For this reason or the other, you're looking for games for weak PC configs. We don't judge: yours truly had been stuck with an Nvidia GT820M for literal years while still playing a number of games. This included both low and high-end titles, surprising as it might sound! Having said that, this article is dedicated to games that will work on 90% of low-spec PCs. In most cases, you won't even have to fiddle with their graphics options, even!
Some games for weak PCs on show here are old, some are now. All of them, however, will provide you with plenty of fun even if your rig is definitely not up to par. Graphics aren't everything they're made out to be, we feel. Having said that, feel free to pick a game off this list even if you do have a strong gaming PC. They're good games, Brent.
Anyhow, at the moment, we've prepared a selection of 15 games for low-spec laptops and/or PCs that are worthy of your attention. We'll keep updating this list with new picks, however, so check in every once in a while.
Currently nested in its Early Access phase, Iratus: Lord of the Dead has taken lots of inspiration from Darkest Dungeon. Except, in Iratus, you are the bad guy. This 2D turn-based strategy will work on a week-old apple pie if need be, so you're good to go if your PC isn't older than 20 years.
Though some would describe Diablo 3 and Path of Exile as "low-end", we wouldn't. These games do not perform well on truly low-end PCs, but if you want an isometric ARPG that does, check out Titan Quest! This classic ARPG is nothing short of incredible, and with two relatively recent expansion packs, you'll have an up-to-date gameplay experience that runs on a typewriter.
In case you're not aware, the original developers of Titan Quest eventually moved into producing the incredible Grim Dawn. Indeed - that's the sort of gameplay you're getting here.
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was and always will be the absolute pinnacle of classic stealth gameplay. We're huge fans of the genre, and while we could hardly recommend something like the comparatively high-end Dishonored 2, we could definitely tell you that Chaos Theory is practically a must-play. Especially in 2020, since the game is a true classic at this point. Step into Sam Fisher's stealthy boots yet once more, with the franchise at its best and most playable.
This one definitely won't be to everyone's taste, but when we tell you that Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is an insanely good game, we mean it. Sure, there's been a newer Call of Cthulhu game recently, but it's nowhere close to being one of the games for weak PC configs, honestly.
Dark Corners of the Earth, on the other hand, runs on anything and everything, and it's a really atmospheric first-person horror game unlike anything else. We recommend it, flawed as it is!
Here's the thing: Dark Souls II may be the "worst" of the three Dark Souls games on PC, but it runs damn near perfectly on even truly low-spec PCs. It's still an amazing action RPG, too! Having played this incredible game on the aforementioned 820M laptop from start 'till the end, and with the game still running perfectly well on medium settings, we feel Scholar of the First Sin earned its rightful place on this list.
This game is far better optimized than the first game, while still being more friendly to weak hardware than its two successors. It's a must-play, really, and it runs on virtually anything. On a personal note, and at the risk of angering Dark Souls fans, this is still my favorite game in the series. Make of that what you will!
One of the game series that helped Bioware claim their current fame, the KOTOR titles are both downright amazing and playable on ancient PCs. Grab them for your grandma's laptop from '98 while you're at it, too!
Oh, you knew this was coming. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will run on absolutely, positively anything. Having been ported to iOS, Android, and your garden-variety smart fridge, San Andreas may well be the most widely played triple-A video game ever made. That's quite an achievement right there, and it's not accidental.
If you belong in the younger generation of gamers that's grown up on GTA V, give this one a shot. Who knows, you might find San Andreas' charm as endearing as we did back in 1876, when it was originally released.
We'll be honest here and admit that we very nearly included Oblivion instead of Morrowind. Just for posterity, we tried installing the bugger on a pretty decent contemporary gaming rig, and then it ran awfully. For as incredible as Elder Scrolls IV is, it's not a well-optimized game at all. Luckily, Morrowind is, and it's going to provide you with one of the best role-playing gameplay experiences you've ever had.
Word of warning, though: the game is old and its gameplay is outdated. Thankfully, mods exist!
The Civilization franchise has many a time been aptly described with the 'one more turn' mantra. Few other titles are quite as inviting and infectious as Firaxis' strategy games, honestly. Civilization games, in particular, are a niche in and of themselves! Though the fifth iteration of the franchise is arguably low end, too, it seemed to us that Civilization IV was a perfect fit here. It's deep, fun, and truly is one of the games for weak PC configs.
If you opt for this game, don't forget about its many awesome expansion packs! They'll add so much good stuff you'll hardly believe it.
XCOM 2 might be a pretty resource-intensive game, but the opposite is true for XCOM: Enemy Unknown, its direct predecessor. Another Firaxis must-play, this turn-based guerilla strategy game is fun. Actually, scrap that, it's more than fun! It'll keep you busy for dozens of hours on end, and then, when you finally think you have the situation under control, up comes Enemy Within, and flips the table on you. Get it. Play it. Even on that ancient Pentium rig that struggles with Word.
Don't let that 'HD' tag frighten you. HOMM III HD is anything but taxing on your low-spec laptop. The classic turn-based strategy game received a bit of a revamp not too long ago, and it now runs perfectly well even on up-to-date machines. Most importantly, though, the game is extremely light, and you'll have no issue playing it on whatever, whenever.
Sometimes, Ubisoft throws us a curveball like no other. Yes, we are talking about the high-profile AAA publisher of, oh, Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, and a wealth of other incredibly important franchises. They guys have got some serious pull, but they're unafraid of experimentation.
The first of two lightweight Ubisoft titles we're offering here is Child of Light, a beautiful and heartfelt sidescrolling action strategy that you really need to experience for yourself.
Running on the same engine as Child of Light, Rayman Legends is, in fact, its wackier, more ridiculously insane cousin! Of course, the character of Rayman is a staple of gaming history, but we're more than happy to confirm that the lil' dude is back with a vengeance in a modernized, albeit lightweight platformer. Get it!
Believe it or not, but Mount & Blade: Warband is actually a surprisingly scalable game. Sure, you can crank everything up to eleven and pretend you're playing a slideshow, but settings at medium will ensure that even a very low-end rig will run the game just fine. It's also a true modern classic, and endlessly amusing. What's not to like?
Having mentioned this lovely little thing a few times before, Cat Quest II remains one of our favorite games in general. Not only is it fun, kid-friendly, and funny, but it's also very well-optimized.
Run it on your microwave! We bet some of you could, if you really wanted to. In any case, Cat Quest II will easily play on your aging/mismatched rig, and you won't need to feel left out if you can't upgrade right away.
Of course, the games referenced above are set up in no particular order, since we'll be updating this list as we go. Perhaps you'd like to bookmark this page to check in every once in a while? In any case, we hope our list of games for weak PC configs has provided you with a few ideas on what to go for. Happy gaming!
