Choosing Monster Hunter: World weapon is no easy task. Especially when all of the choices are so awesome. So I'm here to make your choice a whole lot easier. That is, by comparing the Monster Hunter: World weapons to Dark Souls playstyles. Now that's something you didn't expect to read today, isn't it?

Drawing the parallel between the two games

Dark Souls vs Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter: World and Dark Souls are two very different yet similar games. They both use the same general type of combat, but each in their own way. Naturally, some aspects of it are more similar between them than others. Primarily the difference a weapon choice makes in both games.

And that is the similarity I'd like to focus on today. I'm going to make an overview of some very popular builds and playstyles from each Dark Souls game and try to find the best fitting Monster Hunter: World weapon for it. And if possible, some additional skills that come from gems and armour.

Choosing Monster Hunter: World weapon based on the greatest Dark Souls weapon

Choosing Monster Hunter World weapon greatsword

Disclaimer: I might be slightly biased here. Although, this truly is the greatest weapon ever invented in the whole Dark Souls franchise. And better yet, it is very easy to find its equivalent amongst Monster Hunter: World weapon selection. Of course, I'm talking about the one and only Zweihander! And as a bonus, I'll give you this guide on the best possible way to pronounce it if you want to give an aneurism to a native German speaker.

For the uninitiated, the Zweihander is the best weapon in the game. Period. But in all seriousness, it is game breaking early on. You'll probably be one-hitting or two-hitting most of the stuff you come across. Just as long as you can deal with taking forever to swing that massive hunk of steel.

So where does the choosing Monster Hunter: World weapon come in with all that? Simple. It's the greatsword. Shocking, isn't it? Just like in Dark Souls, the greatsword is capable of delivering massive amounts of damage in a single hit. It does take a little bit longer to wind up than other weapons, or all of them, but you can't argue with the results. If you prefer to wait for an opening and then deliver a massive strike, the Zweihander and the greatsword are perfect for you.

The best way to play Dark Souls is also the best way to play Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter World lance build Dark Souls

You know the build I'm talking about, right? Start as a knight, get your hands on the best shield possible, and pump that strength up. You'll be a walking fortress. Block stabs, slashes, crushes, and explosions alike. And while the enemy is freaking out about how you just manage to do that, you go in for the kill.

There are plenty of Dark Souls build like that, ranging from super-heavy Havel to a more agile (but still tanky) Black Knight builds. And right about now, I bet you're wondering how that playstyle transfers to Monster Hunter: World.

Well, in order to do that, you pick up the lance. Why? Because it makes you an unbreakable wall of pure awesomeness. No attack goes through your defences. Especially when you spice it up with a few Ironwall jewels. Dual blades will want you, sword and shields will want to be you. And every single group out there will fight tooth and nail to have you on their side.

The right decision when choosing Monster Hunter: World weapon

Monster Hunter World longsword

Much like in the world of Dark Souls (and every anime ever), anything can be solved by a masterful application of a katana. The true hero of every dexterity-based build. Dodge and roll out of harm's way, and before your enemies know it you're already behind them. And they're already dead.

But enough of the bad jokes based on memes. The real reason why you should choose the longsword in Monster Hunter: World is because it has a little bit of everything. Just like the dexterity builds of Dark Souls.

First, you have an amazing reach. The monster can't get you if you're always 10 feet out of their reach, can they? Not to mention that the longsword gives you access to wide-sweeping attacks. They're perfect for clearing out mobs of smaller monsters that might get in your way during the hunt. Then comes the real kicker: massive mobility. Longsword combos can be interrupted at any time and turned into a dodge instead. No need to commit yourself to an hour-long attack that can't be interrupted. Looking at you, dual blades. And last, but certainly not least, is the fact that Monster Hunter: World longswords have the best elemental bonuses of every weapon type. If you want to play on exploiting the monster's weakness, choosing the longsword is the right way to go.

A choice that bears heavy consequences

Monster Hunter World Drumstick Hammer

Do you remember the first time you got your ass kicked by Ornstein and Smough? Yeah, me too. Everyone does. But do you also remember how awesome it felt to find Smough's Great Hammer and beating everything to a pulp with it? Oh yes, that was an amazing day indeed.

With Monster Hunter's hammer weapons, every day is like that. It is the only weapon that manages to capture the magic of smacking your foe around until they get dizzy and faint. But the best thing? You don't have to worry about your weapon getting dull... as much. Don't ask me how, but apparently hammers tend to get dull with use.

Regardless, for those of you with exquisite taste who prefer the finer things in life, such as smashing monsters, a hammer is the perfect choice. Not only will you be the star of the show by doing awesome air flips (yes, that's a thing), but will also prove invaluable to any hunting party with the sheer amount of crowd control you bring to the table

So these are just a few of recommendations on choosing Monster Hunter: World weapons based on your Dark Souls playstyle. Hopefully, you found your weapon of choice. And if not, go ahead and try them all out yourself. As a reminder you can get both Monster Hunter: World and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne for a discounted price here at 2game. I'll see you next time, and happy hunting!
