Elden Ring DLC? Here’s Everything We Know So Far!

Elden Ring DLC, is it a thing? Let's find out! I mean, now that the dust has settled on the FromSoftware and Bandai Namco latest flagship RPG base game, it's time to discuss Elden Ring DLC properly. The big question, of course, is what on earth is going on with it? Are new adventures on the cards?

After all, the sheer zeitgeist that Elden Ring captured ahead and upon its release was downright ridiculous. Maybe not entirely unprecedented, but it was everything the gaming community could talk about for a little while. Of course, considering FromSoftware's track record, a big upcoming Elden Ring DLC or two is very likely to be coming, too.

But! There are a few very important things to keep in mind about the potential release of a fully fledged expansion for the original game.

You see, not only has it not been confirmed in any official capacity, but even if it were underway, we know effectively nothing about any kind of story details! Short of going on some unresolved narrative tangents (new weapons? New enemies? And/or new DLC connected to an Elden Lord perhaps?), FromSoftware has left plenty of room for itself to work. Today, we'd like to go over all of the information we have about any possible upcoming Elden Ring DLC and see where that gets us.

Elden Ring DLC - Is It A Thing?

First things first, it is very important for us to settle on one point of contention right away: As of June 2022, neither FromSoft nor Bandai Namco have confirmed or denied the existence of an Elden Ring DLC expansion pack. So, while there's been virtually no official talk about any post-launch support for the game - which admittedly doesn't need any more content - developers haven't denied any upcoming DLC, either.

Now, do keep in mind that we are reasonably sure that an Elden Ring DLC is coming sooner or later. That being said, it's every bit as possible that FromSoftware had no real plans in place to facilitate post-launch content. While most of the studio's Soulsborne releases have had DLCs, Elden Ring is arguably their biggest, most comprehensive release yet. There's no guarantee at this time that it'd be getting even more content down the line.

Evidence of Elden Ring DLC

To start off on a cynical note, let's talk about financial reports first. FromSoftware's parent company, Kadokawa, revealed that Elden Ring moved roughly three times the number of copies the company expected it would (!). On that note, Kadokawa's spokesperson said that they are "considering a number of measures to help customers continue to enjoy [Elden Ring]." That's pretty cut-and-dry, no?

But, if you're interested in in-game "proof" instead, there's much to consider.

The mysterious central portion of the map of Elden Ring is something we had previously talked about. If you're not sure what that references, specifically, it's the big Liurnia lake. Or, rather the strange singular cloud that remains smack-dab in the middle of it, where all the Divine Towers intersect. In its current state, the Elden Ring map even has a big old hole in the overworld, as if FromSoft might plop something down in that location in the future.

There are the arenas strewn across Elden Ring's The Lands Between too, of course. These huge colosseum-looking structures are odd in that they look like they should have a function of some sort. Yet, even though they are fully modeled and explorable, players currently cannot do absolutely anything with them. Then there are all the disparate narrative threads that were seemingly left untouched, such as that of Miquella himself. Are these clues withing the Elden Ring game itself?

What Could Elden Ring DLC Do?

Now that we've settled the notion that we do not know for sure if expansions for Elden Ring are coming, we can proceed! As the previous section suggests, Elden Ring does pack a fair few unresolved plotlines. Some of these were patched back into the game via hotfixes, but many were not.

And really, if there were to be a big Elden Ring DLC in production, there's no way it won't be centered around Miquella. In the base game, Malenia's brother is little more than a side-plot, but could very well be one of the most important characters in lore. For the duration of the game's events, Miquella is effectively asleep, having been kidnapped by Morgh. Miquella's cocoon and the creepy corpse-hand that's hanging out of it are left unresolved, even though some characters hint at the notion that, when he wakes up, there might be hell to pay.

Or, y'know. FromSoftware might do something entirely different. This is Elden Ring, after all. Expect the unexpected!

A Legacy Dungeon, or something more?

Setting the subject matter of the Elden Ring DLC itself aside for a bit, there's also its nature to consider. And, surprisingly enough, there are several different ways that they could go about doing that:

A single massive Legacy Dungeon wouldn't be too out of place, either, and it seems like the sort of thing that FromSoftware might opt to do for a grand old Miquella DLC, for example. The most realistic solution - judging by what little we know right now - is that there's a Legacy-tier Dungeon coming smack-dab in the middle of the Liurnia lake. If it ends up featuring Elden Ring's Miquella, there's likely a new Rune in store for players as well!

Whether that ends up being the case or not, though, is anyone's guess at this point!

Closing Thoughts

In summary, what we're left with is a big ol' question mark hovering over our heads. What is FromSoftware doing with Elden Ring right now? After all, it's not like Sekiro wasn't a well-received game, and it never did get its purported DLC as some claimed it would.

There's something to be said about a game developer's clarity of vision about their game. Does Elden Ring have unfinished and/or evidently cut content ready for future DLC content? Yeah, absolutely. Will most players feel like they don't have enough content in the main game by default? That is exceedingly unlikely.

At this time, then, we can't offer much in the way of hard, concrete information. We will, however, continue exploring and keep you updated. And, for now, we can point you in the direction of mods. Indeed, Elden Ring already has a big and burgeoning modding community, and the game is only likely to get more community support and fan-made content over time, leaving us eagerly awaiting the prospect of more content!
