Demon Souls PC release: To be or not to be? That is the question for PC fans!
Dang, there's a lot of stuff to unpack in the video gaming industry from the last few weeks, isn't there? We'll get to things on a case-by-case basis, but what we'll be dealing with today is Sony's claim that Demon's Souls Remake is not coming to PC, even though their initial showcase of the incredible remake suggested otherwise. Well, okay, 'suggested' is a weak modifier; the trailer straight-up said we're getting Demon's Souls Remake PC. But, here we are.
It should be obvious to everyone that we're big on PC gaming here at 2Game. After all, that is what we do. Naturally, it's in our best interest for as many games to come out on our platform of choice as possible. In fact, if you've been with us for a while now, you may recall our Bloodborne Remastered PC analysis. We still stand behind that, and behind the newer Elden Ring article, too. There's been a bunch of data suggesting PC release of the remake of the original game already. Are we convinced by Sony's claims that Demon's Souls is not coming to PC? No, we are not, and we're about to explain why!
Yeah, that's right: the fabled Bluepoint Games Demon's Souls Remake is not coming to PC after all. Or, at least, that's what PlayStation Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment inc want us to believe. There's a whole lot of context we need to unpack to get to the gist of these statements, however. Bear with us, but we're reasonably sure they should not be taken at face value.
For those who have somehow managed to avoid any news about the next-gen consoles: they are coming. By mid-November, both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will have been released, and this complicates things a whole lot, as far as game releases go. Up until just a few days back, it seemed like Sony had the upper hand. Lo and behold, then, Microsoft's announcement that they are buying Zenimax, Bethesda, and all their IPs in one fell swoop. Unimaginable!
What's not unimaginable, though, is that Sony had some insider info that this deal was going to happen. If they did, whether through leaks or hunches or concrete info, it's obvious that they would keep their cards close to their chest. From Sony's perspective, multi-platform releases aren't that big of a deal. Sure, Horizon: Zero Dawn did launch on PC not too long ago, and sure, Sony did say that more PC releases of former exclusives will follow. Would they admit that more of their first-party titles were coming out on PC anytime soon, though? We think not.
Quite the opposite! It is in Sony's best interest for people to believe that PlayStation 5 will be loaded with exclusives at launch. To an extent, this will definitely be the case, but the list is not what you'd call 'long':
Take the Demon's Souls Remake off that list, and you're losing a whole lot of potential early adopters for PlayStation 5. Don't get us wrong: we're not saying Sony is doing anything wrong. If anything, it's good business. Would we be surprised to hear that the PC badge on that Demon's Souls Remake trailer was just an early tease, though? Hardly.
Honestly? Between the "human error mistake" with the trailer and the datamines, and with Sony's apparent dedication to more PC releases of former PS exclusives? We reckon that if you are a PC gamer, you should feel hopeful. Indeed, for us, the odds of a Demon's Souls remake on PC are pretty good in the long term.
Having said that, we have no doubt that Demon's Souls Remake will be a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive no matter what. Even if Sony does intend to release the game on PC eventually, there's no telling how long of a time-window between its console and PC we might be looking at. 6 months? A year? Two years? We're at the cusp of a new console generation, and whether we like that or not, this will greatly affect PC release schedules, too.
In fact, we'd even go so far as to say that Sony's release plans for Demon's Souls Remake PC may well have changed in light of Microsoft acquiring Zenimax. That's a whole branch of the video gaming industry right there. Off the top of our proverbial heads, here are the IPs that are being affected by this acquisition:
Not to mention how many other relevant intellectual properties might come into play in the coming months and years. Make no mistake: this decision will ripple through the whole generation and likely further. Sony Interactive Entertainment will (and should) any tool they've got at hand to deal with this sale, and it won't surprise us in the slightest if this means doubling-down on exclusivity in the long run.
Something to keep in mind, though, as per PC Gamer's analysis: "When asked if Demon's Souls would ever release on PC, Sony declined to elaborate further." Most curious, isn't it? At the very least, they're leaving the possibility of an eventual Demon's Souls Remake PC launch on the table, and honestly, that's more than we'd have expected from them in the first place.
Back to the topic of Demon's Souls Remake PC, though. What do you think its system requirements would be? Looking back at our initial predictions for the PC version of Bloodborne, those seem very tame in hindsight. While we don't believe the game will make use of raytracing hardware, it does look hands-down incredible compared to everything developed by From Software.
That's how it goes with new console generations though! Demon's Souls Remastered looks awesome, and if it ever does come out on PC, don't expect it to run on Pentium III and whatnot.
We would be very surprised if something along the lines of GTX 1060 didn't become the new minimum requirement. After all, the new consoles will be significantly more powerful than that, and though you could make do with Nvidia's long-lasting mid-ranger, you should definitely be getting ready for an upgrade within the next year or so.
As we've hopefully explained in the lines you've just read, the situation is rather complex. There are a lot of moving parts to consider, and though the existence of an actual Demon's Souls Remake lends credence to the hypothetical Bloodborne Remaster, we're still not 100% sure if that's right. Further still, even if it is right, that doesn't necessarily mean the Bloodborne Remaster would ever launch on PC.
However, the leaks have been pretty darn correct so far. After all, Bluepoint Games is, indeed, developing the new Demon's Souls game, and there's not that big of a leap in logic to say that much of this work is being applied to Bloodborne, too.
We've very hopeful. More so than we were just a few weeks back, in fact. Will this ever amount to actual, palpable PC releases of Bloodborne and Demon's Souls, we do not know. But, things are moving along, and that's more than could be said before Sony's announcements. We suppose only time will tell.
Once the official confirmation drops, however, stay tuned to 2Game, because we'll be all over them.
