LEGO PC games are a mainstay in many gamers' libraries, and for good reason. They're pretty darn awesome! This effort has been mostly spearheaded by TT Games and their unique niche. As you may or may not know, TT Games made a name for itself by producing LEGO adaptations of some of the most popular intellectual properties on the market. From Avengers themselves to Harry Potter and LOTR, TT Games know what they're about.
In fact, their upcoming release, The Skywalker Saga, is one of the games we're most eagerly anticipating. It did get pushed back recently, but that doesn't derail our hype train - no sir.
Setting aside all the awesome existing LEGO PC games, though, today we'd like to take a look at some titles that don't exist. But should, possibly. Today, we'll present you with four gameplay loops that we think would be phenomenal for a modern LEGO game. From shooters to puzzlers, we think there's a little something for everyone on this list.
Now, it may be worth pointing out that we won't really be talking about existing mobile LEGO titles in this article. Since we're firmly in the context of home gaming, we'll stick to what we know. Of course, if you'd like to check out existing LEGO mobile phone projects that do fit into some of the genres we'll discuss here, give them a whirl!

We know, we know - LEGO racing games are hardly an endangered species. From the ancient Lego Racers title from 1999 all the way to the most recent Forza Horizon 4 expansion pack, there's a lot to choose from far as LEGO racing games are concerned. Wouldn't it be nice, though, if we could get something along the lines of FlatOut or even Blur?
Quite simply, it's been a really long time since we last get a proper, fully-fledged LEGO racer on PC or home consoles. The IP has, for the most part, been relegated to simpler mobile games that can't parry the depth of gameplay we usually enjoy.
Even if it would be a more technically-inclined game such as Main Assembly, LEGO's vast library of IPs, vehicle models, and - naturally - customization options lend all themselves perfectly to the concept. It's a match made in heaven, we think.
Yeah, maybe not that kind of puzzler. We were thinking something more along the lines of The Room. Not the Tommy Wiseau movie, no, but the series of rather phenomenal brain-bending puzzlers for mobile phones.
Alternatively, an option for a puzzle game may have been hiding in TT Games' titles all along. If you've ever played one of the developer's offerings, you'll know that different characters have different abilities. One of these is the ability to take random strewn-apart piles of LEGOs and put together various useful gadgets for continued progression. We've always felt like this was a bit of a wasted gameplay opportunity, simply because the process is fully automatic.
Players merely need to break down some random detritus and then hold the action key to rebuild it as a useful item. If someone were to lean more heavily on this, though, players could be tasked with using LEGOs to build items and gadgets themselves, manually. Or, perhaps, to complete various machinery that otherwise wouldn't work.
Truthfully, puzzle games are sadly underrepresented on major platforms, and if there's an existing IP that could revitalize the genre, it would probably be LEGO.
It confuses us to no end that there's no proper LEGO city-building game on PC. With the continued (and remarkable) success of games such as Cities: Skylines, you'd think that someone with access to the LEGO IP would get the right idea. But no.
We don't know about you, but some of our best LEGO-related memories were those of our attempts to assemble massive, sprawling towns and cities made of LEGOs. Much as the one pictured above, courtesy of Alex Nunes. Since the whole point of LEGOs is that people can use them to build whatever, it should be plainly obvious that their whole schtick could be used for a phenomenally varied and interesting city-building game.
We'll concede, though, that the genre is probably not popular enough for something like this. Historically, LEGO has leaned more heavily into the casual gaming industry, and a fully-fledged city-building game is probably a bit too hardcore for that sort of thing. Still, one can hope!
Looter-shooters are a reasonably popular genre nowadays, and that's for good reason. They're inherently incredibly satisfying because we're all really just a bunch of magpies in disguise. We love collecting cool and shiny things, and looter-shooters appeal to this section of our lizardly brains perfectly.
Our main argument for why a LEGO looter-shooter ought to exist isn't a LEGO game at all. Instead, we look towards Minecraft Dungeons and its considerable success in the casual hack 'n' slash market. Now, sure, Dungeons didn't exactly take the world by storm. Our argument, though, is that it wasn't even supposed to. Instead, it's probably the best ARPG you could possibly wish for, if you're looking to introduce it to your younglings. Or if you're just looking for something neat, nice, and decently long that won't suck hundreds of hours of your time away.
Our hypothetical LEGO looter-shooter would inhabit a similar niche. An action title focused on loot, but without blood, gore, or anti-PG humor. If there's an IP that could pull something like this off, it's definitely LEGO.
The million-dollar question that got us thinking about this topic in the first place; the answer, of course, is probably yes. That said, it's one thing to talk about what would be great in theory, and another altogether to actually pull one of these ideas off properly. We're more than happy enough with the stuff produced by TT Games, and we're well-aware of some other projects that failed to reach the levels they were initially destined for.
So, we won't really be holding our proverbial breath for any of the ideas listed here. For all intents and purposes, they're merely the kind of wacky what-if scenarios we all love to think about from time to time. But! Who knows what the future might hold. We've no doubt that we'll see more done with LEGO over the next couple of years. All that remains to be seen is what, exactly, might that turn out to be.
