Let's be honest for a bit: Persona games are a great fit on home consoles and PCs, but they're absolutely perfect for handhelds, specifically. Between awesome stories, characters, exploration opportunities, and a turn-based combat system, there's nothing to complain about, and obviously, we wanted to give Metaphor: ReFantazio on the Deck!
Now, Metaphor is no Persona, but the game is made by the same developer and follows many of the same gameplay tropes, to boot. It is unexpected heavy, however, and that's where your concerns may play into the picture. Notably, is Metaphor good for the Steam Deck, or should you stick to your home gaming device instead?
As usual when attempting to run AAA games on the Steam Deck, Metaphor: Refantazio is a bit of a mixed bag if you don't spend a few minutes tweaking thingsĀ just right. This may be a bit of a pain if you're flying by the seat of your pants, but we've done the hard work in your stead. Here's the lowdown!
The bad news is that you're generally not going to get more than 30 FPS in Metaphor. The good news, though, is that those 30 FPS will be basically rock-solid throughout, and you'll get decent battery life to boot. With a 30 FPS cap, the only real downside to Metaphor: Refantazio on the Deck is that you're going to have minor black bars due to the game not supporting the 16:10 aspect ratio.
Further, Metaphor doesn't really have all that many graphics settings for you to tweak. By far the most important one is the rendering scale slider, and that one you can tweak until you're happy with it. If you really want to try for a reasonable 40 FPS cap, we suggest going for about 80% of the baseline render. Still, do expect for frames to drop in cities in particular, as well as a higher battery draw.
Our suggestion really is to stick with a full 100% rendering scale and play at a rock-solid 30 FPS for 95% of the game. It's a great experience, and performance isn't a huge consideration here in the first place due to the combat playing out in turns. Instead, we'd advise you to go for a stable and cinematic (ha!) experience, and you'll be able to play for way longer, to boot.
One thing to note is that we had to keep our TDP capsĀ off for the game to work well. Texture settings didn't amount to much, and neither did Ambient Occlusion, so keep those at whatever level you feel comfortable with!
