Originally released way back, in 2010, Heavy Rain was a PlayStation 3 exclusive that set the bar in several areas of narrative disclosure: ones that haven't been easily outdone. Quantic Dream, the developers, have since produced several other console exclusives in the same niche, and they're all coming to PC over the coming months. With Heavy Rain being the first, some potential buyers might be confused as to what this game actually is.
Heavy Rain has been penned by the legendary game developer David Cage, who came up with a 2,000-page script for the game. Since this is primarily a narratively-driven title, it's really hard to understate the importance of avoiding spoilers, so we'll do our best to skip them entirely. Due to this, it's somewhat difficult to describe what sort of experience Heavy Rain delivers, and whether it's worth your time.
Featuring three separate protagonists, Heavy Rain is a narrative adventure game in the vein of some of the more open Telltale titles. Due to its heavy focus on delivering an interesting and gripping story that keeps twisting and turning in and of itself until the very end, it's obvious that players should ideally start playing Heavy Rain without spoiling much of anything for themselves. Thing is, this isn't all that feasible in this particular situation, with the game being almost a decade old and all that.
Since the PC release of Quantic Dream games is a relatively fresh development, there's a number of PC-bound players who might've already read about Heavy Rain's story or twists, or even watched a full playthrough on YouTube. Since Heavy Rain is light on gameplay and heavy on its delivery of narrative, the matter of watching vs playing an "old" game such as this is fairly relevant in this case. Is there a point to investing in Quantic Dream titles, then, what with their excessively staggered release?
While a more cynical player might suggest otherwise, there's nothing quite like getting through a gripping narrative on your own, for yourself - even when the outcome might be already spoiled for you. Even better, while technically linear, Heavy Rain offers plenty of opportunities for player agency. It is, after all, a game where choices matter a great deal, and a story that you shaped yourself, according to your own tastes and preferences, is vastly superior to the one you have had no input in.
The obvious conclusion, then, is that you definitely should invest in Quantic Dream games now that they're finally - and unexpectedly - coming out on PC. If for no other reason, then because it encourages developers to broaden their developmental horizons and avoid potential exclusives in the future, which is a winning situation across the board.
Whether Heavy Rain is a game for you, in particular, will depend on whether you're into games where the narrative is king. Most easily compared to various successful Telltale adventure games, Quantic Dream releases carved out a very specific niche that's not to everyone's taste, but to describe them as anything short of phenomenal would be phoning it in.
