What is Black Myth: Wukong All About?

Black Myth: Wukong is quite unlike most other games on the market. An action-adventure title from the looks of it, Wukong's topic is what makes it particularly interesting, as it takes most of its cues from none other than Chinese myth.

It's not awfully often that we get a high-profile retelling of classic Asian mythology in the gaming industry. This alone helps Black Myth: Wukong stand out compared to most other genre entries it's competing with. However, there's more to it than just that, as the main title of the game, 'Black Myth' is of significant importance as well. Here's what we know so far!

The story of Black Myth: Wukong explained

As many of you will already know, Black Myth: Wukong is a modernized retelling of the Journey to the West story from classic Chinese literature. Chinese mythology, then, is used as a basis for a story that delivers its own unique twists and turns.

For example, the developer Game Science intends to explore way more than just the story of the main character, Sun Wukong, but also his many adversaries. Expect a far more layered and interesting story than you'd expect out of a straightforward Journey to the West retelling, then: something that intends to channel its basic narrative through a more interesting and complex lens.

As per Game Science's own claims: "The story of Wukong tells more than Wukong himself. The monkey is the leading role for sure, but he still is a small part of the whole vivid world. There are plenty of intriguing characters and thought-provoking dialogues in Journey to the West, not to mention the darkness veiled. We applaud when Wukong defeats these so called 'villains,' but who are they indeed?"

The fact that the game is called 'Black Myth' also suggests that there's going to be something different about this particular version of Journey to the West. Notably, there may or may not be several different versions of Sun Wukong present here, and the player-controlled character is not the most glorious of them all.
