone for the future of FM.

The enhanced presentation shows in every frame. Camera angles are closer to TV broadcast style, making the game feel more like a live matchday experience. The crowd is no longer lifeless! Fans react to goals, misses and big tackles. Stadium details shine: advertising banners, benches, tunnels, and of course the Premier League trophy.

We were pretty gutted to see Football Manager 25 get the ax after already being hit with a four-month delay. Sega and Sports Interactive said at the time that it was due to difficulties implementing all of the big new features it wanted to add to the sports game, which included an engine switch to Unity.

With that in mind, FM26 rolls up all the goodies that we should've received last year with a bunch of all-new stuff, to boot. Football Manager 26 delivers the most immersive entry in the series to date, with significant advancements in visuals. Powered by the transition to the Unity engine, the game features a refreshed User Interface and enhanced graphics, offering a more intuitive and visually stunning gameplay experience.

The technical challenges were worth pushing through. The extra year of development helped the developers properly translate the C++ code into C# (for Unity engine). Sports Interactive shared a 30-second video teaser with glimpses of FM26 actual game footage. The graphics quality of this pre-match day first look is impressive compared to what we were used to in previous FM versions.

Beware the Upgraded Spec Reqs

While it's hard to say anything definitive based on what we've seen so far, we can use the proposed system requirements for FM 25, which was never released, to get an idea of what kind of power you may need. Even with a graphical overhaul, there's no risk of Football Manager 26 demanding one of the best graphics card picks from our comprehensive buying guide.

If your computer runs FM24 okay, it's possible it should cope fine with FM26. However, the minimum system requirements will change towards more demanding specs. Do stay tuned on that front, as we'll have in-depth explainers about performance and spec requirements as soon as we can.

Release Window Confirmed: Stick Around and Learn More!

So expect FM26 to release in the first or second week of November 2025. The Steam page is up for FM26, but the game can't be pre-ordered just yet. The release of Football Manager 26 is expected in the usual FM launch window, which means mid-late October for early access and early-mid November for the final game.

After the disappointment of missing Football Manager 25 entirely, Sports Interactive appears to have used the extra development time wisely. The Unity engine migration looks to have paid off with visuals that finally match the tactical depth the series is famous for. With autumn 2025 approaching fast, the wait for the most ambitious Football Manager release yet is almost over. Will it pay off?

It’s alive!

Hell Is Us: Watcher’s Nest Puzzle Solved (Vigil Elder Unlock)

Hell Is Us is, shockingly, one of the few games that actually successfully leans into its puzzle-heavy gameplay loop. You get no ready-made maps on-the-go, no tips and tricks on how to go about solving problems, and no quest logs to reference whenever you want. Instead, all you get are inferences and suggestions, and a whole bunch of ways to make heads and tails of them.

Crucially, sometimes you'll simply have to complete a particular puzzle to progress in Hell Is Us, as is the case with the big Watcher's Nest puzzle. This ties directly into the game's grander progression scheme, with a way to permanently (!) stop enemies from respawning in a particular region. A heck of a feature, but you wouldn't know it! We're here to help, though, with a reasonably spoiler-free explanation of how to solve this puzzle.

Play Hell Is Us on day one with 2Game!

How to solve the Watcher's Nest Puzzle and unlock Vigil Elder

The Watcher's Nest is basically the crux of Remi's progress up until this point in the game. A whole host of leads and developments tie into this location, and we highly suggest exhausting all the dialogue options with all the NPCs you come across to figure out what's actually going on here.

Obviously, you can (and maybe should?) figure out the puzzle at your own pace to make the most of it. Yet, this one definitely feels a tad overwhelming at first, and we understand why you might want to skip the figuring out portion of it. So, without going into the nitty-gritty of it, the Watcher's Nest Puzzle in Vyssa Hills is all about slotting four unique ceramic flowers into the right slots on the hideout's walls.

First, you need to explore the entirety of Watcher's Nest and go down a ladder deeper into the crypt. There, you'll find a mysterious lever that won't do anything at that point, and then search the other surrounding sarcophagi for items. One of them will hold 4x Ceramic Flower items, and these are the bobs you need to fiddle around with.

Head on back to the entrance to Watcher's Nest from Vyssa Hills, and let's begin:

Flower #1

The first Ceramic Flower goes into the third crest from the left, with the Grief Symbol (as illustrated above). Look for it in the entrance area, right around the fancy round stone table.

Flower #2

The second Ceramic Flower isn't far away from the first one. Head into the hallway to the right from the round table and look to your left, as shown in the picture above. Slot the Ceramic Flower underneath the shield engraved with a book.

Flower #3

The third Ceramic Flower needs to go deeper into the hideout: look for a wall with a fancy blue banner hanging about. It's going to be flanked by two flower inserts, but you want to slot the flower into the one to the right, relative to the banner itself.

Flower #4

Finally, the fourth Ceramic Flower needs to be inserted into a cheekily hidden spot, just behind the big whiteboard used by the deceased members of the Vigil. It can be found in the central chamber of the hideout, in the room with all the computers and assorted material strewn about. Look behind the whiteboard and then insert the final Flower into the left slot, the one with the plaque reading 'Algea' next to it.

With that all sorted out, there's going to be rumbling noise inviting you back down the ladder, into the crypt where you initially found all those Ceramic Flowers. Interact with the big lever to open the central sarcophagus, collect all the items inside, and then head back up. As you ascend, you'll hear the sound of a toilet being flushed, and then meet a new character in the Watcher's Nest proper.

Hell Is Us: Timeloops Explained (and How to Close Them)

Though we're yet to really go deep into Hell Is Us's awfully New Weird narrative, it's plainly obvious at a glance that this isn't your grandpappy's action RPG. There's a whole bunch of (largely) inexplicable stuff happening in this game, and it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that time flubbery plays a part, too. Indeed, even the game's first proper exploration area, the Acasa Marshes, has an ominous Timeloop smack-dab in the middle of it. What does it do, though?

Hell Is Us's Timeloops are basically extremely potent temporal artifacts that are more-or-less the ingress points for the Demons' invasion of Hadea. In gameplay terms, closing these Timeloops makes it so that the Demons don't respawn, which is an obviously handy thing to do!

Play Hell Is Us on day one with 2Game!

How to Close a Timeloop in Hell Is Us?

Though you might expect a Timeloop to be a simple combat gauntlet in Hell Is Us, this couldn't be further from the truth. Well, okay, the bits you need to do before heading into the resident Timeloop sure do involve a lot of combat, but that's beside the point. Here's exactly what you need to do to close a Timeloop:

Simple, right? Not at all! There's a lot of intermediate steps to go through before you can do any of this, and the Watcher's Nest puzzle is an obviously big blocker. We'll discuss that in a separate article, so stay tuned! Taking down all the Timeloop Demons might be a problem too, depending on your difficulty setup, so beware. They crop up strewn across the entire region, so you'll need to be fairly thorough in exploring it. You'll know that you've killed all the Timeloop Guardian Demons by the deep rumbling sound that'll appear after doing so.

The good thing about talking it out with Vigil Elder is that he'll give you an item known as the Guardian Detector, which allows you to more easily suss out Timeloop Demons and cut them down. Handy stuff.

Once you're through with all of that, you'll need one of three different Amine Prisms to close down a particular Timeloop:

Upon entering a Timeloop, seek out your companion drone and interact with it to get an anomaly assessment, letting you know precisely what kind of Amine Prism needs to be used to shut it down. Prisms can be found as quest rewards, but also by selecting the right dialogue options when discussing Timeloops with certain NPCs.

Remember, too, to go back to Vigil Elder whenever you shut down a Timeloop to score a bevy of rewards. Do so for each completed Good Deed and Mystery, too. Gildas is nice like that.

Hell Is Us: Gameplay Systems Explained (Is It a Soulslike?)

Hell Is Us has released to advanced access via its Deluxe Edition, and boy is the game full of surprises. For one, it's proving to be remarkably scalable and performant across a wide range of machines both slow and fast, but it's also handling its subject matter incredibly well. We'll get to the game's lore in due time, of course, but in the interim, there's the issue of what kind of game this is, to begin with. Specifically, due to the way it's structured, Hell Is Us certainly seems like a proper Soulslike at a glance, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Confused yet? Don't be! It's actually all rather simple: Hell Is Us defies expectations in most ways, and its gameplay and progression loops absolutely fall under that same umbrella. Let us explain!

Play Hell Is Us on day one with 2Game!

Is Hell Is Us a Soulslike?

Though you absolutely can crank the difficulty in Hell Is Us to make things tough on yourself, the game doesn't force you into a challenging combat loop in the same way as a modern Soulslike might. In fact, if you wanted an Elden Ring type of experience, we're sorry to report that you won't get it in Hell Is Us.

Instead, Hell Is Us can be every bit as easy or, indeed, difficult as you want it to be. Tucked into its settings menu is a highly scalable enemy health and damage output option, and you can even disable the vast majority of respawning enemies and/or any loss of items and currency upon death. That's not very Soulslike of it, is it now?

Here are the key gameplay differences between a true Soulslike and Hell Is Us, summarized:

There's more, of course, but that's the gist of it. Hell Is Us is absolutely its own thing, rather than being yet another in a long line of Soulslike retreads. This means not everyone's going to be keen on what it's got to offer, but that's okay. Hell Is Us is for you if you enjoy New Weird games (and this might be strongest contender in the niche yet, believe it or not) such as Control, and if you're extremely interested in its narrative and anti-war themes. There's lots to like here, but Hell Is Us ain't no Soulslike.

Expected Elden Ring? Oof, in that case!

Hell Is Us: A Comprehensive Performance and Graphics Overview

Who knew a fantasy hack 'n' slash could have so much to say about the realities of war! Hell Is Us is now available via its advanced access scheme for all Deluxe Edition owners of the game, and we've so far been thoroughly impressed with its grim subject matter. As we've been able to get a bunch of hands-on time, this also means a proper performance review was due, and that's precisely what we've got for you today.

Though it's not a full-on AAA blockbuster, Hell Is Us is still an extremely good-looking game with some massive open-world levels for the players to explore. This initially made us think it wouldn't perform well on low-spec machines, but the fact is that we got the game to run perfectly stably on even the humble Steam Deck! That's right: Hell Is Us is a very viable option for Deck owners, and down below we'll give you both the optimal graphics settings for the Steam Deck, and a set of optimized settings for desktop PCs, to balance out the game's graphics and performance.

Hell Is Us Performance Review

Before we get to Steam Deck specifics, here's our broader take on Hell Is Us's performance envelope: it's shockingly good! Well, okay, maybe not shockingly good, but certainly far better than we expected it to be. Hell Is Us runs very, very well out-of-the-gate on our RTX 4070Ti/Ryzen 5 7600X machine at 'High' settings. Really, it sits in stark comparison to the strangely mishandled PC build of MGS: Delta, which we recently critiqued for this exact reason.

Even moving on to the 'Ultra' preset with Frame-Gen enabled and a few things tweaked down here and there remains a viable option on this rig, which suggests solid scalability and a performant experience overall. There's really not much to complain about in this regard, we think.

In a more practical sense, here's the best set of balanced PC settings that offer excellent performance without compromising Hell Is Us's striking visuals in any meaningful way:

We've found that Textures and Foliage settings, in particular, have an extreme effect on the game's performance, so try tweaking these accordingly if you do come across any issues. On that note, there are a few other things we recommend you tweak to get a better playing experience out of Hell Is Us!

Finally, keep in mind that the game's Motion Blur rendering is handled via the 'Post-Processing' option without a more granular solution. This isn't optimal, but if you go into Hell Is Us's Accessibility Settings, you'll be able to fine-tune how strong and pervasive motion blur is, at least. We've set it down to 'Reduced' and had a massively improved experience compared to the default, which felt fairly excessive at a glance.

Optimal Hell Is Us Steam Deck Settings

As for the Steam Deck, we're going to recommend sticking to a 30 FPS cap at the full 90Hz refresh rate for Hell Is Us. 40 FPS is feasible down the line with some optimization mods and/or patching from the devs' side of things, but it's just not as rock-solid as we want it to be.

Instead, if you go for a 30 FPS performance target, you'll get a longer battery life, a virtually perfect frame-time graph, and a game that doesn't look half-bad for a handheld experience. Don't forget that in-home streaming might also be an option for you, in some cases!

Back on track, there's really only a few settings you need to modify to get Hell Is Us to run well on the Steam Deck:

With that all out of the way, you're also going to want to go into the 'Accessibility' options tab and set 'Motion Blur' to 'Reduced' level. We know that motion blur is often disliked, but it's a very necessary setting at low frame-rates, and will help smooth over those 30 FPS for a surprisingly decent and smooth playing experience.

You may also wish to experiment with setting some options to a higher level, which is fair! Textures in particular can look muddy in close-up scenes, which there are plenty of in Hell Is Us. Yet, the Deck's fairly limited amount of RAM makes this a challenge, and we'd instead recommend staying tuned for further performance optimizations via patching.

Still! This is a huge success for the Deck, and we think Hell Is Us is well on its way to be a cult classic, even this early in its lifecycle.
