Ubisoft Entertainment has done it again. It's comprehensive Anno 1800 Complete Edition is certainly impressive. Especially considering that, whereas action game fans have been eating really, really well as of late - especially now that Hogwarts Legacy's come out - it does seem like strategy game fans have only had a few viable high-profile titles to choose from over the past couple of years.
True enough, the release of Company of Heroes 3 possibly signals a new era of RTS gaming, but Anno 1800 sits in a different category, being a historical city-building title. And, really, as rare as quality city-builders are, it's not necessarily strange that quality titles end up sticking around for a good long while. Just look at Cities: Skylines, whose sequel we were sure we'd have already heard of by now... back in 2020!
Back on topic, though, Anno 1800 is now entering its fourth year of content. This means that, on top of the base game, , there's a veritable wealth of extra content for the prospective buyer to consider. But, should you? Or is the base version just enough? Is 2023's content going to be any good? Let's talk!
The matter of 'value' is a hotly contested topic in the video game industry. In some instances, the buyer may be thrilled having spent $60 for a 10-hour experience, if it's just the sort of rollercoaster they love. In other cases, though, even $20 may feel like it's too much for a particularly critical gamer. It's all personal preference, to be sure, but it is possible to discuss gaming 'value' using hard uncontestable facts. It just so happens, too, that Anno 1800 is absolutely jam-packed with stuff in 2023, and much of it is very easily quantifiable!
So, if you're interested in learning just how much there is to do in Anno 1800 now that the Year 4 Complete Edition of the game is out - you've come to just the right place. This version of the game is pricy, after all, and it's only sensible if you'd like to know what you're getting yourself into. The good news, though, is that it's all good news!
To begin with, it's important to explain just how much work's been done on Anno 1800 since its 2019 launch date. In true Ubisoft fashion, the game has received an eye-watering amount of post-launch support. Whether this is due to its sheer quality or due to its unique appeal, we don't know. The important bit, however, is that Anno 1800 could easily keep you busy for hundreds of hours on end on launch day including classics like New World Rising and Tourist Season. Now, though? Sheesh.
Every Anno 1800 Year 4 Complete Edition copy comes with the following content included by default:
Now, some may be disappointed to hear that Anno 1800 has essentially wrapped up its mainline development cycle. In other words, there will be no Season Pass 5 after all. That being said... we'd be hard-pressed to imagine anybody could complain over the sheer breadth and variety of content present here after years of post-production. From the gritty industria of Docklands all the way to the joy of discovering new Sunken Treasures, there's much to love here.
It may be worth pointing out that those who just aren't interested in playing all of the old content - though you really ought to - can save a few bucks and purchase Anno 1800 Year 4 Gold Edition. This version of the game foregoes all three previous Season Pass offerings and instead comes bundled with just a license for 2022's seminal releases: Seeds of Change, Empire of the Skies, and New World Rising.
In 2023, Anno 1800 is a wildly different and more comprehensive game than the base game was four years ago: "When we created our DLC plans all those years ago, we did not expect to still work on our “baby” in 2022," said the official blog post. Indeed, Anno 1800 Complete Edition has essentially twice the content that the base game had back in 2019, with years upon years of build-up with more features, gameplay systems, and content all interacting with one another, We would go as far as saying that, with the Complete Edition, Ubisoft has created what may well be the finest historical city-builder we have ever seen. And that's no mean feat.
It's important to state that the base game can provide ample playtime and enjoyment all on its own. For those who've had absolutely no experience playing Anno 1800, that's precisely where we'd recommend they start. For the more experienced, veteran strategy gamers, though? Complete Edition in its Year 4 variant with content such as New World Rising, The Land of Lions, and Tourist Season could well keep you busy throughout 2023!
With Ubisoft announcing that it is wrapping things up back in 2022, players can still look forward to a few additional cosmetic packs in the future, as well as an additional set of goodies as part of the franchise's 25th anniversary, but it's practically a given that the devs have moved on to a new project by now.
In its current - and final - state, Anno 1800 is one of the most content-rich games on the market, easily. And pricy though the Complete Edition may be, with season passes including content such as Tourist Season, Empire of the Skies, and Seat of Power, we're positively convinced of its value! And hey, if you'd like to save a few bucks, don't forget that 2Game has a sale running around the clock, with deals rotating in and out of availability as we go. In other words, just stick around and a new discount is bound to drop in soon enough.
"While we do not have anything concrete to announce at this point, given the popularity of Anno 1800 it should not be a surprise that we are working on the future of Anno," said the developers, underlining what all their fans must've seen coming all along. Naturally, there's no telling if the next mainline Anno game will get the same sort of long-term support as Anno 1800 has enjoyed throughout its lifetime. Really, while Anno games have always been well-regarded, this is the title that truly underlined the IP's importance in the strategy gaming niche.
