Top 25 Best Horror Games, Ranked

#25: Othercide

A turn-based horror strategy game with puzzle elements where players battle against the personification of entropy itself. A heck of a premise, we think! Not scary in moment-to-moment gameplay, but boy will it make you think.

#24: World War Z: Aftermath

Best Horror Games: War World Z

To date, no other game has successfully encapsulated just how horrific a true zombie horde could get. Aftermath does this easily, with a stellar gameplay loop and an entire population's worth of monsters to gun down.

#23: Prey

Best Horror Games: Prey

A persistent immersive sim with horrific implications for the state of the universe, Prey delivers the right kind of horror for fans of the old System Shock games. Few other titles in its niche could compare.

#22: Little Nightmares 2

Best Horror Games: Little Nightmares 2

If nightmares are your forte, Little Nightmares 2 delivers them in droves. Players take control over two child-like characters as they attempt to survive one of the most chilling settings in all of gaming.

#21: Condemned: Criminal Origins

Though the franchise ended up going nowhere, the first Condemned game still stands on its own two feet. It's the personification of early aught horror media, with all the pros and cons that come with it. A true time capsule, if you will.

#20: F.E.A.R.

Easily the best first-person horror shooter of its era, F.E.A.R. lets you feel like a badass all the while scaring you into submission every so often. With bullet time ready to go, it's a must-player for FPS and horror game fans.

#19: Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today

Best Horror Games: Banner 11

Is existential dread what you're looking for? Well, the relatively unknown Dead Synchronicity goes all-in on that front. This point 'n' click adventure pulls no punches with its narrative, and the implications of its narrative will stick with you.

#18: Control

Best Horror Games: Banner 17

A true champion of the New Weird media movement, Control takes you on a mad romp through the Oldest House. What is the Oldest House? Well, that's one of the questions you'll need to find answers to on your own. No mean feat, we assure you.

#17: Conarium

Best Horror Games: Banner 3

Easily one of the best examples of true Lovecraftian horror, Conarium won't offer you any concrete answers as to what might be going on. It will, however, tell the story of a person that's hopelessly lost in a world that offers no quarter.

#16: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

The darkest, grittiest Wolfenstein game of them all, Return is a brutal romp through one of the worst fictional iterations of Nazi Germany. Just when you think you've got the situation handled - that's when the horror kicks into overdrive.

#15: The Long Reach

Best Horror Games: Banner

The Long Reach is one of those unassuming side-scrollers that delivers one gut punch after another. It's a simple-looking,  yet truly horrific game whose story will stick with you for times to come.

#14: Forgive Me Father

Best Horror Games: Banner 7

A Lovecraftian version of Doom, Forgive Me Father puts the player into the shoes of a badass that won't submit to the fickle will of an Elder God. Will an upgraded Tommy Gun keep you safe from abject madness, though? Just one way to find out!

#13: This War of Mine

This War of Mine is a horror game unlike any other, in that it's a horrifically realistic depiction of a modern-day war. No punches pulled, no horrors left unexplored. Only play this game if you can take what it dishes out, because it's a hard experience to parse through.

#12: Resident Evil 2

The remake of one of the best RE games of all time is no mean feat. Step into the boots of Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy as their fates intertwine with the Racoon City catastrophe for the first time.

#11: The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

House of Ashes is, by most measures, the best Dark Picture we've seen so far. Its twists are difficult to predict and its narrative makes perfect sense in the context within which it is established. Will everyone survive the night? Not likely, no.

#10: Tormented Souls

Best Horror Games: Tormented Souls

A celebration of classic PSX-era tank control horror games, Tormented Souls stays in its own lane without attempting to innovate in a meaningful way. If that sounds like a critique - it shouldn't! The game knows what it's about, and executes its niche admirably well.

#9: DOOM 3

Best Horror Games: Banner 5

The scariest Doom game of them all has aged better than most would've anticipated. Whereas its successors took the franchise in a different direction, Doom 3 went all-in on the spooks and it paid of with dividends.

#8: Resident Evil Revelations 2

Until Capcom started producing first-person Resident Evil games, Revelations 2 was easily the company's scariest game in the franchise. Dark, grimy, and surprisingly grounded, this game is a long and arduous romp through some of the universe's worst monstrosities.

#7: The Quarry

The Quarry is, at its core, a werewolf story. Its uniquely horrific depictions of violence and an almost sandbox-life approach to narrative development will intrigue every true horror fan, however, with a few surprises peppered along the way.

#6: The Evil Within 2

Best Horror Games: Banner 13

One of the very few true open-world horror games, The Evil Within 2 takes the concept of a shared nightmare and runs with it. This is a tense, unforgiving romp that's every bit as likely to leave you crying as it is to spook you.

#5: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Make no mistake - Dark Corners of the Earth was very confused about what it wanted to do with the Call of Cthulhu IP, and it definitely wears too many hats for its own good. This, however, is precisely what helps the game stand out from any of its spiritual successors.

You see, Dark Corners of the Earth is a richly detailed standalone story that understands the very core of a good Lovecraft horror story. In fact, it adapts the IP phenomenally well, and it's almost entirely unique in that regard. Players do need to contend with its many faults to experience its heights, however.

Still well worth the experience in our book, however, and it's unlikely to be dethroned anytime soon.

#4: Resident Evil Village

Best Horror Games: Banner 15

Village is easily the most engaging and cohesive Resident Evil we've seen yet. It's a brutally violent experience that handles its legacy remarkably well, all the while it succeeds in delivering exciting new narrative beats and an interesting new take on the classic IP formula.

There's a little bit of everything RE in this game. From tense, borderline impossible survival scenarios to incredibly satisfying puzzles. In between, you're getting some of the finest combat gameplay we had seen since Resident Evil 6.

Perhaps most importantly, Village underlines Capcom's dedication to the first-person gameplay setup. We cannot wait to see what comes next!

#3: GTFO

GTFO is handily the most hardcore game on this list, and it's not even a competition. Imagine Left 4 Dead, but one that focuses heavily on stealth. Where one wrong move means slow, merciless mutilation and a visit to dark things that reside in spaces between spaces. Yeah, that's GTFO alright.

This is a game where slow, methodical combat is the only way forward. You need a team of players that can coordinate well and execute plans on the fly. This pays off substantially, however.

Not only does GTFO have an inventive and engaging narrative, but it's also one that will keep you on your seat's edge as you unravel the mystery of the complex your character is trapped in. Make no mistake - there's nothing else on the market quite like GTFO, and this is cooperative horror at its absolute best.

#2: Resident Evil 7

Best Horror Games: Banner 9

Resident Evil 7 is a terrifying game. For long stretches of its playtime, you'll either fight against unkillable horrors or be completely unarmed and half-broken, to begin with. While its successor, Village, is a delightful game, it never gets quite as horrific as 7 was at almost any point in time.

Another important feature of this game was that players were unsure about its place in the greater RE narrative when it first came out. It was a localized, contained experience that felt outright supernatural at times, after all.

Though we now know that it was a direct follow-up to many of the previous Resident Evil titles, the air of mystery that surrounded RE7 at launch remains unrivaled still.

#1: Alien: Isolation

Finally, Alien: Isolation is the ultimate horror game far as the team here at 2Game is concerned. This is a tense, arduous experience that feels incredibly true to the original vision of what a Xenomorph truly was supposed to be. Here, you're facing off against the ultimate predator and you have no hope of killing it.

At most, you can chase the Xenomorph away and hope that it leaves you alone long enough to progress a tiny bit further.

The creature's AI is malicious and meticulous, and though the game doesn't have any real jump-scares, certain moments and situations will leave you reeling in your seat. Do not miss out on this one - just be prepared to spend about two dozen hours running from the Xeno.
