Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is - no joke - a serious contender for the 2Game GOTY title thanks to just how incredibly well put-together it is. This is the best Indy's ever been in a video game, honestly, and that's in no small part due to the quality of the world design and levels.

The Great Circle is, you see, a kind of a semi-open sandbox game. It really should be treated in much the same way as you do a Hitman game, except here the developer MachineGames went above and beyond. Every single region of the world Indy visits in this game is immaculately designed and a real delight to explore. Down below, we've explained what makes it a kind of an open-world experience, and what makes it different from your regular run-of-the-mill sandbox title.

Is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Open-World?

In the strictest terms possible, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a level-based game. The thing that makes it special, though, is that almost all the levels are mini-sandboxes in their own right, where you can spend half-a-dozen hours completing side-quests and collecting goodies just like that.

Make no mistake here, The Great Circle is most definitely not a short game. It is a structured one, however, and it comes with several distinctive regions that each deliver their own story beats, gameplay activities, and opportunities for progression.

What this means, in practice, is that even though you cannot freely travel from, say, Shanghai to the Vatican without loading zones, you can still revisit previous areas to 100% complete them. If you choose to do so, naturally. Further, these areas stay populated with enemies and NPCs, so there's always something new to have fun with.

Can you Fast-Travel in Indiana Jones?

Good news is you find Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's maps to be too large: you can fast-travel across them! Be on the lookout for direction signs that are strewn throughout each level: holding the 'USE' key with a specific sign highlighted will teleport you over to the particular part of the map you're trying to visit. This not only makes more complicated objectives easier to complete, but also makes it less cumbersome to hunt for goodies and collectibles!

The thing to note here is that you cannot fast-travel from one region of the world to another. Instead, if you're trying to revisit previous maps, use the 'Travel' tab in Indy's Journal. Going back to a region you've already completed will not be reflected in the main story, however. Instead, the game treats this optional return to prior regions as if you've never progressed past the chapter's respective final sequence.

So, it's kind of like going back to a point before the point of no return in a regular open-world game. Except, here you've got a bunch of these checkpoints strewn throughout, allowing you to re-progress previously completed sections of the game. Of course, whatever goodies you collect or side-quests you complete will remain completed after you go back to the main narrative!
